Guest guest
I will be praying that has not regressed any more! I know Isabella is a couple years younger but she hasn't gained any weight since going in to the cast last summer and I let her eat constantly trying to put some weight on her but it doesn't work . I'm anxious to see what her ped has to say when we see him next week. Hang in there and let me know how the appt goes on Friday. Anyone else going to be there? I am feeling anxious about this visit. Especially since the previous ckup was not so great. To recap about the last appt.......seeing the xray it was obvious that there had been some regression. At that point his doctor increased brace wear hoping that would help. The brace time was increased to 16 hours a day(he was only wearing it at night at the time)....more if I possible. So Friday we will find out if that increased brace time has helped his curve. And of course with all the talk about a if a brace can correct a curve has me really wondering about this dang brace. I am going to push for a new one because he has been in this one for over a year and it now has a mysterious crack in it too. Before you say he has been in a brace for over a year?! Yes. is so tiny. Guest guest
Oh Tasha, on one of my other "boards" we refer to this as the "great weight debate" lol. So sorry you too are dealing with it. Grace has her well-child checkup tomorrow and I'm dreading that they're going to start in on us too. Grace at last check by me and at the numerous other dr. appts, lol, will be 4 yrs on 9/6, is 37" (I think that's right) and is only 30 lbs. She has been right around 30 lbs for over a year. She was a few lbs heavier when we got home from the hospital last year, but she was still retaining some fluids. Grace's problem though is she also has the history of omphalocele that has been repaired, but I truly believe that she can only eat so much. Even her favorite foods, she eat small portions and say she's full. We try to feed her more often, but if you can't get them to eat, you can't get them to eat! Luckily, her pediatrician has been with us since before Grace was born, so she knows her "curve" and hasn't been too concerned, I've been more concerned than her at times. But there is literally nothing to Grace. She is as light as a feather, just bulky with a cast or brace. Let us know how the appt goes and give that boy some chocolate! Oh, btw, have you tried adding like heavy cream to his foods and real butter? Those are two things that you can easily hide in things like mashed potatoes that can increase the calories but not make them taste much different (although in my opinion much better! lol) *hugs* Jane From: Tasha Fontenot <ryanswalk@...>infantile scoliosis treatment Sent: Mon, August 16, 2010 11:14:59 AMSubject: Friday, August 20th and weight Hi everyone, will go for his check-up/xray on Friday at ish Rite. Guest guest
Hi Tasha, We always seem to miss each other at ish Rite! We don't go back for cast #7 until oct 8th. I really hope the brace and the extra wear time has helped or at least held his curve. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I can't get isaiah to gain weight either! He weighs 27 lbs IN cast. He hasn't gained a pound for a whole year and actually weighs less now than he did before casting. He is a very picky eater but has gotten better lately but it doesn't seem to help that he's eating more. I think they burn it off so quickly! Isaiah just turned two this week and there is no slowing him down. With two boys you know that times two! Please let us know how the brace check goes. Guest guest
Hello! I am not so very helpful all the time with scoli, but weight I can do. My sone Timmy was only 5 pounds at 4 months old, and we found out he had a pancreatic enzyme dificiency. Once we figured that out, he was 6 months and 6 pounds, plus he is diabetic. I had the same concern, filling him with good food, hopefully organic, but not junk. We still have him on whole milk, and add heavy cream to it, not a lot but some. We add extra virgin olive oil to anything we can. We also put butter on things, and are thankful that he loves peanut butter. I am always comparing items, and I make sure I pick the one with the most fat, then I look at calories. Intead of ketchup, we have ranch as his dip. I am thankful he likes cheese (organic) and I get the full fat kind. You can also consult a GI doctor with helpful ways to put on weight. I hope this helps! mommy to Timmy 31 months old, 1st cast down to 45 degrees From: Tasha Fontenot <ryanswalk@...>Subject: Friday, August 20th and weightinfantile scoliosis treatment Date: Monday, August 16, 2010, 6:14 PM Hi everyone, will go for his check-up/xray on Friday at ish Rite. Yes. is so tiny. The boys had their 5 year check-up last week. is 44 inches tall and only 37 lbs. His brother is 11 lbs heavier! Their pediatrician said she wanted to see some more weight on him. HOW?????? I literally let him eat whatever he wants! I even buy the best junk food I can!!! Within limits. He needs calories....please don't judge me. He does not like milk unless it is strawberry, chocolate or vanilla so I buy those. Organic of course.....I have to make up for all the junk food! And even then I have to force him to drink it. He is growing and playing, is never sick and seems to be pretty darn happy. What do I feel like I am not helping him?! Does anyone else have this problem with their child's weight? Once we figured that out, he was 6 months and 6 pounds, plus he is diabetic. I had the same concern, filling him with good food, hopefully organic, but not junk. We still have him on whole milk, and add heavy cream to it, not a lot but some. We add extra virgin olive oil to anything we can. We also put butter on things, and are thankful that he loves peanut butter. I am always comparing items, and I make sure I pick the one with the most fat, then I look at calories. Guest guest
