Thanks Ralph. What a wonderful young athlete...a perfect example of why I

coach, the opportunity to work with young people like Meghan Vogel.

Thanks Ralph. What a wonderful young athlete...a perfect example of why I

For years I've hosted a track invitational in Lisle that at its high point

had fifty-eight schools. One of my greatest moments as a coach happened

in this meet. Several years ago, young man with cerebral palsy was running

the first section of the 3200. His goal, as I noted in my announcement to

the athletes and fans, was to run a career best in this, the last race of

his high school career.

What happened next was simply unbelievable. On every lap, athletes

competing in the field events stopped what they were doing, lined the outside

of

the track and cheered for him. Triple jumpers on the south side of our

track would gather outside of lane eight. When he passed them, the long

jumpers on the southeast side did the same, the shot putters followed suit.

When he got to the north side D area, the high jumpers also did the same. On

the home stretch, everyone in the stands stood up. Officials in the field

events just let it go on. They too were caught up in the moment. They did

this for all eight laps.

I've witnessed lots of good things in track and field over the past

thirty-seven years. But this is one I'll never forget. He PR'd by over twenty

seconds. At the end of the race, he came over to his mom and grandma, who

were standing along the fence, probably thinking they were going to be his

only cheering section. Little did they know they were about to witness a

truly amazing display of brotherhood.

It just doesn't get any better than this.
