Hi, Robin. I know nothing about Lexapro so I can't help you there but I do

remember that when my youngest daughter, , was first diagnosed with OCD at

seven and was put on Luvox, the doctor prescribed Zyprexa to " calm " her in

the beginning. was screaming a lot at that time if memory serves! We

were told to not give her that particular dose for more than seven days and that

we should never put her back on that dose without consent from the doctor.

She was very tired and drooly the first day but much calmer after that. She did

stay on Zyprexa at a lower dose for a couple of years after that.

Unfortunately, I do not remember either dose. I don't know how your doctor

feels about

this though and he/she may not agree. Good luck! Kelley in NV

Hi Robin, sometimes a doctor will prescribe a quick-acting anti-anxiety med,

for example xanax, to cover the period of time until an SSRI can kick in.

These types of meds aren't as good in the long run due to potential for

addiction but can help in the short term.

I certainly do wish someone would figure out a way to help SSRIs kick in

faster, that would be very helpful.

Take care,

Kathy R. in Indiana

My son takes anafranil & risperidal. I took lexapro for 2 weeks for depression

but couldn't take the side effects-I was emotionally labile & depressed & my

hands & feet swelled up. I know it works well for some people, but I had a bad

reaction with it.

I also read on the side effects of Lexapro that it may cause increased

irritability. I plan on asking my doctor about this too, but if anyone

knows of anything that has helped their child, please let me know.

Thanks,

Thanks for all your advice. I actually found out yesterday that the

Lexapro can cause agitation especially in adolescents for the first

month or so. The doctor recommended Klonopin to take the edge off on an

as needed basis. But now that I know that this is only temporary (and

we've been through the first 2 weeks already), I have new hope.

Thanks again.

I remember when we were sitting in the psychiatrist office for the

first visit - he said that on a scale prozac was the most agitating,

paxil was on the other end - lexapro fell somewhere in between.

I'd have to say that, yes, he (13-14 at the time) was a little outside

his normal behavior during that first month or so while we increased

the dose (of lexapro) slowly - but,now that he's been on it for (I

think) over 12 weeks, he is as calm as he's ever been - he has the

occasional " overfrustration " but it happens for the same reasons it

used to and he brushes me off when I try to intervene - he wants to

handle it himself and he does a better job if I leave him alone - it's

as though he still loses control, but he gets contral back pretty

quickly. And he apologizes if he thinks anyone was upset by it.
