Guest guest
Hi ! Oh I'm so excited for you guys! Enjoy this cast free time with Kaitlyn, but in the end, the casting isn't so bad and it's so worth it. We can either try to meet up beforehand so I can help explain some things to you or we can meet after when she has the cast on and I can help with whatever questions you stumble upon. That's great news and it'll be here before you know it! I'm hoping we can meet some other families from the group on that day I'm not sure if you any of you will be there on that date? My husband and my Mom will be going with me, and I'm so glad! So we have 3 more weeks of playin' in the water and tubbies happy for that and thankful I know Chicago does the EDF casts, but they call it rissor casts?...when I asked the care cordinator if it was indeed rissor casts or EDF casts...she said "they are EDF, we just call them rissor" does that seem odd to anyone? - Mommy to Kaitlyn (12 months) 40*
Guest guest
, I am overjoyed you have your first casting date! I know of 3 of our friends who will be in Chicago for casting Aug. 10th. Shirley & little Adelyn, Amy & Makenna, & Rhonda & Riley. Wonderful families and there will very well be even more. Makenna will be entering cast #4, Riley cast#3, & little Adelyn #2. You will be with a great group of families. Chicago does derotational casting. In the hospital and consents that are signed all are for Risser casting. This is more common than you would think. The Derotational casting article co-authored by casting doctors from Loma , CA, SLC Shriners, UAB, Birmingham, University of Rochestor, Erie, PA & our doctor at Chicago refers to Mehta's modifications to Cotrel & Morels technique of derotation cast correction. Dr. S. has used Derotational casting when discussing it with us. Rest assured you are not getting a traditional Risser for Kaitlyn. I know it is scary and confusing. Let us know if you need anything. Kaitlyn will do great! Guest guest
Unfortunately EDF casting is not a billable insurance code in the US as of yet. Hopefully soon it will be. In the mean time in order to treat and be paid US physicians must bill under the Risser code. It is annoying as it is confusing for parents and often uneducated staff and secretaries who do not actually know the differences. Guest guest
It is hard with so many terms being used for our little ones casts. It is probably a decision best left to the doctors who are casting and publishing. I can assure you the care coordinator at Shriners as well as all the nurses and surgical staff at our hospital including the residents, radiology staff and even who trims the cast has never had an issue explaining or answering questions about the cast applied to our child. I hope that is standard at casting centers in the Shriners network. If not, it would be a great idea to discuss it with the centers Chief of Staff for further education. Just a thought. Guest guest
Hi , Congrats on getting a cast date! This is a very emotional time and I can totally relate..... It's very bittersweet, isn't it? Great that you have this wonderful treatment option scheduled, but fear of the unknown and and putting this little turtle shell on your precious baby is a lot to grasp. And, yes, right now the terminology that is used is "Risser cast" even though the Mehta technique is being utilized. Guest guest
, So glad you got your date! Yes, our hospital was using the term Risser, it was changed for sure on our last outpatient form. I think that happens a lot, just old habits- especially when you know you are getting a Mehta Method/ EDF. Guest guest
Congrats ! Theres a lot of folks going to Chicago on CAST, so Im hoping you can meet up with another family while you are there. Talking to other parents going through the same or similar set of issues always makes the journey a bit easier...Thats great that your hubby and mum are able to go w/ you! Keep us posted! Guest guest
Yes, please refer to the derotation article (which can be found in the FILES section of CAST)as this is the 1st medical journal published in America about the effectiveness of applying EDF during an infants rapid rate of growth. Instead of waiting until the childs past 2... The authors of the article are all docs who were trained by Mehta on the principles of her Early Treatment w/ EDF method since 2005. Not sure what reasoning was behind changing the name of the technique to derotational casting instead of exactly what it is....Early Treatment with EDF. Im hoping the American docs will include Early Treatment to the title of their next derotational article as you cannot harness the childs rapid rate of growth to train the young spine to grow straight without this important factor. Early Treatment. You'll get Early Treatment & EDF in Chicago...No worries. Guest guest
This name confusion is not good. I really hope we can all get on the same page with proper terminology. Without it, children will be receiving all sorts of casts in the U.S and everywhere....perhaps without Early Treatment...Which we all know is crucial for this to treatment modality to be effective. Early Treatment with EDF/Derotional casting....But ET must be indicated. HRH > Unfortunately EDF casting is not a billable insurance code in the US as of > yet. Hopefully soon it will be. Guest guest
, We just applied to Shriner's Chicago. How long from when you sent in your application until you got your first appointment? I am not good at waiting and while still scared as hell want to get this process started. Good luck with everything and enjoy the water. We are trying to get Kiya as much water time as we possibly can. In a weird twisted way I am actually looking forward to winter and I HATE winter. Guest guest
Hi , We found out about Kaity's Scoli on May 12thI joined this wonderful group and got info for Chicago's care cordinator, Cree. I called her and she told me to fax theApp. to her and immunization records. I did that and as soon asshe got them she scheduled us for the consultation visiton June 2nd. She helped greatly with speeding the process up! We didn't even have to apply online and wait forever to hear back from anyone. I would get ahold with and let her know that you applied, she should be able to speed things up, she's Dr. S's care cordinator. We were very impressed with the Dr and staff at Chicago, the hospital was very nice too. I know what you mean about winter, I feel that way too.It just seems as though it won't be as hard on them in the winter!Wishing you the best of luck! - mommy yo Kaitlyn (13 months) 1st cast August 10th Sent from my iPodOn Jul 27, 2010, at 9:42 AM, "cjustl" <cjustl@...> wrote: , We just applied to Shriner's Chicago.
