Guest guest
Sandy and all parents in this forum, I was on 300 of wellbutrin along with 150 of zoloft. I started on 150 wellbutrin a year ago and discovered anxiety was still an issue. Zoloft is an antidepressant, but from my understanding, it does have anti anxiety properties. I know it sounds like a lot, but I do not feel drugged up and it beats living in dread and worry. I personally was born with a family history of chemical imbalance, so it is chronic in my case. Our bodies are very sensitive to the effects of stress, so if you are dealing with excessive stress, the chemical balance can easily be shifted as a response mechanism. I am very open with my " imbalance " and find that sooooo many people are having difficulty dealing with the stress of society and responsibility in this modern world, which is comforting to say the least. I used to be ashamed of my inadequacy for dealing. I have always been a proponent of alternative meds and believe that docs do overmedicate, but I also believe that the stress of modern society can catch up with anybody, and if meds help, then go for it! I cannot believe how many people I know that have been on some sort of mood stabilizing script at one time or another. Once I got over my feeling of guilt by relying on meds to help me through life, the meds were actually more effective. Funny thing about all of this is that my daughter's friend's mother called me yesterday to ask me how Colleen was doing in school with her anxiety. I briefed her, as I knew there had to be more reason for her call, then she proceeded to tell me some of the behaviors her daughter was displaying- very similar to Colleen- which were causing her distress. In considering her phone call and how many children are placed on ADHD meds nowadays, I developed a theory. Pregnant women are under too much stress (work, family, household, finances, divorce, etc) resulting in chemical imbalance throughout pregnancy. If meds taken during pregnancy are not safe for a developing fetus, how can a chemical imbalance be any different? I also am convinced that children are faced with so much more responsibility at such young ages, that simply is not natural or healthy (daycare, go families, working moms, higher demands of school in huge classes, etc), that their little bodies are faced with more stress than it is capable of dealing with. I have to laugh because the thought of a young child having too much stress is utterly ridiculous, but it is a fact of today. Children are also very impressionable, as well as very dependent on mommy, so how can our imbalances and difficulty dealing with stresses we face not have a radical impact on them. Kids have a phenomenal sixth sense, so to speak. So, all in all, the fact that there are so many children facing challenges of OCD and ADD, etc, is the basis for my theory that this modern world's requirements of individuals, beginning at a very young age, is creating widespread chemical imbalance, including that of our children. I think we need to slow down as a whole and it needs to be a widespread movement. Unfortunately, I do not think this is going to happen, so we medicate to survive. I apologize for the lecture, but when I get on a role, I just cannot stop! In my pursuance of a secondary certification, I intend on using it to touch the lives of my students and set them up for emotional success in addition to scholastic success. Any comments? Would love to hear what others think- whether agree or disagree. Maybe if we dig a bit deeper, we can come up with some solutions. Guest guest
I have been thinking alot about something like this too. My 10 yr old daughter has OCD. When I was pregnant with her, I constantly stayed stressed due to her father not being a good husband. Long story short, it was not an easy pregnancy mentally. I wonder if me staying so agitated and nervous (crying, screaming, etc.) made this start while I was pregnant with her. I was on no meds at the time. I am now on Zoloft and have been for right at 10 yrs. Was told it was ok to take while pregnant. I took it while I was preg w/my 2 yr old and now 9 mos preg and have taken it the whole time. I am curious to see if what you are saying could be true. But there is no way I could go off the medicine. I am a total basket case, yelling and stressing out. So we will see what happens. --------------------------------- for Good Click here to donate to the Hurricane Katrina relief effort.

