It's because people who join forums pay nothing for access privilege. When something is free, it tends to get abused by those who don't appreciate its value. And there is so *much* abuse in this category! <SOAPBOX ON> Moderators who will jump on Off-Topic posts will let untrimmed posts by the dozens slide by without a word. Why? Because OT posts polarize, upset, disgust, or bore the majority of members. Some will leave. And moderators would very much prefer that didn't happen. No one leaves because posts don't get trimmed. Untrimmed posts? Big deal, right? After all, most members top post so all the relevant information is at the top anyway, right? Who really cares that tacked onto that one- liner 'I agree!' or 'Thank You! post are 3 or 4 or 5 very recent, utterly redundant, previously posted notes, including all personal, group, and tag lines, ads, and images? All 40, 60, or 80 kilobytes of them! Who really cares that a 10-line response to a really long post contains the entire initial post, when only the first few lines would do? Those duplicated, replicated, doubled, tripled, and quadrupled redundant posts are called *WASTE*! Wasted hard drive space on servers and wasted hard drive space on the computer of *every* member who chooses the Digest or Individual Emails. And no matter the justification, wasted hard drive space costs money! If has to buy more machines to carry the redundant space you can bet *someone* is going to end up paying for them. Oh, that's right. Most members could care less because the service is free. Who needs to spend precious time trimming waste. Thanks a lot. <SOAPBOX OFF> Jimmy Joe
Guest guest
Why not change to individual email service? Dennis JJ wrote: >Acmeair writes, > > > >>the " digest " form of this board sucks. >> >> > > >
Guest guest
Why not read it on the web? I subscribe to 20 plus groups and would hate to get digests from all of them. The only digest I get is Robynn's Lyme List, she simply sends out articles that appear about lyme, w/o comment. I don't worry about viruses or attachments when I read on the web (and gets spammed a lot) Most people DO answer at the top (except Saul will reproduce the relevant part of a post and and post at the bottom), so it's easy to read, and I can ignore all the other stuff. People are not usually going to trim posts (I try to)--and I have been complained to about NOT trimming as well as trimming, if I don't have each relevant part of a prior post before my answer, so...you just can't please alll the people all the time. I find reading on the web convenient and easy. I alwyas put no email as my preference. That also allows me to catch up with my favorite groups several times a day and my less relevant ones infrequently. > > >Acmeair writes, > > > > > > > >>the " digest " form of this board sucks. > >> > >> > > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
WRONG!! It's only a very few places in the world where you are blessed with cheap/free internet services and super fast wide-band connections. Some of us pay big-time ... and sometimes we are limited to PDAs and other small screened 'windows' to service our slow dialup connections. This morning I spent 2+ hours downloading less than 100 emails ... probably around 20 redialed connections (at per call extra charges!!). To me, this is a major issue, but as you says " who cares ... " . No complaints ... just the way things are in the real world! Regards/, in Bangkok -----Original Message----- > > > > > > snipped bunches of good truisms < < < < < < < Oh, that's right. Guest guest
, if you go to: oxyplus/ you can find your groups listed (if you're logged in--if not, log in) and you can click on each one, and click on messages, and read each one without having to download. Guest guest
Hi Jill-- Web based email just doesn't work with poor phone lines. , like most web sites, times out and dumps you if their server doesn't hear from yours in a set time frame. Plus, I need to download during the day at the office, so I can work with my emails offline at night. But ya know what? It's just such a danged blessing to have, it just doesn't really make a difference!! -----Original Message----- .... and click on messages, and read each one without having to download. Guest guest
Dear Jimmy Joe, is making millions with the advertising that they glom onto our lists, so that is who is paying for the " free " service. Don't worry about it. As for trimming posts, I do it on my ozonetherapy list, but some people complain because then they have to go into the archives to see what the original post was about, if they have missed it, or want to reread it. So you can't please all the people all the time. Best of health!
