Hi Trish-

Wow, first let me say, you are very honest and very self aware. I think beating any issue whether it is weight or anything else we struggle with the first thing we need to do is really get in touch with ourselves and get to the root of the problem. It sounds like you have paid a lot of attention to your weight issues and really have a grasp as far as what is causing them. That is a huge first step, so that is great. Congratulations on quitting the cigarettes too.

As far as where to start, that is so individual. Getting into a good routine like you had with gardening, but probably with better eating habits is a fantastic place to start:-) What works for some people might not work for others so it is kind of trial and error. I would suggest getting a good physical first, to see if any hormonal balances are triggering some of your issues. Then possibly try Weight Watchers or something similar where you have the camaraderie and accountability until you feel confident to do it on your own.

You sound like you are in a really good place as far as wanting fitness really bad right now. I would say strike while the iron is hot. If you prefer to go it on your own, pick a certain amount of calories to start with. The rule of thumb is say if you weigh 130 eat 1300 to maintain; that is without exercising though. You can tweak it as you go along. Drop the sugar too, if you can because that just becomes a vicious cycle. It is another addiction. I love sugar too, so I really get that. I allow myself some every day but only AFTER a good workout when I won't get the blood sugar spikes.

I lost 45 pounds about 5 years ago and have been able to keep it off by keeping a food diary and exercising regularly. I eat lots of fresh fruits and veggies, and give myself one or two days a week to eat whatever I want. This has worked for me and now my husband is doing it and has lost over 35 pounds. It honestly hasn't been that hard and it paid off pretty quick for both of us.

Hope this helps:-)

Hi Trisha,

First, let me say welcome. I'm and I am a Weight Watchers leader and receptionist so you know now that I am obviously biased toward WW when it comes to weight loss and weight maintenance. I lost 25 pounds on the program 3 years ago and countless other pounds in my other attempts to lose weight and keep it off. This time it IS for life. At my heaviest, I was at least 50 pounds heavier than I am now. I chose WW because it offers a comprehensive program that helps you learn healthy habits and attitudes toward food, exercise and yourself too. It is a lifestyle approach that takes in food, exercise, habits and attitudes. It is not a quick fix, but it works. Okay, WW commercial over.

Congratulations on taking the first step... it is very difficult to admit you have a problem and even more difficult to really commit yourself to working on it. A couple of things strike me immediately about your post and if this is too personal or if I'm way off base please do not feel like you have to post anything back but... first, and this is NOT a judgement in any way, you've done some very extreme dieting and may have damaged your body in important ways that could interfere with weight loss efforts but more importantly, may impair your general health. I suggest that you get a complete physical and see where you stand. A doctor might be able to guide and/or oversee your weight loss program too. Another thing that I see is that your behaviors sound very extreme, possibly obsessive or compulsive or both. I know nothing about you beyond what you've written in this post and I know nothing about obsessive compulsive disorder and am not suggesting that I do but to be very honest with you, as you have certainly been with us, I want to also suggest you consider some kind of psychological counseling along with a structured weight loss program that offers in person support (like WW). It sounds like, only from what you've written, that your issues go quite deep and a weight loss program is not going to work unless you can make some very big and possibly very difficult behavior and attitude (toward food, toward how you comfort yourself, how you take care of yourself, etc.) changes and I am wondering if you can do that without help. MANY people can't but they don't have the interest in digging deeper and really making the lasting changes and so they work at whatever program for a while, get bored or don't get fast enough results, give up and do the same things over and over again. You sound like you might be at a point where you might consider the extra help so that is why I'm going out on a major limb to suggest it. I pray I am not insulting you in anyway at all. Here's more of why I'm saying what I am. You sound like your basic mode of operation is to get to the point of desperation and then take extreme measures to get rid of that which is causing the discomfort. If you can find out why you behave that way and can reprogram that thinking/feeling/attitude/response/whatever is driving the behavior then I would be willing to bet you'd also get a huge handle on your weight issues and that you'd be much more successful than if you try to do it without making that change too. Weight loss programs, like WW, can help you to a great degree, especially if you do it in a group support program (like WW) but I have a feeling that you would be even more successful with the extra help from a trained counselor. Again, I am NOT judging you in any way at all. You have tremendous courage to post what you did here and I respect that and I respect YOU tremendously for it. I hope I have not offended you in any way, please do not feel like you have to respond to anything too personal!