Good luck on the brace check.... Know that I will be praying for you! As far as weight goes, I'm waiting to see what Noelle will be at her 4 year mark..... I think she dropped in her weight percentile because I think she has lost a bit or stayed the same since last year, which is okay for us because she wasn't below average. We do organic milk, whole milk will pack on the calories. We also do lots of yogurt drinks which we "water down" with milk so it isn't as thick. If will drink smoothies, you can add lots of stuff to that, especially peanut butter if he's not allergic to nuts. I always found that Noelle was a big drinker rather than an eater so I focused on what I could add to her drinks to make them more nutritious and caloric. I always found that Noelle was a big drinker rather than an eater so I focused on what I could add to her drinks to make them more nutritious and caloric. Yes. is so tiny. Guest guest
Thanks so much! The boys love smoothies. I never thought about putting peanut butter in one. I am going to have to try that. My biggest problem is his brother LOVES all things with milk. So what I could really "beef" up with will eventually make super chunky. Which BTW we call them Slim and Husky. Guest guest
Hey Tasha, GOOD LUCK on Friday!!! Also, I thought I'd chime in on the calorie-boosting, as this has been a concern of ours, too, over the past few years! Since doesn't like peanut butter or milk, that does make it challenging. I know you're a great cook and have probably tried about everything! Has he tried the Kefir yogurt drinks? They have lots of sugar, and I think they may have fat, but not sure. Made by Lifeway, I get it at Publix, and they also carry it at the health food store here. Also, we freeze the stoneyfield farms yogurt tubes--I think they're full fat yogurt since they are for little kids--and that makes a great treat/snack. Have you ever tried the full-fat vanilla yogurt with chocolate syrup (I found one called Ah!laska, which has no yucky stuff)? Add some sliced almonds and you've got a great dessert or snack! And we put Ghirardeli chocolate chips (hey, if you're gonna do chocolate, do it right, lol!) in his oatmeal while it's hot--they get all melty and yum. Flax meal goes great in there, too--adds some fat and is hidden by the chocolate. Does he like black olives? Todd has always loved those on pizza, and as a side dish, ha ha. Ranch is great as not just a dip--but you can use it in sandwiches, quesadillas, on bean dip, and even for dipping pizza (I admit, that is pretty yummy to me, too). You can also use it to coat chicken before you dredge it in crumbs to fry. It's also good as a marinade for grilling. (We get the Marzetti brand, which seems to have less of the junky stuff in it.) also , I add powedered milk to the boxed mac and cheese, which makes it yummier in addition to more nutritious. Todd is also really into the Parmesan cheese these days. If you haven't tried that, it may be worth a try. You can do zucchini or yellow squash " moons " in olive oil til GBD and then top with tons of Parmesan--let him do it himself, of course. Todd wil eat a whole zuke himself, that way. With the olive oil and cheese, there's more calories than a typical veggie dish. (I get a kind of Parm that's just cheese, no anti-caking stuff, but it's the powdery kind in a glass jar.) I probably went overboard with all that. Sorry. I tend to get carried away in the kitchen. Maybe there is something new that will like. Will be sending up prayers for y'all for Friday. I'll be looking for your update when you can post. , Mommy to Todd
Guest guest
Tasha,We have the same problem with Bryce. He didn't gain any weight for like a year....which I will assume partly contributes to his lack of correction. He just wasn't really growing...height or weight. I know you can search the Internet for high calorie snacks and shakes for toddlers. Also, our doctor gave us some print outs, so I would call your ped office. They should be able to give you some recipes.Bryce loves milk so we are lucky there. We add unflavored toddler formula to his milk which is great because it adds calories without adding any more quantity. With the cast and his reflux, Bryce just can't seem to take too much in at once. You could try to add that to the flavored milk he gets. I think Enfamil is the only brand that sells the toddler formula that is unflavored. My SIL is a nurse at a children's hospital and she just suggested trying add-ins to what Bryce already eats. Add butter to veggies, butter both sides of the bread when you make grilled cheese, put 2 slices of cheese on grilled cheese instead of one, add flaxseed to yogurt, etc. We tried some of those but it was too hard for me to remember...and I also have a 4 year old that doesn't need the extra "stuff". You could always make smoothies for one with frozen yogurt and with fatty ice cream for the other :)Let us know if you get any good ideas :)Take care, Jen Pickerington, Ohio Mommy to Bryce, 2 years old Started with 48 degree curve (laying down) Cast #8 - Rochester, NY From: Tasha Fontenot <ryanswalk@...>Subject: Friday, August 20th and weightinfantile scoliosis treatment Date: Monday, August 16, 2010, 6:14 PM Hi everyone, will go for his check-up/xray on Friday at ish Rite. Guest guest
Thanks ! I'll update Friday afternoon. WOW! You gave me lots of ideas. We get the Stoneyfield farms too sometimes. They are on a kick right now with these little yougurt drinks, can't remember the brand. I have never heard of the Kefir ones. I'll have to look for those. I think I may have a good idea with the vanilla yogurt. He will eat that and I can doctor it up with some good stuff.......Ghirardeli chocolate chips! YUM! And the zucchini sounds great! I am going to try that this week. Hey if he won't eat it I will! Thanks so much for all the ideas!!!!