Guest guest
Jill, Well, I agree and disagree with your post. I agree 100% about today's society giving our kids too much stress. We get used to going all the time and spreading ourselves thin, but if many of us think to back to our youth....ah, so much simpler. The extra-curricular activities are a hot-button for me; I see so many kids rushing around, doing 2, 3 different activities, plus schoolwork, and both parents working. And often the parents push the kids to do more, do it better, etc. Most of them look exhausted from not getting enough sleep. When do kids get to be kids? For my OCD child, I know she could never do all that, she can't seem to handle school and homework! We have started swimming lessons on Saturdays, but you can see that although she loves it, it takes so much out of her. OCD kids do not need added stress from the outside, they have enough on the inside! What I highly disagree with is that stress during pregnancy can cause OCD (I think that's your theory). I believe it is highly hereditary, so you " pass " it on that way, but not from your stress. I have a sister-in-law who has OCD, but she is a calm person, very patient, never raises her voice, and moves at a snail's pace, so not franatic at all. (Her OCD is about checking things, pretty mild.) Yet her daughter wound up with severe OCD. I think if you have any mental health issues, it is very likely (unfortunately) that at least one of your children will have something too, although it can manifest itself differently (as in your case, you have anxiety and depression, in your daughter it came out in the form of OCD). nna. Guest guest
I was the happiest I'd ever been in my life (and I've never suffered from depression) while I was pregnant. Guest guest
Gotta agree here. I was extremely happy to be pregnant with my OCD son. It was a good time of my life. My second pregnancy was incredibly stressful for a variety of reasons. I remember asking my mom 'can stress cause a baby to be born stressed?' In the end, my second child did have a birth defect (eye cataract) but does not have any anxiety/ocd type difficulties like my first-born. kimz what is wrong with me > > > > > > > >Thanks to all who responded. Guest guest
Hi Jill, as to your theory on pregnancy and then also about childhood these days, I disagree & agree! Let's see, I have 3 sons, 2 are twins so 2 pregancies there. All my pregnancies were stressful as to my marriage. And my first pregnancy - boy, I ran the gamut of hormonal emotions there, LOL, marriage problems aside! (in other words, could have had a perfect marriage and I'd still have been up/down emotionally) With the twins, things were more calm (or rather *I* was, marriage was failing) but then I was so " morning sickness " the entire pregnancy, etc., - well, anyway, my " hormonal " reactions 2nd time weren't there so far as the extreme highs/lows/feelings.... Do I think my emotions & stress played a part in how my kids turned out - don't know. I do think they might play a part. But I can't say that someone who goes 100% thru a pregnancy very happily, cheerfully, great marriage, etc., can't end up having *something* with their child at some age (birth or later). So genetics play a big part I believe. I see where 's OCD comes from (my mom, me). had OCD at a very young age, basically went away (yay!!) I've read where the ultrasound is being looked at, it's advised not to have too many (or are wondering about the effects of too many) as ultrasounds might affect the fetus, I'm thinking neurologically. Side note - Did you see today where Paxil has another warning to not take it during pregnancy, might cause heart condition (or something)? Just never know what all might affect a child before birth - heredity/genetics, emotions, mom's hormones(!), foods, ultrasounds.... As to childhood - YES, back to the simpler life!! Sounds great but that's because I'm getting up in age, LOL! Gotta go, just some very quick thoughts (that I can take back later, LOL!) Guest guest
HI nna, Good point! I do not disagree with you. I should have clarified that I believe it to be factual that the imbalance on a human system is hereditary- absolutely no doubt about it. So, my theory about stress of modern society- pressures faced by women mostly (be it visual to an outsider or not) having an impact on fetal development could possibly, in addition to the hereditary likeliness of a child of of a parent with an imbalance, make it more likely for the child to possess these tendencies. I am a great example of someone that does not appear whatsoever to suffer from my disorders. It is difficult for most people to believe that I have such turmoil going on in myself, including a few of the docs I have been to and my immediate family, because of my ability to mask it on the outside. I suppose that in itself is part of my disfunction!!! So, instead of using the word stress of a mother through pregnancy is not precisely the message I was trying to convey. With your response, I am able to put my theory into perspective and re-evaluate the terminology. Thanks for your insight. Being a scientist, in addition to my ADD, often makes me overthink! Guest guest
Hi Jill, I totally agree. (High School teacher in TExas) Sandy and all parents in this forum, I apologize for the lecture, but when I get on a role, I just cannot stop! In my pursuance of a secondary certification, I intend on using it to touch the lives of my students and set them up for emotional success in addition to scholastic success. Any comments? Would love to hear what others think- whether agree or disagree. Maybe if we dig a bit deeper, we can come up with some solutions. Jill in Michigan (anybody else in metro Detroit?) Guest guest
Both of my pregnancies were easy and joyful and both of my kids have OCD. The only difference between the two pregnancies was the severity of my asthma and since both girls have OCD, I don't think that contributed either.
