Guest guest
Hi I use dried Hibiscus as well, got it from Whole Foods Market. Results was good tea with fat SCOBYs.. Be patient your brews will produce fatter SCOBYs with time... Soon, you will have more SCOBYs than you know what to do with. I am at that stage where I have too many of them, I will start a starter pot one of these days... I hate to throw a SCOBY away and frankly they are not that tasty... Guest guest
Im a ways south of you hon, but dried hibiscus flowers are readily available in the section where the mexican herbs and spices are found. Its in a bag marked either hibiscus or Jamaica flowers. In Mexico they use the flowers to make a drink called Jamaica ( Ha-Mike-ah) Im sure you know all about that already. Ive been adding them to my second ferment for quite a few years. I don't like to add them to the original brew because those flowers get all caught up in the scoby. However adding freshly made Jamaica might not be such a bad idea One word of caution tho. Most recipes for Jamaica advise adding the flowers to boiling water. There has been considerable problems in this area with that method causing kidney stones. The doctors are advising to just add them to room temp water and treat like a sun tea. This method does not seem to be causing any problems. I doubt this would really present any problem to anyone unless they were drinking a LOT of Jamaica which my Mexican friends seem to do. zoe Thursday, May 31, 2007, 8:10:03 AM, you wrote: > I saw dried sweetened hibiscus at Trader Joe's. Guest guest
Hello Idy It says on my packet Organic hibiscus flowers 100g. So, I guess mine is natural and not sweetened. I purchased mine from www.herbsandshealing.co.uk but this is a British Website (although they will sell overseas). However, I am pretty sure that there are similar Web sites in the States and you should be able to find one by doing a search on Google. I do not know what it is about hibiscus but the SCOBIES are just massive and very healthy. You will find this out as soon as you start brewing. Another thing - the kombucha is ready much quicker and without any heating tray. Pangie -- ] After Hibiscus K Tea I saw dried sweetened hibiscus at Trader Joe's. Has anyone tried that for making kombucha? I would like to make some immediately from all the talk about yummy hibiscus KT. Where does one find regular hibiscus for making KT anyways? I live in the Bay Area California so would like to know a source. I can't wait to make blushing scobies and thick babies. Mine are kinda just average and there are always days when we have no more because we drink KT everyday, and the supply can't keep up with the demand. I wish I didn't have to ration the KT and can drink to our hearts content. I just want the problem of having too many scobies and too much KT :-) So I would be very grateful for tips on brewing faster and making bigger scobies and a source for the magical hibiscus. eagerly waiting for a reply , Idy