I also need to make some comments on some of the other things you wrote, some corrections for your sake and anyone else reading this... first of all, dieting and dietary changes do not shrink your stomach. Many Americans suffer from "portion distortion" and eat WAY more than what their body really needs to use for fuel so the extra gets stored as fat. When you start eating more appropriate portions you start to realize that your body feels just great (even better really) with less food than what you were used to (and you lose weight as a result too). 2nd point: most people will eventually stop losing weight with starvation dieting. The reason for that is that your metabolism slows down in response to your body's not getting the fuel it needs. Your body will also start to consume your muscle if it does not have fat or food and that is not good at all! I would bet that your metabolism is probably messed up due to the extremes you've done but, that can be easily undone with a healthier eating and exercise program. Next, sweating does not equal weight loss. It is your body's way of cooling itself down when it is too hot. You might lose some water weight but you need to replace that water for your body systems to be healthy. Please, do not EVER deprive yourself of water (or food for that matter) to lose weight. Any weight you do lose will be very temporary as you will gain it back when you eat or drink in your more normal way again. Last, any exercise is going to burn calories. The key is to burn more than you take in with food. Eating a healthy, balanced diet and including moderate, regular exercise will improve your health and make weight loss easier to attain and maintain too. Make sure any weight loss program you choose to follow includes both a healthy diet that you can live with for the rest of your life and insists on exercise as being part of a healthy lifestyle. A weight loss program that includes accountability and group support may be even more helpful for you, as it is for many people.

I truly wish you all the best. We're not medical people here but we are exercise video fanatics. If you want suggestions for great videos to try, tell us what kinds of things you like and what your fitness level is for cardio, weights and flexibility and we can definitely help you out a lot with that. I hope you feel welcome and in no way picked apart, I hope you'll post workouts you do and share your progress towards your personal goals. This is a fabulous, supportive group and I'm glad you've joined us!

hi i'm new and i have questions

hi everyone,i'm trisha, i'm newer to the group, and have questions. this may be a little lengthy, sorry. and for like the first time i am going to be extremely honest. i am a teachers aid am my local elemaentary school. i am a very superficial person, weight is a huge huge thing for me. i have always been the bigger sister, that i'm ok with only because i am forced to because it's reality. i am a stress eater and my life is packed full of stress, which i am sure only half of it justified the rest i bring on myself but ne way 2 years ago i got HUGE really close to 200lbs. i typically run 130-140lbs. when it really hit me how big i was size 18 in womens i "woke up". something had to give there. Luckily for me i found gardening and forced myself to do that. I forced myself to wake up every morning and spend the whole day out side only coming when i needed a drink or to take care of something for my son. i rarely ate if at all, i was active, sweating, and the weigh was melting off with the sweat it was great i was below my target weight in no time. I KNOW I KNOW that's extremely dangerous unhealthy, and what but it's what i have always done when i needed weight off. not eating works everyone says oh u gain weight doing that but i don't i lose weight. it shrinks my stomach, i eat less, i weight less. i don't know how else to shink my actual stomach that's why i do it this way. everything was going get until last winter my asthma (from cigarette smoking) got really bad i couldn't sleep or breath by may i had enough and decided to quit smoking i did it in 3 wks (with the help of these wonderful little pills) no problems except the OVERWHELMING cravings for salt and sugar, and for some reason i just can't ever get enough to eat. i've gined 15lbs since may. this is when i relized how much i depended on the cigarettes. before may if i felt the need to eat something i'd smoke instead. i can't do that now. i was walking ALL the time if i felt that nag to eat something i'd leash up my yorkies lace my sneakers and pound the pavement. but to many thing interfear with that now so i can't just go walking or running ne more.i tried mints at first that worked at 1st but now i am eating 5 packs of tic tacs and 2 can of Altoids a day. all summer i have worked out with my 2 dvds and whatever on fit tv but it's not working. i love pilates btw and i do them as often as i can. i could do it all day but it's not working! i don't know what to do to make myself full or to curb the cravings. i am lost here.i have never been a calorie counter it always seemed to much work to me, but i think i may have to start i don't know how to do that either i guess. i don't know how many calories i should have, what the difference between energy making calories vs, fat calorie or which ones to avoid. starches and carbs, sat fats, any of it's all foreign to me. also i don't know what exersices and routines burn how many calories.can anyone help me PLEASE!thanks trish

thanks nancy fr the great welcome, do not feel at all like u insulted or offended me in anyway. ur feed was was really great. and i know it's hard to try to help me when u really know nothing about me. and i want to say i really didn't mean to get so deep into my issues, thats a bad habit, i tend to over do it when writing. i'm sorry everyone, and DO NOT feel like u have to read my crazyness below!weight programs cost money and i don't have it to spare (a huge part of my stress). i have spoken with my doctor and i get regular physicals other then the asthma, weak ankles and clicky knees i'm am in good health and i know how to handle those things i never push harder then i know i can handle. thus far none of my weight lose measures have not done any damage. my doctor doesn't seem to

