Autism Bill progress

Pressure on the government, particularly following the publication of the adult

strategy consultation, has meant the government will now support the progress of

the autism bill. This is a major breakthrough which follows some difficult

negotiations and amendments to the Bill itself.

Well done everyone who lobbied on this.

The Autism Bill will now require statutory guidance be issued to Local

Authorities and PCTs about supporting adults with autism. Under the Bill, this

statutory guidance will have to include the following areas:

- Transition Planning

- Diagnosis

- Identification and Assessment

- Provision of Services

- Training of Professionals

- Local Authority/PCT Leadership

Amendments to cover the areas above were actually tabled by the Government

themselves, and were voted through unanimously. All other clauses were dropped

and so the bill is now focussed on transition and adulthood.

It is expected that the Bill will progress unopposed through its remaining

parliamentary stages, and the 3rd reading of the Bill will take place on the

19th June. It is however always wise to be cautious as in theory there are still

plenty of stumbling blocks before this becomes an 'Autism Act'.
