Dear Siblings,

I am conducting a research project to fulfill graduate work requirements for a Masters Degree in Nursing at Valparaiso University. I am interested in the perceptions, feelings, and experiences of siblings of children or young adults who have organ transplants. Very often the brothers and sisters of the kids who have had the transplant also have special needs and concerns.

The title of this research study is “What is the Life Experience of Siblings in the family With a Child Who has an Organ Transplant?” The purpose of this study is to determine sibling perceptions and uncover themes of what it is like to grow up with a brother or sister who has an organ transplant. The transplantation process affects all members of the family including siblings. It is important for nurses to understand these sibling experiences in order to provide better care to the entire family.

Since teens and young adults like to communicate with their friends via the Internet, I will gather all of my data through the AOL instant messaging system or email. I will enclose directions on how to connect with AOL’s instant messaging system if needed. I will provide special participant screen names for purpose of this study so participants do not need to use their personal screen names. Since the screen names protect privacy, siblings should be able to express their feelings openly. All responses will be kept confidential.

The session will begin with introductory questions and we will go on from there. These questions are: 1) What was it like for you when you found out your brother or sister needed a transplant? 2) What was it like for you when your brother or sister had the transplant surgery? 3) Are or were things different in the family since your brother or sister had the transplant? If so, in what ways? I will advise you later of the date and time of AIM sessions via email. Siblings, please have your screen names ready to go by that date if you wish to use AIM.

After the sessions have concluded, siblings will delete the study screen names.

Over……

I thank you for your time. If you have any questions, please email me at kballardrn@.... I look forward to speaking with all of you very soon.

If you choose to participate, please proceed to the Acknowledgement Statement by opening the attachment that I will send to you via email. If you have contacted me via this email address, proceed by opening the rest of the attachment(s).

Sincerely yours,

Ballard RN, BSN

Take care of yourself,

Liz