think there is anything wrong with weighting 173lbs at my height 5'10". (NO OFFENCE TO ANY ONE I SWEAR!!!!!!!!) but... she is a large woman that always has a donut or milk shake in her hand when i see he in the hall ways of her office. she's ok with that and i am not. there is more to life then food! OCD oh yeah bigggg time i have so many it's stupid, but that's me. i started getting psychological help at 6 when my parents who had been apart for as long as i could remember finally got a divorce. i have spent my wholelife being treated for the wrong mental issues and no one want to listen to me when i say no that's not what making me mad it's this. anyway i know why i am the way i am, why i feel the way i do about my weight no one has every told me i looked pretty or skinny. those r not words i hear but all the women and girls around me hear it and in front of me most of the time. people have no problem telling jane there she's gorgeous and then

turning to say hi to me. i am used to it but i don't have to like it. i want to change it and in order to change it i have to change the way i look. after last summer wheni last all the weight and i went back to work and everyone was like wow and all that i felt great better then ever in my life and didn't want it to end. OCD yes absolutely. no matter what changes i make in my life,i can move away far away and start all over i've done it before.it didn't help it didn't stop the insecurities. my psychologist and i have worked at it all my life and even he is starting to realize that part of me will never change, i will always feel that way it's how i have been trained or programmed to feel. i can get past that i can. that is getting into info i am sure no one cares about and i am rambling again so back to the point. i do want to clarify a few things i said i realize now i was typing fast and rambling here and there and some things i said may

not have be clear. the gardening things was a wway to keep me constatntly busy and my mind OFF food, just typing it and read it is makeing me want a big fat cheeseburger and fries, ne way that's what i mean not that i don't have smoking to do in place of eating everytime i don't have anything to do i don't know what to so. the bad weather killed hundreds of my plants so my gardening tkes only minutes a day leaving me idle. i do not believe that sweating loses weight i was more using it as a metaphore or whatever it's called i was losing the weight that fast. my dr told me the same thing about the stomach not shrinking or expanding. i guess thats just how i feel about it in this current state i can eat a supersized big mac meal and still be hungry. last summer a cheeseburger and small frie stuffed me because i so rarely ate that i "trained" my stomach to "think" that much food is sufficent. through out the school year i untrained my stomach and i over

eat. i know that. i don't know how to stop however.i have tried the diets that the doctors, and nutricianists have planned for me following the exercise routines and what and never feel like i get any where, a year after starting a program i'm lucky if i've lost one pound. i've done the tiny meals through out the day yeah i can'''t do tiny. i o sticck things out until finally enough money and time is wasted and i am forced to say it's not working. i agree i need some kind of support system, but those ppl are not around me it is my expirence that they have to be bought (meaning a weight lose group like ww) i know this is just an exercise video group but i always see u guys talking about claories burned and updates and things and thought maybe someone could help me understand the calorie thing. i really didn't mean to get so deep into my issues bad habit, i tend to over do it when writing. i'm sorry everyone. i think i made a mistake

writing here. i will continue to read and reply to things i feel i should but i think i'm barking up the wrong tree here and i wasn't thinking when i posted. so please forgive me and thanks for all ur help nancy. hi everyone,i'm trisha, i'm newer to the group, and have questions. this may be a little lengthy, sorry. and for like the first time i am going to be extremely honest. i am a teachers aid am my local elemaentary school. i am a very superficial person, weight is a huge huge thing for me. i have always been the bigger sister, that i'm ok with only because i am forced to because it's reality. i am a stress eater and my life is packed full of stress, which i am sure only half of it justified the rest i bring on myself but ne way 2 years ago i got HUGE really close to 200lbs. i typically run 130-140lbs. when it really hit me how big i was size 18 in womens i "woke up". something had to give there.

TrishaFrom: "nancydewolf@..." <nancydewolf@...> Sent: Friday, July 24, 2009 5:42:03 PMSubject: Re: hi i'm new and i have questions

If you can find out why you behave that way and can reprogram that thinking/feeling/ attitude/ response/ whatever is driving the behavior then I would be willing to bet you'd also get a huge handle on your weight issues and that you'd be much more successful than if you try to do it without making that change too.

