Abilify and fainting?

My 16 year old son has been on lexapro 20 mg for a month, with no

results, so the Dr added abilify 10 mg. He took his 1st one today and

passed out in the bathroom (he's not sure if he fainted or had a

seizure) just knows he felt light headed and next thing he knew, he was

on the floor. Just wondering if anyone who takes abilify has had any

problems with fainting, lightheadedness or possible seizures. I plan to

take him off of it until talking to his doctor, I was really hoping

this would help him. Also, since taking lexapro (but before taking

abilify) he says his head feels strange on the left side; has anyone

ever had that type of reaction to the ssri's? thanks

The worst (and pretty much only) side effect my 13yo son had when starting

Abilify a couple of months ago was extreme tiredness, which wore off after about

a month. He did have problems with Clonidine when the new dr. tried increasing

the dose -- he's small for his age and very thin, and he started having " mini

blackouts. " The ped sent him to a cardiologist, who felt it was caused by a drop

in BP from the increased Clonidine, which was reduced as a result and the

symptoms went away. Abilify was added at that point (he takes the meds for his

Tourette's). FYI, he also takes Adderall XR with a Ritalin booster. He is not my

OCDer, that's his sister.

Of course, there was the near-passing out episode the day after he got the

meningitis shot in July. The summer program director called an ambulance for

that one -- pretty scary to get a call that your child is en route to the

hospital.

Abilify can definitely cause orthostatic hypotension, which is reduced blood

pressure when standing. My daughter suffers from this, whether naturally or

from her Abilify, we don't know. (her father had it as a teen also, so it could

be genetic). If that is what is going on with your son, he will have to be

careful not to stand up too quickly and to hang on to a chair or wall as he

stands up, at least until his body adjusts a bit to the medication. But I'm sure

the doctor will tell you all this anyway!

Best wishes,

in NV

p.s. feeling " funny " can be a side effect of an SSRI. It should also go away

as he adjusts - but mention it to his doctor anyway, just to be safe.

Today seems to be my day to be a naysayer.

My 14 year old son is on 20mg lexapro - with results showing up in

the first few weeks and now after months at full dose, he is a more

normal child than he has ever been in his entire life.

We definitely saw results.

When you say the lexapro had no effect do you mean some effect but

more is needed...or do you mean " no effect " .

I guess I can't see adding another med if there is no effect from the

lexapro.

When I've heard on this site of adding meds of this type to an ssri

it seemed to be to get a boost for an ssri that was already giving

some degree of relief - or to quell impulsiveness or violence.

Maybe since your question was about the fainting you wooshed by the

lexapro effect and I'm just misunderstanding.
