Guest guest
Hi Amy,My daughter Meredith Anne was born with a cleft lip and palate and then we discovered her scoliosis at 5 months old. She is now 4 1/2 and the only other issue she has is that she is nearsighted and wears glasses. As far as her speech goes she doesn't have a problem. If there is any other information I could provide let me know.tteOn Aug 6, 2010, at 11:20 PM, Amy wrote:This may be completely off base, but I was wondering if anyone has kids with speech problems or probable cleft palettes? In Makenna's list of extremely unique medical issues, she has a speech issue that is caused by a valopharyngeal disfunction (VPD) and a very slight submucous cleft palette. It may very well be another characteristic to add the her underlying genetic condition - and that may be the extent of it. But I never know exactly where the dots are going to connect with Makenna; I just know they will, so I thought I would throw it out there and see if anyone else has any similar issues.Amy, Mom to Makenna (3 years old, 4th cast Aug 10th Chicago Shriners)You can read Makenna's full story at www.sosmakenna.com
Guest guest
Thanks, tte. I thought I might be onto something... and more people would have similar symptoms... but it's probably not even related to her underlying condition. Guest guest
There was a study I read once that that listed 20 co-conditions that are common with scoliosis and having a high arched palate was one of them..I'm posting the site as a new Topic b/c it has some neat information as well on other things a lot of people mention.. -Ami Abigail 45/35/21RVAD currently out of cast while waiting for sore to heal ial TGA/VSD/ASD 13 C-curve > > This may be completely off base, but I was wondering if anyone has kids with speech problems or probable cleft palettes? > In Makenna's list of extremely unique medical issues, she has a speech issue that is caused by a valopharyngeal disfunction (VPD) and a very slight submucous cleft palette. Guest guest
Giana has been in speech therapy for a year now. We have had to do alot of oral excercisses to strenghten and help with tougne movements so that she can make sounds. After a year she is doing great, she only has a 20% delay in articulation. Her palate is high. - Mom to Giana, 2nd cast Shriners Hospital Chicago Re: Speech and Cleft Palette There was a study I read once that that listed 20 co-conditions that are common with scoliosis and having a high arched palate was one of them..I'm posting the site as a new Topic b/c it has some neat information as well on other things a lot of people mention..-Ami Abigail 45/35/21RVAD currently out of cast while waiting for sore to healial TGA/VSD/ASD 13 C-curve >> This may be completely off base, but I was wondering if anyone has kids with speech problems or probable cleft palettes? > In Makenna's list of extremely unique medical issues, she has a speech issue that is caused by a valopharyngeal disfunction (VPD) and a very slight submucous cleft palette. Been wondering about my youngest..I dream of the day he'll say " daddy " and he'll be 2 in a few weeks. > > > > This may be completely off base, but I was wondering if anyone has kids with speech problems or probable cleft palettes? > > In Makenna's list of extremely unique medical issues, she has a speech issue that is caused by a valopharyngeal disfunction (VPD) and a very slight submucous cleft palette. Guest guest
I just read some of the groups post regarding speech and a high arched palate. I actually just got told from our neuromuscular Dr. that has an "unusually high palate." I'm so surprised to read that some of the people in the group have been told this as well. I have been on a mission to find the etiology of 's symptoms since he was 9months old. I wont even get into how many specialist we've been to. It's allot! I'm actually in the process of trying to get into the National Institute of Health. So far he has been tested for Horizontal Gaze Palsy w/ Progressive Scoliosis, Prader Willi Syndrome, and we're waiting for test results for Ehler Danlos IV. His symptoms are as follows: Torticolis, Hypotonia, strabismus, nastagmus, epicanthel folds, optic nerve atrophy, dysmorphic features, scoliosis, high palate, developmentally delayed, 1 extra vertebrae. He has been in speech since he was one. His speech therapist thinks he may have apraxia, however, they normally don't diagnose it until their a little older.