This is a fabulous, supportive group and I'm glad you've joined us!

thanks denise, u have been alot of positive help. i have a better idea of the where to start with the calories now. i am a very analitical person i know that isn't a word but that's me i analyze everything to death it absolutely drives my boyfriend up the wall but i can't help it. i know the root of my problem and i try to keep them in check this summer i lost that grasp when focusing so much on not smoking. i knw i say that alot but, if u were never a smoker u could never understand and if u are or were then maybe u will but i was EXTREMELY dependent on cigarettes for a lot of thing in many ways they were my bff's, my therapy, my everything.but any way i know where to start. i got a notebook out this morning to start jounaling things so i could see if i could pinpoint when and what was

causing my over eating and other issues so it's awesome that u suggested that. i was looking online and found a site that listed like EVERY food and their calories and good food energy calories and fat calories, which ones should i be keeping track of?

Hi Trisha,

I'm glad to hear I didn't cause any offense. I only have a few minutes but wanted to note that according to the WW healthy weight table you are within what we would consider a healthy weight (someone your height should weigh between 139 and 174). That said, some people are better suited towards the high end of their healthy weight range and some are healthier and happier towards the bottom. We allow people to join who are within their healthy weight range as long as they have at least 5 pounds to lose before they get to the bottom of the range. (They can also join with a doctor's note saying what their goal weight should be if it is above or below our range.)

I'm not sure what to say to the rest of your post. It looks like you've got your mind made up about what you can and can't do to change your situation. Not much anyone can do to help in that case to be honest.

We talk about calories burned in terms of how many our heart rate monitors tell us we burned (those of us that use them which definitely isn't everyone either). We do talk about food and weight loss and weight maintenance some and we talk about our lives, along with (especially) the workouts we do and what we like or don't like about them and if we recommend them or not and who we recommend them for, etc. I hope that helps!

Tracking food intake is tremendously helpful. Track EVERY food. If you're counting calories, count them ALL! Some people here can recommend useful sites with free food journals & calorie counters. It's the ones you don't count that tend to multiply & divide all over your body! ;-)

Tracking food intake is tremendously helpful. Track EVERY food. If you're counting calories, count them ALL! Some people here can recommend useful sites with free food journals & calorie counters. It's the ones you don't count that tend to multiply & divide all over your body! ;-)

nancyit takes ALOT more then what u said to offend me! don't worry ur self bout that.and i relize now after reading this that i sound stubborn and bull headed, not my intention honestly. i guess i am just at a lose on making changes for the better and i have really i have but i just haven't manaaged to find the right change to maintain the weight. i am TOTALLY OPEN to suggestions. as i mentioned stress is a big down fall for me and so i started a 30-60 min "meditation\relaxing\calming" whatever u wanna call it period everyday. in the beginning it was just in the eves to wind down so i could sleep better. it worked last week i added 15 min first thing int he mmorning to kinda program myself for the day. and then like yesterday was a bad day and when i thought for sure i was bout to

lose it i went to my comfy spot turned my ipod on the relaxing song i like and went through to 2 breathing cycles. the anxiety attack ceased and i could breath again. so i TOTALLY reccommend doing this to like everyone even if u know how t o handle stress and things it's a great way to unwind at the end of the day.and my doctor told me that i am at a good normal weight but i am not happy with it i prefer the lower end of that scale. i'm not like those poor girls who feel u should see their bones, really i like curves! just not he lumpy ones i got. doing all the unhealthy bad things worked that's why i did them but i'm too old to be doing those things now. it's silly and stupid and i'm trying to do this right, but i don't know how u give me a plan with rules and i'm on it i can do all will be well. make me figure this out on my own and it may not happen. i have to have boundries. and i needed a starting point. the journal and calorie countiing

are a great start i can build from that.now this heart rate monitor u speak of intrigues me please tell me more. i have tons of pedometers and after a few days i realize they tell me nothing. they are not very accurate (but i still use mine) so what if i took10000 steps today. that's all i know, i don't know the calories burned, distance traveled nothing. this maybe what i need. and again i have to apologize for saying everyone, i didn't truely mean EVERYONE but many of u, the ones i hear most from speak of the calories burned related info and i was clueless on how u knew i kept thinking "was there some kind of chart, or what" so thank u for tell me. and i'd love to know more about the monitors. u have been alot of help and i am very gratful to u and denise and anyone else who replies. i'd still be lost without u! have a great night everyone!TrishaFrom: "nancydewolf@..." <nancydewolf@...> Sent: Friday, July 24, 2009 8:15:58 PMSubject: Re: hi i'm new and i have questions

I hope that helps!

hi i'm new and i have questions

hi everyone,i'm trisha, i'm newer to the group, and have questions. this may be a little lengthy, sorry. and for like the first time i am going to be extremely honest. i am a teachers aid am my local elemaentary school. i am a very superficial person, weight is a huge huge thing for me. i have always been the bigger sister, that i'm ok with only because i am forced to because it's reality. i am a stress eater and my life is packed full of stress, which i am sure only half of it justified the rest i bring on myself but ne way 2 years ago i got HUGE really close to 200lbs. i typically run 130-140lbs. when it really hit me how big i was size 18 in womens i "woke up". something had to give there.

