Short break from the cast?

Hi,

My husband and I would love any feedback you could share with us on having a

break from the cast. Twice now our son's cast has become too tight too soon and

they've given us the option of taking it off 1-2 weeks early and going cast-free

until the upcoming casting date. We chose to have it adjusted instead. My heart

wants so badly to give him that freedom, go swimming, take a back, play in the

sand, be able to just rub his back as he falls asleep... but we were

afraid/concerned that, after allowing him that awesome and incredible freedom,

putting it back on would be devastating for him and we would end up feeling

cruel. He has low muscle tone and struggles continuously with the weight (he is

26 mo). How does your child respond to having a break time? Do they adjust okay

to having it re-applied? Is it a positive experience for all concerned? Of

course, I'm hoping everyone will tell me it's wonderful, as we're at that point

again and need to make a decision quickly.

Hi Patrice,

My son, , was casted at a hospital that usually does not give cast breaks, but I continued to bug his doctor until they allowed it. It was for only about 2 or 3 out of 6 casts. First and foremost I think you really need to know your child. How do you think he would handle it?

is very easy going and handled his one day cast breaks just fine. I know his twin brother would not have done the same.

We absolutely LOVED this time!!!!! It was such a special time for our entire family. You see while was going through 14 months of casting, our entire family did without certain things because was doing without.

His cast free days were days to celebrate. And I made it very clear that the ONLY reason we were doing certain things(swimming, water play, sand and dirt fun, Popsicles, etc.......ANYTHING messy!)was because the cast was off.

If you are feeling that he needs a break and you think you all(mainly him)can handle it, I say GO FOR IT and have some FUN!!!!!!!!!

Now all that being said I think a whole week would have been hard for me and . Just my thoughts for us personally.

The longest break we ever had while in cast was 2 days. Grace was fine with it going back on and actually missed it. She likes the cast much more than the brace and still asks periodically if she can have her cast back. I think it would be case by case, but hey, try it once and then you'll know if you want to try it again.

We were concerned about the short break (Londynn had her cast off 12 days prior

to being recasted) but it was fine - we enjoyed the swimming and baths and sand

box. When she got her cast back on - it was just old hat, she wasn't mad or

irritable, she just went on about her business just as if nothing was different

or had changed. She is 18 months old - a little difference in age - but not

alot. It does not appear to us that the time off effected her numbers either.

No problem Patrice, just remember, kids are resillient AND they forget easy. Grace had forgotten what a brace was when we got the current one, even though she had worn one before, for over a year, it had been more than 6 months prior and she had no recollection.

Just like if you do major surgery on a kid, within a few months, they won't remember, AND, they are up and moving much quicker than we are. They adapt. They're used to trying to do what they're told not to (had your kid in timeout recently?? lol) So being in a cast is really no different. They get it AND they forget it, lol.

If your babes curve(s) are high w/ significant rotation…I wouldn’t

go w/ out for too long.  If they’re low w very min. to low rotation, I would consider

doing it for a short amount of time.  Never more than 2 wks though…I could be a

special time for you and your babe.  You miss hugs and so does your babe.
