Do you know if Sick Kids has a proper frame (3 dimensional, not Risser)?

Can Sick Kids provide photos & results of other children they have treated

early & successfully?

I would def make the appt. w/ Sick Kids and see to what degree they

measure the RVAD?

Hi thereI am from the Toronto area (30 mins east of Toronto). My son goes to Sick Kids for casting and see's a fantastic doctor. Our experiences have been great, I strongly suggest you check out Toronto. Our son had almost the same curvature as your daughter. He was diagnosed April of last year and went into a cast at 11 months. He will be finished casting next month and the dr. said he see's no scoliosis at all right now so we are soooo pleased and cant wait to go into a brace. He just turned 2 this past weekend and has come so far. Where are you from? LynnFrom: grahamhill@...

Hello everyone and thank you for letting us join this group.

Our daughter Olivia who is now 2 years and 2 months has been diagnosed with IS at Shriners in Philadelphia. We have a 2nd consult at Sick Kids on July 27th, which Shriners encouraged, and we know that shortly after we will start the casting process. Our biggest decision will be where to cast, Shriners or Sick Kids. Our experience at Shriners was fabulous. They are truly a remarkable organiation.

We are hoping that there may be some other people in this group with a similar situation and may also be in the Toronto area and have had casting done at Sick Kids.

Our daughter has a 35-40 degree thoracic curve to the right with an RVAD of 12 degrees.

Look forward to hearing from you

Hi Yep Sick Kids has the 3 dimensional frame and does strictly Mehta casting. After talking with you last year, that was the first thing I asked my doctor and for sure thats what they are doing. ThanksLynnFrom: heather@... <heather@...>Subject: Re: A Call out for Toronto or nearby areainfantile scoliosis treatment Received: Wednesday, July 14, 2010, 9:41 AM

Hi Lynn,

Thanks for much for the reply. We are in the west end of Toronto, so Sick Kids

is definitely the closest location for us. We have been raising concerns about

our daughter's back since she was 14 months old and were told not to worry by

both her paediatrician and an orthopaedic specialist. At her 2 year appointment

it was very evident something was wrong and an x-ray was finally ordered. We

were referred immediately to Sick Kids but didn't hear from them for a month and

then were given an appointment a further month out. In the meantime we decided

to get a consult at Shriner's in Philadelphia where they confirmed her diagnosis

of infantile scoliosis and indicated serial casting was required. Ever since we

returned, we have been trying to find any information that indicated that Sick

Kids did serial casting and what technique. We were really relieved to see

's message confirming that they use the Mehta technique and the 3d table.

We were also reassured to hear that you have had a great experience. Can we ask

a few questions....1.Was it a long time between your consult and first casting

date? 2. Have you had any problems getting timely appointments at Sick Kids? 3.

Does the treating physician do the actual casting? 4. Did they order an MRI and

when was that done?

Thanks! Liz

Make sure to ask the doc direct as its up to him/her and we all know that

just because one does it, doesnt mean their colleagues in the same

hospital do.

Hi Liz

Just like you guys, we were given the wait and see speech, but I knew something was not right and could see the curve worsening withing weeks. My son already had a club foot and was being seen by an ortho in Scarborough (the one who told us to wait and see....) and I basically told her I wanted to be turned over to Sick Kids immediately because I just knew there was more going on. After getting the referal (about a month later), the ortho at sick kids looked at him, xrayed and sure enough was diagnosed with progressive infantile scoliosis. He then said he needed to be casted right away. We got the diagnosis in April and the doctor then ordered an MRI and once that came back we got the first cast at the beginning of June. So there was only about a 2 month wait time for it all to come together. Now we go every 2 months (on the dot) for cast changes and the treating doctor does

all the cast changes. Our experience has been good, and the doc. talks to us in depth before and after each cast so we get all our questions answered. Let me know if you have any more questions or would like more info. I can also give you my number if you want to talk on the phone.
