X-Ray's AP vs. .

We have had a lot of different x-rays taken over the past few months and we have

been through our share of doctors. We have scoliosis sets for both Abby and

ial..but it's hard to compare them side by side because they are never the

same view. This is very frustrating. I know each doctor prefers something

different, but to make sure we get the right X-Ray view when dealing with less

experienced local tech's..what is the best standing view? From behind or from

the front? And what is that called? AP or PL or something so I can tell the

tech exactly what I want..it would be nice to have some consistency in all the

madness..

I don't know the answer to this, but with Ian it is with his back to the "wall" and with Noelle they have her facing the wall. This is just at our walk in clinic, but the tech said he does this because with girls the breast tissue absorbs more radiation, so he always turns them so that it is taken from her back. I can't remember how Shriners did it though. Very interesting..I didn't think about that, good question to ask next time we

go in! Do both your children have scoliosis? Just asking b/c both mine do and I

would like to hear another's story..

Ami,Yes, they both have progressive. Ian was 43* at his worst. He was zero for about a year after casting, but he's slowly creeping back up there now. He's in a Providence brace right now. Funny...I also thought Ian had a really big muscle on one side of his back before we realized he had scoliosis. My pediatrician initially thought that maybe he was missing a muscle on one side until she consulted with another pediatrician in the office. Luckily they caught his right at 6 months of age.Supposedly infantile and juvenile are not supposed to be linked, but you cannot convince me of that! We're considering the Rigo-cheneau brace. Waiting to hear back from

Shriners on what they think about their x-rays. Noelle (12-2-01)Ian (8-15-04) From: luckyvtmama <amibeautinet@...>infantile scoliosis treatment Sent: Wed, August 18, 2010 1:38:05

,

My daughter Abigail is 3.5 years right now. She wasn't diagnosed until she was 3 years old but she had a rib hump at 2 years old I just didn't know what it was, thought it was a muscle thing. I first started asking questions when she was 20 months old but every specialist we saw (orthopeadic/physical therapist) said she was fine.

My son ial will be 2 on September 2nd :) He's a little different, he has congenital heart defects, but his is infantile as well, he's only at 13 degrees and we are watching for progression.

You are the first person I've met where both siblings have scoliosis..may I ask if they are both progressive?

Hi,

My understanding is that AP means anterior to posterior and PA means posterior

to anterior. Our dd had AP taken for years, and, since she has fused ribs, her

curve is more curved in the AP view. Recently, we changed dr.s, because of an

insurance change, and the new dr. takes all PA xrays. When I questioned this,

they told me that they always do PA because that way there is less radiation

going into the organs because it is going through the back first. My dd is

eight and has congenital.

Wouldn't it be nice if they'd give us parents a manual that tells us everything

to look for? *l* We talked to Orthotic solutions in VA about Abigail but 1. we

couldn't afford the brace and after sending down pictures I never heard back and

we ended up going with casting anyways. If we get another cast sore like this

last one, Stage 3 ulcer, then we might have to reconsider..sorry to hear that

Ian is creeping back up but glad you had a good pediatrician that asked for a

second opinion! Could you et me know how things go with the Rigo-Cheneau brace?

Ami, if our insurance won't cover it, then I will stick with the Boston for Noelle and the Providence for Ian. Ian is doing well in his providence and maybe Noelle just needs some tweaking. $3800 x 2 kids is just way too much! ,I don't know how you are doing it with 2 kids with scoli! You are an amazing Mom! These prices make me all the more grateful for Shriners, that cost is crazy over so many braces. Even co-pays could get out of hand over the years.
