I totally agree! I tell WW members there are no "bad" foods or foods you "can't" eat. Some foods are more helpful and others are less helpful in creating and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Choosing more of the helpful ones is our goal, but no one has to leave their favorite treats at the door (unless they're dropping them off for me, that is)!

Sounds like DH is getting it together, Donna! That is awesome!!

Your husband sounds kind of like mine Donna. Like you I am cautiously optimistic, but he has been at it for 8 months now and is still slowly losing. The best thing we can continue to do is be encouraging and set a good example I think.

Donna-

Yes that is exactly what mine has done in the past too. Kind of followed a fad diet of some sort. Now he is doing the same thing as yours. Eating everything but in moderation. He was at 283 when he started and is now in the high 240's. He is thrilled and HE is having fun shopping:-) It is really cute, and I can tell he feels really good about it. The best thing is his blood pressure has gone down. I am glad it is working so well for both of them this time:-)

I'm glad you like that! I find it too judgmental to call foods "bad" or "good" because what does that mean about me if I eat "bad" foods? I am either helping myself achieve my goals or not and some days are more helpful than others! ;-)

Oh, yes that is fabulous !  My husband is also thrilled with himself, and I am so proud.  He checks himself out often (which I think is great!), and he actually cares what clothes he wears.  We've been together nearly roughly 15 years and never has he cared what he looked like as much as  now :)

When men get this, they really seem to get it...

A really neat guy in one of my meetings got it... he was losing weight steadily at a good rate (about 1-2 pounds a week) and when asked how he was so successful he'd always say "It's easy, I just eat half of what I used to eat, and I'm still quite satisfied, then I stop eating." He said he could still have snacks when he felt like he wanted one because his portions were so appropriate. He was eating much healthier foods and his doctor had taken him off cholesterol, diabetes & high blood pressure meds. He was very close to goal, having lost probably 30 pounds already, when I stopped doing that meeting to take one closer to my home.

I wonder if it is b/c men don't seem to have the same emotional attachment to food as women? Although, my DH is a big foodie and I do think it is hard for him to control his portions - he just likes to eat - but I don't think it is "emotional" as in he'll eat if stressed, angry, upset, depressed, etc. I think it is more like he just loves the taste of food and everything to do w/ food (he cooks a lot as well! YUM!)

That is a really good point. You are right. It makes a lot of sense. He is a foodie too, and portion control really plays a part. He loves his crunchy snacks the most. He will say I just had a "few" chips and half the bag is gone lol. I think having one or two days a week where he still eats like that helps him stay with it too. I know it does for me. We love to cook and share the cooking and he makes some REALLY delicious meals too. :-) I am just happy to have him doing so well. I am madly in love with the guy and want him around for a very long time!!:-)

Hi ,

My DH has "cheat" days, too. I do think it helps - and even his "cheat" days aren't as bad as what his "regular" days used to be. He is doing really well, I think he is down 25 lbs since April. I hope he keeps it up. He wouldn't tell me where he was when he started (he was afraid my head would explode! :) But, I suspect he was up around where your DH was. He is a big guy, and I don't anticipate that he will ever get under 220-230, though. But, that is way better than where he was, and everyone has different builds/body types.

Take care,

Donna

Cheat days are important in any meal plan. A cheat helps you cope

psychologically with the changes you are making and it can keep the body from

going into starvation mode.

My cheat day--when I'm eating like I should--is Sunday, which is when there are

absolutely no rules on what I eat. Mmmmm....is it Sunday yet?

Yes, my husband is a big guy too. A little over 6'2". Honestly about 20 more pounds lost and he would be in a really good range for him. If he gets to 200 or a little below he looks too skinny. He is very large boned too.

I am just glad they are both doing so well!:-)
