Guest guest
HEY CATHY! WELCOME TO C.A.S.T. YOU ARE IN THE RIGHT PLACE! WE ARE IN OUR 2ND CAST RIGHT NOW! I NOTICED MY DAUGHTER'S CURVE AT 9 MO. OLD AROUND CHRISTMAS OF 2009. TOOK HER TO OUR PED. AT 9 MO. CHECK UP & OUR PED. DID NOT NOTICE IT & I FORGOT TO POINT IT OUT....THOUGHT I WAS MAKING SOMETHING OUT OF NOTHING...WELL AT AROUND 11 MO. I JUST KNEW HER SPINE WAS NOT RIGHT..IT CURVED TO THE LEFT! TOOK HER IN & THEY X-RAYED AND SAID SIERRA HAD SCOLIOSIS. WE LIVE DOWN ON THE GULF COAST IN ALABAMA AND NO ONE AROUND THIS AREA HAD EVER HEARD OF SCOLIOSIS IN AN INFANT!!!! SO THAT VARY DAY I HIT THE INTERNET TRYING TO FIND OUT AS MUCH INF. AS POSSIBLE. I FOUND ISOP & HEATHER CALLED ME RIGHT AWAY. THANK GOODNESS DR. K IS IN BIRMINGHAM, AL. AT CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL AND IS TRAINED IN MEHTA CASTING. WE HAD AN APPT. THE VERY NEXT WEEK. SIERRA'S CURVE WAS 34 DEGREES & A RVAD OF 25. DR. K SAID IT WAS MORE THAN LIKELY PROGRESSIVE. WE CASTED HER AT 12 MO. ON APRIL 22ND 2010 FOR 7 WEEKS....SHE IS ALREADY DOWN TO 26 DEGREES OUT OF CAST. HER 2ND CAST WAS PUT ON JUNE 9TH & DR. K IS HOLDING HER AT AROUND 17 DEGREES. SHE HAD A BRIAN & SPINE MRI AT THE SAME TIME AS THE 2ND CASTING....EVERYTHING IS NORMAL....THANK GOODNESS! SIERRA'S IS INDEED IDIOPATHIC. WE GO BACK AUG. 11TH FOR 3RD CAST. IT IS DIFFICULT IN THE SUMMER TIME IN SOUTH EAST ALABAMA WITH A CAST, BUT SIERRA IS DOING GREAT, JUST LIKE A NORMAL 15 MO. OLD. I AM SO GLAD WE CASTED. IT CAN BE HARD ON EVERYONE BUT IT IS DOABLE! WE ARE TRYING TO AVOID ANY TYPE OF SURGERY! DR. K SAYS SHE MAY HAVE TO WEAR A BRACE AT NITE UNTILL PUBERTY. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE FROM WHAT I CAN UNDERSTAND! SORRY TO BE SO LONG WINDED BUT I WAS WHERE YOU WERE NOT TO LONG AGO & I WAS TOTALLY FREAKING OUT. THIS SITE WILL HELP YOU SO MUCH!!! GOOD LUCK & KEEP US POSTED! KRISTI D. JONES MOMMY TO SIERRA 15. MO. OLD 2ND CAST 34 DEGREES DOWN TO 26 DEGREES. 3RD CAST SCHEDULED FOR AUG. 11TH From: cjustl Sent: Friday, July 23, 2010 2:15 PM infantile scoliosis treatment Subject: New here Hi!We are VERY new to this world of scoliosis. My daughter, Kiya, will be 20 months old next week. She was diagnosed with moderate scoliosis in June of this year. She has had an MRI that came back normal (thank goodness). We are seeing a doctor here in Madison, WI and he is telling us to repeat xrays in 3 months and decide from there. He mentioned the Boston brace and possibly body casting but didn't give a lot of detail. My daughter's curve is currently at 36%. After much research on my own, I read about Mehta casting. I don't even know if my daughter would qualify for this type of cast. We are looking into applying at Shriner's hospital in Chicago. We adopted my daughter from Ethiopia last year. She came home at just under 6 months of age with very low muscle tone. She is yet to walk independently but is getting close. We have her in PT and are looking to qualify for Early intervention in our state. We worry about not doing anything and it getting a lot worse and we worry that casting will hold her back devleopment wise. So much to decide....We are hoping to gain insight, info and support as we navigate this process for our daughter. Thanks in advance for any advice, info, etc. Anyone been to Shriner's in Chicago? Advice as we start that process?mom, to Kiya, 20 months
