Guest guest
Joyce, there certainly is a high correlation between PA, anxiety and depression. In my case the generalized, non-situational anxiety bothered me mainly at night and would wake me up from a sound sleep. It came under much better control after starting Spiro and adhering to the Dash diet. Then recently it came back like gangbusters for about a month. My Nephrologist gave me a prescription for Xanax and it got me through that very difficult month. I personally cannot take it during the day, nor did I need to, but it helped me sleep at night. Then the anxiety lessened as quickly as it came on. Now I no longer take it, but know that if it comes back I can get through with it.It's a mystery to me why it suddenly returned and why it suddenly lessened. I'm beginning to think it may never be really gone, just have it's ups and downs. My BP remained in the 130/70 range and I was not eating high sodium. Perhaps other dietary factors? Just don't know.Depression is the same. Normally (whatever that means anymore) I have not had a depressive personality, but it can come on suddenly and disappear just as suddenly, lasting a few hours or a couple of days. The only food thing that I'm beginning to wonder about is chocolate/sugar since one episode came on after eating a piece of chocolate cake at a birthday party. I'm going to start watching my diet in relation to both anxiety and depression because being on medications for them does not appeal to me at all.Dianne - F-69, bi-lateral adenomas, CKD (at least partially from contrast dye used during CT scans), 50mg Spiro, 25mg Atenolol (which I'm going to cut to 12.5mg because BB's can caused depression), Dashing. I've been reading about the high correlation between PA and anxiety (particularly Generalized Anxiety Disorder) and depression. I've had GAD since childhood, but it has been in remission for many years - until after left adrenalectomy in April 2012. Remaining gland tested high aldo post surg even though AVS showed it was "normal." In addition to anxiety and agitation (which calmed down a lot when started on Spiro) have noticed some depression. Any ideas about good anti-depressant/anti-anxiety meds for PA patients? SSRI's vs SNRI's? I will appreciate any feedback.

Guest guest
Thank you Francis. I'm going to keep this in mind. Since I have kidney damage and too much K is not good for that I walk a fine line between enough K to keep my symptoms at bay and not too much. Come to think of it, I had my serum K measured right at that time and it was the lowest it's been, 4.6, for some time. I had been 5.1 to 5.3 when on 75mg of Spiro. At the time I attributed it to the fact that I made them use the largest needle they had (19) and find a fast draw. Usually they used a tiny needle in the back of the hand and it came out slow because I'm harder to get blood out of than a turnip. Thanks, I hadn't thought of that. Guest guest
Dianne, my anxiety dramatically improved after I started on magnesium in addition to the potassium. I felt much better when my K was finally regulated and my BP was done, but the anxiety was still a little there. And I can't recall exactly, but I think I got the idea from someone on this list about losing mag too, and since mag is related to anxiety, I went on it and it helped noticeably. I have found that some things seem like they may worsen a low mag, like when I take some pepcid alot for heartburn, or when I don't dash well. But I take it. REALLY improved my sleep I noticed. Just a thought. This may not be anxiety but a SX of low K.> > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Â > > > > > > > > > > I've been reading about the high correlation between PA and anxiety (particularly Generalized Anxiety Disorder) and depression. Guest guest
And a good thought it is too . I do take a magnesium pill about once a week, mostly because I noticed that back when my BP was so very high, before my PA diagnosis and Spiro, it would go even higher if I didn't take a daily magnesium pill. After Spiro I didn't feel like I probably needed extra magnesium, but then noticed that if I did take one at least once a week I felt better. Perhaps I need to up that to 2 or 3 times a week, or should it be daily? I have 400mg soft gel tabs.If Tums, like Pepcid, lower magnesium, then I should definitely take the mag pills. The LS V-8 tends to give me heartburn, so I take a Tums along with it.It seems like anytime we take any med we have to take something else to counteract the side affects. That is a downward spiral for sure.
