Guest guest
Hi everyone, I'm just thinking about my daughter and walking. She's crawling all over the place, and doing well with that. She's pulling herself up on things too. When she holds my fingers, she can walk pretty quickly. But when I try to get her to stand by herself, her balance always seems off, like she's gonna fall forward. Do you think it's bc of her Scoli? or some other delay? She's 12 months...and her curve is at 40*. Does this sound like low muscle tone? P.S. our ped. wants to send us back to genetics to see if her WPW (heart problem she had when she was born - now resolving) - we saw him earlier to see if the WPW was a genetic issue, which he later detirmed wasn't. - and the small Chiari she has, and the scoli. ..some how may be connecting together for another problem or syndrome.. I don't think it's necessary...myself.. Im just becoming frustrated with all these drs. Thx - Mommy to Kaitlyn ( 12 months) 40*
Guest guest
, I would worry about her walking yet. she is still young and its completely normal for a child to learn to walk between 9months-18months. if she is walking while holding onto your finger she will walk in no time. Her balance could be off because of the scoli. If i remenber right she has not been casted yet? if so when she is casted her balance will improve and she will be off in no time. On a Happy note my Son Thaddeus has just figured out how to use his little walker yesterday!!! he will push himself accross the room Backwards. he will ush back a few steps and i would say " Yay way to go " he would stop and clap his hands. i was trying to not cry but even thinking about it makes me tear up it just takes time. soon enough he will be standing up on his own.. cant wait.. Guest guest
Kaitlyn's right on schedule. Most kids start walking after their first birthday. My daughter first walked on her first birthday, my son a couple of weeks before, but my gf kids walked anywhere from 10 months to 18 months, all of which are completely within the normal range, and many kids closer to 2, which is normal for any normal, healthy kid. It seems like they seem like they can but suddenly they are just ready and they suddenly start to walk. My son had a curve around 48 degrees on his first birthday, a very flexible bendy one and he walked just fine. He did take a while to become steady on his feet, which is normal for any kid. I bet she'll walk right on time, scoliosis probably won't affect that, and her muscle tone, normal or low probably won't either. However, as moms know, mom's know their children and mom's intuition is a very important part of mothering. Sounds like you are on track for definitive answers! Guest guest
12 months and already walking holding on to your fingers? I think she's doing awesome. My oldest daughter wasnt walking till she was 19 months. Every child will go their own pace. I did find that my daughter, Hadley who has Scoli did everything any other kids did, but at her own pace. She was actually walking earlier than my oldest daughter. She started at 15 months. It took her a little bit longer to get her balance because of her cast and everytime she got a new cast, she had to figure out her balance again with her new weight, but she got it. I wouldn't have any worries about your daughter not walking yet. 12 months old in a cast walking holding onto things is awesome. Once she's ready and has confidence and her balance, she'll be walking everywhere and then you'll be wanting her to be staying put ;)Let us know how her heart problem is! Guest guest
Thank you Shauna, She does seem detirmend to walk and get where she wants to go. She seemed to be up to speed with other babies her age, through her 1st year. Her brother walked when he was 10 months old, he did everything early...I think sometimes I compare the two...I really shouldnt! I am sorry, I should have been more clear...she's not in her cast yet. We are waiting to be casted on the 10th of August...her 1st one. I'm hoping she can keep her date...she's been sick. :-/ Congrats on your daughter's progress that's exciting to hear! - Mommy to Kaitlyn ( 12 months) *40 1st cast August 10th From: Shauna Rorabeck <srorabeck@...>infantile scoliosis treatment Sent: Wed, July 21, 2010 9:09:52 AMSubject: Re: walking 12 months and already walking holding on to your fingers? Guest guest
Hi I'm no doctor but I think that if your daughter is crawling and pulling up on things and walking holding your finger then she is probably ok. It doesnt sound like low tone to me but again I'm no expert. My son who has low tone was not doing any of those things at 12 months, he barely sat up so I don't think you have much to worry about regarding low tone. Hope that helps some. Guest guest
, What other issues does Kailtyn have? And what docs is she being followed by? Has she been seen by a neurologist? Do they indicate low muscle tone? While I agree with the general sentiment that 12 months is not a time to be overly concerned about whether or not she is walking, I think you are going to have to go with your gut on this one. She is still well within the milestone window. My first walked at 10 months and Makenna didn't walk until she was 19 months, but there was a reason. From our own story, it was Makenna's eye sight that caused the delay in walking. She had double vision. This was repaired with surgery and as soon as she recovered she started walking...we knew her strabismus could be making it hard for her to see, but we had no idea to what extent! Her scoliosis didn't really effect her balance. It was more her gait. She would walk with one foot in front all the time. She always led with her right foot and would 'gallop'. Was told by her neuro that I wasn't 'giving her enough time', that 'she hadn't been walking long enough for it to be a problem'. We hadn't discovered the scoli yet. And he didn't look for it. He reluctantly ordered a second MRI to rule out any neurological cause. While we waited for the results I discovered the scoliosis. That paired with the results of the second MRI led us to her final diagnosis of HGPPS. I would imagine that low tone issues would cause a walking delay, but I am not sure... I don't think you should be overly concerned, but trust your gut and let more people look at her if you feel it will help. Hope this helps! Guest guest
It common for the child with PIS to have difficulty walking prior to cast application. We have all seen sooo many kiddos that really get the hang of it when the cast is on because their spine is better aligned and with that their balance improves greatly. > , > I would worry about her walking yet. she is still young and its completely > normal for a child to learn to walk between 9months-18months. if she is > walking while holding onto your finger she will walk in no time.
