They agreed to keep her designation " for now " , but mentioned her marks will really suffer this term since she can't do the work. Is this fair? Is this what happens when a student is really sick. I just can't believe it. Hi -- My almost 13 y.o. is also gifted. First of all, they don't know that her grades will suffer. did extremely well in the independent study program thru the school district. We have her on a 504 plan, but she is still designated as a GATE student (gifted & talented).. It could be that CA is different then other places. Our psychiatrist actually wrote a note suggesting that should be in " home hospital " (meaning the district should provide a teacher to come to the house). We discussed it with the district and they mentioned the independent study program. She went in once a week to pick up new assignments and return completed ones. It took all the day to day school stress away, let her heal emotionally, and still enabled her to learn. Your daughter is obviously bright and intelligent. Once she gets past this hurdle she will be able to catch up if she needs to. I wouldn't worry too much about her education -- that will happen. Take care of her psyche right now. Good luck to you.
