Heehee, If your hands are good and clean you can play frisbee back and

forth with each other and put her back into her brew and she will

probably make a nice tasting kt for you - upside down, inside out or

topsy turvy. And since you both handled her she will probably know a

little more about what you both need for her to help you with.

I love handling my scobys!

Pervertedly,

Sorry everyone, I just realized how that may sound to newbies and I

don't advise it. I do love to handle my scobys with CLEAN, vinegared

hands but I don't throw them around.

Seriously, it does not matter at all whether the 'mother' is upside down,

downside up or cut in two or mashed in the liquidiser ..... it still will

brew just as well - no doubt about it. I do it all them time.

What did the 'playing with scoby' involve.

If you gave each other a body massage with it I should not recommend

it for brewing any more for hygienic reasons ;-)

You can even brew with just a very generous amount of starter liquid without

a scoby/mother.

I wouldn't change top- and bottomside all the time because at one

point you will like to take off old layers.

Do you? I only take layers off as they naturally drop off with old age ;-)

It really doesn't matter what is top and what is bottom, although, of course

the new scoby always grows on the top.

y'all are so funny! what a great thread!! no, my girlfriend and i

didn't give each other a body massage with the scoby (though that's

a GREAT idea!!). we just spun her in the liquid a little and

flipity-flopity-ied her a bit. you know. just stuff you'd do with

your children.

(never never never shake a scoby!)

REALLY! ;-) How extraordinary! My youngest is 14 already and much too

large to fit in the Kombucha jar, though. What a pity - a good idea

too late ;-)

I see you speak of your Kombucha as 'her'.

Well, my KT culture stems from a very efficacious ish one called

'Bob'. Now he WAS a size, about an inch thick ... speaking of obese ;-)

much too heavy to dance the highland fling ;-)

He fathered several equally hefty young 'nes, my pride and joy :-)

These just go plop into the jar when another new brew is being conceived.

I love the feel of my 'boys' and they look at me through the glass jars,

well enveloped in goody sugar-tea, spurring on the latest newcomer on top

still growing, but rarely measuring up to Bob Jr's thickness ....

When your 'old' layers fall off, new layers that are on top of it

will be disposed.

After three brews a layer is not so active any more. This is one good

reason for peeling off your scobies when they grow thick.

The peeled off scobies can go in the 'spare' container.

This is not according to my experience, however. Scobys remain active

for a surprisingly long time .. until they turn darker brown and floppy.

That's when they get promoted to bath flannels or Kombucha cream ;-)

> This is one good

> reason for peeling off your scobies when they grow thick.

The only reason I can see for peeling them is that they take too much

space in the jar. I usually brew with several smaller scobys or an

enormously thick one called Bob junior. He would NOT take kindly to peeling!

> The peeled off scobies can go in the 'spare' container.

Yes, that's where I put extra scobys which eat all the sugar out of the

KT they're in and produce a marvellously vinegary starter liquid which I

use to send scobys to people who want to start brewing, and I use it for

my brew, of course. Also makes great skin tonic and first aid on burns

and other wounds ...

yours apeelingly,

Margret;-)
