Guest guest
Hi, I can sympathize with everything you have said. My daughter's therapist told us that there are 4 ways people cope with this kind of stuff. One of the ways my daughter used to use with her therapist. I can't remember what she called it, but essentially it was acting like a jerk. She was being mean and not acting like she felt bad about it. She would be very sarcastic and actually made her therapist feel bad. Essentially, it all had to do with my daughter feeling really bad about herself and dealing with the out of control things going on in her head. It was how she chose to control the situation. We did add Seroquel, and I don't know how it is usually done, but she was on 200 mg of Zoloft before we added this. She also was missing a lot of school due to obsessive thinking and depression and the school was threatening to take away her credit. Did your psych give you a reason for adding the Risperdal before the Zoloft was raised? I am guessing she was having more than just 2 bad days before the psych decided to add this? I hope things improve soon. Kim In a message dated 10/5/2005 7:50:55 AM Central Standard Time, musicgirl9395@... writes: Just venting. Guest guest
Hi, I wonder if the no remorse is part of the ocd. We live in southern Ca. and have to deal with wild fires. Right now the Santa Ana winds are blowing which means if a fire starts watch out! Bre had that " look " on her face and so I asked what she was thinking. She said she was thinking how it is exciting when there is a fire and then she felt bad because people's houses can get burned down. She shows lack of compassion at times when it it something sad, like a death. Other times she is overly worried about a friends happiness! Sometimes it will seem like she feels no remorse too. I think it just gets confusing, all those thoughts floating around in their head! Bre said at times it is like watching two movies at the same time! No wonder she is mentally exhausted at the end of the day. I can't even imagine processing all of those thoughts she has! Sandy > Just venting. Guest guest
I'm sorry your daughter is having a hard time. I imagine that the doctor is recommending Risperdal because it helps with outbursts, temper, and mood and it works much more quickly than a change in the Zoloft would. I have one daughter who has taken Risperdal for several years now without any weight gain. She is twelve. My other daughter, Hannah, takes Abilify for the same reasons takes the Risperdal (mood, etc.) The Abilify, we were told, is less likely to cause the weight gain. Hannah struggles with her weight, so the doctor was reluctant to put her on something that was very likely to cause her to gain. Maybe Abilify is something to consider? Guest guest
My 11 year old daughter is on Luvox (150/day). Her dr. added a very sall amt of resperdal (only .75 mg/day), which seems to help with the " bad thoughts " , which are pretty bad. We tried to wean her off of this at one time, but found that she is better with it. She did not do well on it alone, though. > Just venting. Guest guest
I think that the anger is probably related to the OCD as we experience this too. I also wholeheartedly believe that it is often outside their control. Perhaps your daughter realizes that it is out of her control and she doesn't feel the need then to be remorseful about her actions. SHe may not realize that others think that she can control her actions all of the time. She then feels hurt about their response and it becomes a vicous cycle. I'm not experienced enough about the meds to comment, but it would seem that she needs something more. Good luck, Bonnie > Just venting. Guest guest
A lot of your daughter's " mean " attitude can be due to OCD and anxiety, which means once her symptoms are effectively treated, this behavior should dramatically lessen or disappear. I doubt your dd doesn't have compassion or remorse, but she may be self-focused on her own anxiety at this time to show it. Did she go short of sleep over her busy weekend? I have found that this really has a negative impact on my child's symptoms, even now at 11. The doctor may have prescribed Risperdal because, coupled with an SSRI, it can calm impulsivity, irritability and etc. My dd took it for a number of years without weight gain, which is a common side effect. It made her sleepy, so we gave it at night to take advantage of this side effect. Her Zoloft dose is low, and she may well need more to get on top of her anxiety and other OCD symptoms. Does the Adderall seem to increase OCD or anxiety. Sometimes the ADHD meds can do that. By all means ask the doctor to explain the low dose of Zoloft, the addition of Risperdal, and anything else you don't quite understand about his treatment plan for your child! I hope today was a better one for you and your daughter. Kathy R. in Indiana ----- Original Message ----- From: " musicgirl9395 " <musicgirl9395@...> > Just venting. It did help her OCD and focusing in school, but she was also doing some crazy dangerous stuff (similiar to your daughter). Right now she is on 10mg prozac, very low, but she cannot go any higher without impulsive behaviors. CBT is the only thing that has really helped her. She started CBT w/zoloft and the tapered off of it as her OCD got better. in MA (I think our daughters have emailed each other in the past)
Guest guest
My daughter had this type of disinhibited and impulsive behavior while titering up on an SSRI, in her case Prozac. The lack of compassion and remorse you mentioned in your earlier post can be part of this too. My dd did dangerous things and I watched her like a toddler. These behaviors did not disappear but instead escalated with every dose increase and were a main reason she was switched from Prozac. With her over the years, I just got used to " out of character " behavior whenever we were adjusting meds, tapering off or titering up. It's this sort of thing the doctor may have had in mind when he recommended the Risperdal, maybe he only meant her to take it for the short term? Having R in place before going up on the Zoloft maybe would reduce or eliminate these behaviors? Zoloft is somewhat activating in many people. Just keep an eye on her for now and realize that she's not her usual self. Report these behaviors to the doctor, but as I say lots of parents have seen this when making med changes. It's not too likely that she is starting in with another disorder coincidentally with making med changes. I wanted to mention too that her OCD may be worse for now, I know my child did do some of the things she obsessed about, again while " under the influence " of a med change. If your dd has had obsessions about harming her pet or ??, this might have fueled her putting it down the laundry chute. Guest guest
About impulsiveness, I think medications can definitely have an effect. Was she ever like this before at any time, before ever being on medication or just since?? Then again, meds or no meds, I don't put anything past teenage hormones either! I do know I've read from other parents over these past years how Risperdal or other has helped greatly with impulsive acts. I don't think OCD would play much of a part with the hamster though! > > Hi, > As always, I really appreciate the support that you all give to me. > My daughter's anxiety continued to rise, and I got a phone call from > school that she was refusing to do some work.
