Guest guest
Hi to all, Our 9 year old daughter has been battling severe OCD for the last 2 months now. She suffers with severe intrusive thoughts. We live in Canada. We don't have a child psychiatrist in our city, not even one near us. She was diagnosed by a behavioural pediatrician in the city. I am thinking of taking her out of town for an assessment. Can anyone recommend a good program, or doctor. We live near Detroit ....I have called the University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor, as they have a Children's Anxiety Program, but they don't specialize in OCD. I just don't know where to go. Our daughter is begging us every day to help her. I also have a question about CBT. She has seen a psychologist 8 times now, and they haven't really touched on her compulsions (counting her fingers, and checking he veins) or her obessions (death, the devil). Does the psychologist typically wait until the SSRI's kick in before they address these matters. I have talked to the doctor, and she assures me that this will take a long time. I know it will, but I'm just not sure she's getting the best help. Any guidance or advice anyone can give us would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much. nne
Guest guest
nne, They can still try some CBT theraphy before the meds kick in. Sometimes people use CBT before they use meds. Hopefully someone else can inform you of a good place in your area. Guest guest
Hi, nne, The OCD Foundation lists a hospital near me (I'm in Milwaukee) that specializes in ocd http://www.ocfoundation.org/1003/index.html I've only heard good things about Memorial Hospital http://rogershospital.org/index2.php > Hi to all, > > Our 9 year old daughter has been battling severe OCD for the last 2 > months now. Guest guest
nne, I spoke to a psychologist here who does cbt/erp for ocd children - he prefers to treat the children before and without ssri's - because then his treatment has a more dramatic noticable effect and the children buy into it wholeheartedly. On the other hand, my son's anxiety level (he's 14) was so high when we sought treatment (he put it at 8.5 on a scale of 1-10)that we started lexapro right away - he was too anxious to participate well in the cbt/erp. The ssri brought his anxiety level so low - and his ocd melted down to minimal that now cbt/erp is neither effective nor needed. How long has she been on an ssri? Has she reached treatment dose yet? I still recommend Memorial Hospital. > > > Hi to all, > > > > Our 9 year old daughter has been battling severe OCD > > for the last 2 > > months now. She suffers with severe intrusive > > thoughts. Guest guest
nne, My dd(14)also suffers from intrusive thoughts. There is hope with therapy that includes cbt and erp. It took her 9 months to get to the point where she can boss it back and has also habituated to the thoughts that scare her. She has thoughts of killing herself, killing others, worshipping the devil, death, and anything that is morally wrong. Now if she has a thought she has the tools to deal with it. I live in San Diego so I don't know of anyone in Michigan. Good luck in finding someone and remember there is hope! She is also on luvox and buspar for now. When she is ready to go off it, she will let me know. Guest guest
nne, I'm wondering if you live near Toronto? I live in the US but am from Toronto and 6 years ago when my son was first exhibiting signs of OCD I spoke with a woman from Toronto (can't remember her name) who was very involved with the local ocd association. I think I got her name from the OCF foundation in the US or maybe from the Sick Children's Hospital in Toronto. I know there is alot of support for tourette's in Toronto. Maybe you could try finding a tourette's group who potentially could give you info on ocd. I would also try London, Ontario if perhaps you are closer to London. Also try using google local, say for southern Ontario, and key in anxiety clinics, OCD, CBT therapists, etc. I think there is an OCF foundation in Canada? Hope this helps and let us know what happens. Sherri

Guest guest
Does anyone have experience with the Residential Treatment Center for adolescents with OCD at Memorial Hospital? If so, do you know if they have been successful with kids with severe OCD and PDD-NOS? Thanks. Guest guest
Hi nne, I live in Grand Rapids MI and have a recently diagnosed 7yr old son who is so far entrenched in his OCD he has almost completely stopped eating. I've had a really hard time finding qualified help on this side of the state also, but am pretty happy with his psychologist so far (after 4 visits) and have an appt next month w/ a psychiatrist in Holland (MI) which is about 40 mins west of Grand Rapids. Anyway, I did find this really good article by a Dr at Wayne State's Med school (in Detroit) http://www.med.wayne.edu/wayne20medicine/wm98/little.htm Sounds like they do alot of pediatric OCD research there and may even have some sort of treatment center or program. If anything, maybe they can point you in the right direction. I don't know how you would get ahold of this Dr. directly, but the main website for Wayne state's med school is www.med.wayne.edu (I think) and I thought they had a dr referral line listed somewhere on the site. Good luck and let me know if you do find a good treatment center in MI! ~ le marianne_nancy <marianne_nancy@...> wrote: Hi to all, Our 9 year old daughter has been battling severe OCD for the last 2 months now.