My heart rate monitor is a Polar F6. I use it to see how many calories I've burned and use it for cardio endurance training. It is set with my range for cardio training and I keep an eye on it as I do cardio workout, trying to stay within my target heart rate zone. My pedometer is a Omron, can't remember the model # but it is very accurate, measures steps and converts it to miles. A pedometer cannot tell you calories burned though.

hi trisha!! i would like to make a few comments to your post...

please know that im writing from my own experience on these

issues and i hope that something i write may be helpful to you...

- smoking cigs increase your metabolism and when you quit

smoking, you will probably experience a slowness in your

metabolism (the speed at which your body uses calories consumed).

this is normal and frustrating and will pass as your body

adjusts... it takes time and patience.

- you may want to ask your dr about the side effects of your

asthma meds... one of them might be contributing to weight gain,

or to a reluctance to lose weight.

- you may want to ask your dr if your asthma meds are increasing

the presence of yeast/candida in your body. a yeast overgrowth

will produce an uncontrollable desire for sugar.

- doing pilates for exercise is great... but it wont make you

lose weight on its own as pilates does not normally burn many

calories. what burns the most? cardio... walking, running,

anything that gets your heart pounding and you breathing fast.

what also burns alot of calories? creating muscle on your

body through strength training. just basic exercises like

squats, lunges, bicep curls, shoulder raises, etc... with a full

water bottle in each hand will do for a start. muscle consumes

calories just to exist because it is active, living tissue.

unlike fat which just sits there and does nothing. as a group,

im sure we can help you with an exercise program to start out

with, along with some workout video recommendations.

- be mindful to properly fuel your exercise. if you dont eat

properly, you wont be able to exercise properly, and you will not

lose weight. if you starve yourself, your body will slow your

metabolism even more. this is not what you want to accomplish.

you want to increase your metabolism through eating properly

and exercising.

- to help yourself feel full so that you do not binge on food,

drink alot of water, all day long. binge on water instead of food.

- there are a few easy ways to adjust your food intake and

produce weight loss.... one is to continue to eat what you want

(but please do try to pick healthy foods like fruits, veggies,

low fat dairy, low fat meat and whole grains) and cut your

portions right in half. if you pick a healthy food, then you

can have a full normal serving.

- another is to journal every single thing that you eat and drink

(no matter what it is, no cheating!) for a week. review your

journal to see what you can easily do without each day. for

example, one might want to eat a bowl of ice cream every evening

for a treat. cut that out and save, like, 250 calories which

equals half a pound of weight lost a week (as long as one doesnt

replace that decrease with some other fattening food). combine

this tactic with exercise that burns 250 calories a day and end

up with a total of 3500 calories which equals one pound of weight

lost per week.

hi trisha!! i would like to make a few comments to your post...

please know that im writing from my own experience on these

issues and i hope that something i write may be helpful to you...

- doing pilates for exercise is great... but it wont make you

lose weight on its own as pilates does not normally burn many

calories. what burns the most? cardio... walking, running,

anything that gets your heart pounding and you breathing fast.

what also burns alot of calories? creating muscle on your

body through strength training. just basic exercises like

squats, lunges, bicep curls, shoulder raises, etc... with a full

Hi Trisha-

I am glad you got a journal and already started working on that. I think it will really help. It should be a good place to start. I use The Calorie King's books. They have a GREAT calorie counter ( after a while you will memorize it:-) and a companion food diary that walks you through what to keep track of - calories burned etc.. They are great and they update the calorie counter once a year to include restaurants too. I have used them for years now.

No I haven't ever been a smoker so I can't completely identify with that. I have heard so many people say what you said though - that it is so hard to quit and that they depended on them for so much. I think it is huge that you were able to quit. That is a great accomplishment.

Your positive attitude about getting fit will get you far. There is so much wonderful support in this group. You came to a really good place:-)

It is amazing and pretty scary the number that sugar can do on your body. I had some health issues a couple of years ago that made me re-think some of my eating habits.. It was a real eye opener to me. I started paying attention to all the damage that sugar can do and made some changes. A good book that really helped is Magic Foods for Better Blood Sugar. There are a lot of really good and EASY to follow books out there that can help with that. And they talk about yeast growth in your body and how that affects you. ANYTHING by Don Colbert I would highly recommend too. His books are very informative and easy to follow also.

You will do great with this!
