On our first cast at SLC we had to stay the night before in the hospital (only

one parent is allowed to stay with child being casted) - is your husband or

someone else going with you to help care for your son? Hoping the fever and

runny nose are resolved - they are having a Pertussis (Whooping Cough) epidemic

in California, not sure where you live, but with her being only 14 months not

sure if she has had all the vaccinations to keep her completely protected from

this.

There is a really nice park down the street from Shriner's and a zoo close by.

You will love the doctors and staff -

Wishing you all the best next week.

Congratulations on 's MRI! There are a lot of toys and things to play with in the big playroom for your son. Whether or not you'll have a private hospital room seems to depend on how busy there are that day. We've had both private and shared, and only one parent can stay overnight.

I would not worry about a little runny nose yet, I would only call or cancel if my child was sick right before travelling. So far, we have gotten lucky every time- knock wood. They will check for clear lungs on casting day and they are conservative, so they will not cast if there is any risk. For us, that continuous correction and especially getting in the first cast was so important, we just try to keep our kiddo away from anyone coughing or with a runny nose the 5-7 days before, and stay away from indoor playrooms with other kids- sticking to home and the park. Lots of anti-bacterial wipes and hand gel! : )

So 's MRI was a success on Tuesday, we sent a copy overnight to SLC and received confirmation that we could move forward with our first casting of 6/29. I can't believe it's come up so quickly and I am feeling nervous, excited, hopeful, sad and grateful for the opportunity all at the same time. Reading some of the recent posts of first casting experiences has been extremely helpful with having realistic expectations, so thank you for sharing.

,

You will LOVE the staff there in Salt Lake!! We were there for Eli's second

cast last week. Eli had a great time running through the halls! The nurses and

the child life specialist are great! Not to mention the OR staff and Doc's that

will be loving on !

We have had little episodes with Running noses, low grade temps and things the

week before surgery. The day of Eli has been clear and ready to go. SHOO-WEE!!

What color cast is getting??
