Guest guest
You often hear RDI in the same sentence as Gutstein. Here's his website. http://www.connectionscenter.com/RDI/default.asp Re: RDI > WHAT IS RDI? .thank you I am a grandparent and want to help my grandson any > way I can... > God bless > > >
Guest guest
I read " Solving the relationship puzzle " (the main book by Gutstien) about 4 months into beginning my son's ABA program (when he was 3 1/2 years) as part of my research into childhood development. I was impressed with his breakdown of beginning stages of a child's emotional development though I wasn't impressed with the lack of research support his specific methods. So. .. . I incorporated aspects of RDI into my hours of working with my son at home in an ABA format. For example, Gutstien observed that children make eye contact more easily when they are up higher than you, like on a table or a bunk bed. I used this by putting my son on the top bunk and playing catch with him, heavily reinforcing eye contact and continued play. I found that he DID make better eye contact when up high. I also used Gutstien's understanding of joint attention as a background to develop his home programs for Natural Environment Teaching. In California school RDI is frequently used with ABA. I strongly urge parents to read any and all books on normal childhood development--especially if using an ABA program. It's difficult to find an ABA therapist/BCBA who incorporate many developmental appropriate goals into the programing. (ex. pouring, telling stories etc.) Most local programming tends to be overly academic. Being aware of normal childhood development helps you to remember that, oh, he may be acting up because he's getting his three year molars, or (for older kids) losing teeth, etc. Hope this helps. RDI I am new to the group and have a three year old with autism. I would appreciate information regarding RDI. Has anyone in the group tried RDI or is currently in the program? Does anyone combine RDI with ABA or VB? Thanks, Margaret

Guest guest
Dianne, Hi, Lee is an excellent resource about RDI. I am sure she would answer any questions you have about RDI. She just recently completed RDI Certification. Her website is at http://www.FirstYearsInterventions.com/ She also does a website with me at http://www.AutismTreatment.info Just my impressions from reading..... It is very effective in teaching social skills, but is not used widely only because it is a newer form of treatment with fewer people trained in how to do it. It is not considered ABA, but nevertheless a valuable form of treatment for children with certain deficits. I am sure will provide more and better info. J. Guest guest
> > Has anyone had success with their school system paying for RDI? Most school systems, parents, and professionals probably don't even know what Relationship Development Intervetnion (RDI)is. Most people that I talk to have never even heard of it. I doubt that any school in Georgia has even been approached about paying or even providing RDI. If you are going to approach them, you may want to begin by showing them The Connections Center research that they have recently published. www.rdiconnect.com Shauna Hazlitt, M.Ed. Guest guest
Tami, I just joined a parent group for RDI - we are all considering trying it. I am about 1/2 way through the intro book too - excellent, but really tough reading... Anyway, I agree, it sounds great and I have tried a few very tentative things with my son that have been wonderful so far. I am looking forward to learning more! Guest guest
Hi Tami, We are currently doing RDI. We have been doing RDI for about a year. We have mostly been doing RDI lifestyle changes. Lab time has been a bit elusive. I'm getting ready to look for a consultant, so that we can get some help implementing Lab time at home. I really love the philosophy behind it and saw improvement within weeks of starting it. If you want more information I would start with the two books Dr. Gutstein has authored. I wish I could tell you the whole titles, but one is " Solving the Relationship Puzzle. " They are both on the site you've listed. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Thanks all for your contact details and willingness to share (offline). I will try to read up the 2 books that have just arrived. A few initial questions though... How many hours do you all do? Do you use anyone outside the family to relief you? What are some of the RDI activities (suggestions)for eye contact? Thanks, candice > > > > > > Hi all, > > > > > > I am currently looking into RDI(Relationship Development Intervention) > > for my son and it is a little blurred at the moment. Guest guest
Hi Our son's ADOS score has gone from 19 (out of 22, v high) to 12 (the cut off for autism is 10) in the 18 months we have been doing RDI properly with him. We were doing RDI prior to the 18 month period but we hadnt got the mentor/apprentice relationship in place (due to major oppositional and verbally controlling behaviour on his part). Once we cracked that, things really took off. Re your questions - there are no exercises that 'work on eye contact'. The eye contact evolves naturally as parent and child begin to communicate better and the child is supported to use non-verbal communication to inform their thinking (which is what non autistic people do without thinking about it).....this includes reading facial expression, which involves more eye contact. Re hours - it is a lifestyle rather than a series of activities, so you change your communication style and use it throughout the day. You can do practically anything in an RDI way. Would suggest you talk to an RDI Consultant and/or join the RDI-UK group RDI-UK/ Several Consultants post on that list so you have plenty of opportunities to get info from both other parents and Consultants. Cheers Zoe > > > > > > > > Hi all, > > > > > > > > I am currently looking into RDI(Relationship Development Intervention) > > > for my son and it is a little blurred at the moment. Guest guest
Hi , I think it's one of the best therapies I've tried. My son non-verbal until 4 years (now 10), self injurious and riddled with obsessional tendancies was in his first school concert last week. He sang 'mamma mia', and 'we are the world perfectly' (I know strange choice for a children's' concert!!), you would not have picked him out of a group of NT's - I cried buckets. He sat through an hour in blazing heat, and then went off to have a drink with the others, and no TA in tow. We've done many therapies, diets and biomed they've all played their part - but I think RDI is, as the blurb suggests, tackling the real core deficits of autism. Guest guest
Hi , It's quite hard to get your head round to start with because it's so unlike the way other home programmes are set up but it's a lifestyle therapy and so there is no set amount of hours. Everything you do with your child will be RDI, i.e. mealtimes, bedtime, playing, etc. and quite often you have to involve them in day to day tasks such as getting them to help you with the housework, DIY, gardening, etc. as part of RDI. It is a parent-based therapy but I think lots of people either send their children to school or use therapists (not called therapists in RDI) who can then use RDI-friendly techniques. We employ 'therapists' and they do 15 hours a week between them. There is an RDI activities book with eye contact exercises but it is out of date now. RDI is no longer activities based and does not have exercises any more. It has parent objectives (for your training) followed by child objectives. You involve the child in what you do whilst working on your current objective. It is incredibly complicated and I can't imagine anyone being able to do it without a consultant. hope that helps, Sara .. candicecbt wrote: > > > Thanks all for your contact details and willingness to share > (offline).
