Guest guest
Sharon, I don't see how they can deny PT for Danny. Let me know how Mama bear comes out. LOL Pat K I have just begun to fight Mama Bear has her claws out and as I start my fight with the county co-op that provides services for our school like speech, PT, OT and etc. I have been trying for 3 years to get Danny PT in school - they can do it during his PE time he won't miss anything in PE they don't do anything but Dodge Ball and my son is the first to get hit cause he can't run away from the ball - oh well I digress. Got his PT eval from our private PT here are his scores - they are scattered all over the place Running speed and agility - 8years Balance - 16 years bilateral coordination 12 years strength 9 years Upper Limb Coordination 6 years. He is 11 years old - I think he qualifies for PT based on the last two alone and probably running as well. How he got balance at 16 years I will never know but he can balance on anything it's amazing. If they don't give him PT I am going to bring in my advocate or my lawyer haven't decided how far I want to take it yet. I dropped off this report to the co-op case worker yesterday we will see if she calls. If they say no they are going to make me very very mad. Guest guest
update from my lovely case worker. She called and informed me that they will send a person to observe him when school starts again and if she sees something they will do a full eval. I have currently agreed to this, but we are putting him through PT this summer so he will probably work out some of his problems - I should send them the bill that my insurance wont' pay Sharon From: pkuenstler@... <pkuenstler@...>Subject: Re: I have just begun to fightautism Date: Wednesday, June 3, 2009, 10:32 PM Sharon, I don't see how they can deny PT for Danny. Guest guest
I know what you mean. I should send the school district a bill. The only education that karac has gotten has been at my house. In 11 years in the public school they have not taught him one thing!! I taught him to read, print, type on computer, add on calculator, and spell etc. I probably spent $100,000 in doing it, not to mention the time and energy that it took. Guest guest
Our school district is doing something different this next year. Due to budget crunches, the district is getting more creative. They are now going to offer virtual classes for K - 12th grade. Students will be allowed to pick and choose the classes they want to take on-line, and the others can be taken at the physical school. We're going to go this route, so I can be guaranteed by boys will receive real academic work for reading, spelling, math, and science. I don't think these subjects are really taught in life skills classes. Guest guest
You know it's sad that our kids can't learn in school --- I know it's no ideal to have to teach them...I'm just glad you have that option...I just got off the phone with a friend of mine who has a little guy with Aspergers....he's in a awful situation at school...peers are so mean...sort of bullying, etc...I wish there was a way for her to be able to stay home and help him...but she is single and has to work.... I'm so grateful that you little men have a mom at home who can help them......I'm grateful that if I have to, I can do the same with ---- again though as I write this, I know that it should not be this way --- we should be able to get a fair and appropriate education for our kids....we pay Taxes....it's ridiculous that we (or some of us, as I know we do have some good schools out there) -- that we have to jump through hoops to help our kids get an education... Guest guest
The main problem is a lack of qualified teachers that specialize in teaching autistic kids. Currently, it's pot luck. If you don't understand the child, how can you teach them effectively? How can you maximize their full potential? A degree in V.E. is as bogus as can be. It's a generalized study of ALL disabilities. It barely covers the surface of any disability. They can't possibly know, what they need to know (to teach kids with autism). I've had teachers, tell me that since they've taught kids with downs syndrome/ mental retardation, they are more than qualified to teach autistic kids....NOT. It is very scary to think how little they know about autism. Guest guest
grrrr grrr grrr LOL, LOL, Pat K I have just begun to fight Called the co-op to tell them I didn't like their decision to observe and then decide to do an evaluation based on their observations. I asked how could they gather information on how well he does by watching him play bombardment - the boys hit him first he comes home everyday with bruises on him everytime they play that game. I then told her that if he does not qualify for PT next year because I am privately putting him through PT this summer that I was going to send her the bill. She did not think I was funny but kept her mouth shut. I told her that I would call her the first week of school and make sure that observation took place and she said it will be ready to go. Yeah right. I know I have to sign the paperwork for it and I betcha I don't see it for a month. Mama Bear is on the prowl. Guest guest
How do they get away with it? I remember at one of Karac's school meetings they were listing what Karac had accomplished that semester and one of the things they listed was that he had learned to sight read 30 words. Guest guest
I guess I take my school district for granted. I know we have had some "bad" teachers along the way (well only one), and they still try to pull some stuff to make it easier on themselves:) , but they do push academics. They have several levels of classrooms - resource room for kids with learning disabilities (high function autistic, ADHD, etc.) They teach them academics based off the PSSA testing, but they go at their own pace. Then they have a life skills class which is also academic, but geared toward gaining employment out of high school (downs syndrom, mild MR, ODD, etc.) and then they have Maddie's class with autism and other issues. The four girls that are in there are all autistic, moderate MR, downs, and some other issues on top. Even though Maddie's is the lowest in the school, they still teach her reading (they use Edmark and a phonics program), math (counting, adding, money and time), and science for Maddie since she is the highest functioning in her class - she goes upstairs to the other life skills class to receive that. In fact, they have taught her stuff that my husband and I didn't think she would be able to learn. We do still have our downfalls with the school, but on the whole I'm pleased with them. I also think it helps - there is an autistic school only 40 minutes away. So the one year when we were having problems with getting what we wanted for Maddie, all I had to say was we were going to look at the school. Amazing, she had the curriculum I wanted them to try by the end of the week:) Rhonda From: pkuenstleraol (DOT) com <pkuenstleraol (DOT) com>Subject: Re: I have just begun to fightAutismBehaviorProbl emsgroups (DOT) comDate: Wednesday, June 3, 2009, 10:32 PM Sharon, I don't see how they can deny PT for Danny. Guest guest
You know, I so get what you all are saying about this. started at his Autism school on May 4th, and even though his behavior at home has really escalated and it has been very rough, he seems to be so much happier and actually learning some things that are good for him to learn and he is doing better. I am so glad he is out of Gates school. I am still dealing with some crap with them though. Well, two of tghe teachers. Dr W and I are certain. LOL, Pat K I have just begun to fight Mama Bear has her claws out and as I start my fight with the county co-op that provides services for our school like speech, PT, OT and etc.I have been trying for 3 years to get Danny PT in school - they can do it during his PE time he won't miss anything in PE they don't do anything but Dodge Ball and my son is the first to get hit cause he can't run away from the ball - oh well I digress.Got his PT eval from our private PT here are his scores - they are scattered all over the placeRunning speed and agility - 8yearsBalance - 16 yearsbilateral coordination 12 yearsstrength 9 yearsUpper Limb Coordination 6 years. He is 11 years old - I think he qualifies for PT based on the last two alone and probably running as well. How he got balance at 16 years I will never know but he can balance on anything it's amazing. If they don't give him PT I am going to bring in my advocate or my lawyer haven't decided how far I want to take it yet.I dropped off this report to the co-op case worker yesterday we will see if she calls. If they say no they are going to make me very very mad.Sharon Shop Inspiron, Studio and XPS Laptops at Dell.com Limited Time Offers: Save big on popular laptops at Dell Limited Time Offers: Save big on popular laptops at Dell

Guest guest
Yes, I read recently that when churches reach our to the specially-abled...the most effective programs make their program geared towards children with Autism --- Once this happens, once it's appropriate for a child who has Autism, it will be appropriate for other disabilities too.... YES, YES, I agree Sara. e From: Sara <sarapoli@...>autism Sent: Thursday, June 4, 2009 3:30:37 PMSubject: Re: I have just begun to fight The main problem is a lack of qualified teachers that specialize in teaching autistic kids.
