So I'm curious about anyone having familial aldo. I'm starting to wonder if I have glucocorticoid remediable aldosteronism. I have always known my grandma has suffered from low K & high BP for about 5 decades, but I just found out my uncle has too for about 3 decades. Plus my great grandma died from a heart attack at 49. I'm starting to wonder about GRA also because all evidence suggests I should be feeling better now that my K has stabilized but I am having many other severe symptoms, so I think cortisol might be an issue. I have extreme joint pain & pain in my feet, severe mood swings & anxiety to name a few. Or does GRA cause thyroid issues? Is there anyone in our group who has GRA? And what is the most efficient testing to diagnose this situation? Also, if anyone wants to give moral support I'll take it. This is starting to wear on me. Guest guest
There does seen to be some links to excess aldo and bipolar disorder and depression. It might be a case of what came first the chicken or the egg. Both bipolar disorder and depression runs in my family. > > > I have BAH so don't know about GRA but I was on spiro for 6 mo. Guest guest
But look at it how it has been for many of us in this day and age and how we can barely get ourselves diagnosed, even some who went to world renowned medical centers still missed their diagnoses. If it's GRA most will never know because they do not have the money for testing it now, and as to family in the past it was likely, almost certainly, that if they had PA in a family past it was almost with all certainty overlooked because we are so incredibly focused on (obsessed with?) only cholesterol and lifestyle (stress, diet, lack of exercise) as the reasons for HTN. Insurances sure as heck aren't covering genetic testing just for curiosity reasons. Even mildy low K, one that can in reality cause a myriad of life-altering symptoms is never treated or even makes the radar to most medical providers as to having any relationship to a patients complants. So GRA probably exists in quite a few of us, but we'd never know. We can only do what I do and that is question family members and encourage them to watch their BP's and if we notice similar complaints we have had in them, to ask the right questions, find out their K levels, etc. My Dad's side all have had, and every single uncle and my grandfather and his dad all died of massive strokes according to my grandma (I was there for my grandpas) yet no one ever reported a low K she says. But many of us on here had low K's but no one ever even told them as it was simly deemed a side effect of a med or just ignored. They all had documented HTN. But so far my father at age 62, does not. Guest guest
I second that too about the correcting of the K. Except for me the anxiety and restlessness definitely decreased, but really had gone down after the hyperthyroid was normal again (on it's own). But what was left was helped by the spiro and/or getting my pressure and K under control. Maybe there are those gender differences hormonally in that respect since I am a man, and it seems many of us have reported a decrease in emotioal symptms, while many women report an increase - it seems anyway, I didn''t read though the posts. I have BAH so don't know about GRA but I was on spiro for 6 mo. I had mood swings ,crying spells ,anxiety and just couldn't handle life. I was put on Eplerenone and felt much better. Debbie 50 yo female, BAH, diagnosed Mar. 2010, left ADX Nov. 2011, hyperaldosteronism From: virgwall@...Date: Thu, 10 May 2012 01:48:29 +0000Subject: Genetics-GRA? So I'm curious about anyone having familial aldo. I'm starting to wonder if I have glucocorticoid remediable aldosteronism. I have always known my grandma has suffered from low K & high BP for about 5 decades, but I just found out my uncle has too for about 3 decades. Plus my great grandma died from a heart attack at 49. (all the same line). My brother also has had high BP for about 5-7 years but I haven't asked him about K issues yet. I know he suffers from periodic anxiety & depression.I'm starting to wonder about GRA also because all evidence suggests I should be feeling better now that my K has stabilized but I am having many other severe symptoms, so I think cortisol might be an issue. I am crying every day and feeling like I need to throw up from anxiety constantly :-( Pretty ironic considering I've always been a reasonably happy person and always able to manage stress very well. I am learning all types of new sympathy for people suffering with mood disorders!!Virginia31 year old female diagnosed in Februarylabetalol 200 mg bidK 20 Meq bidspiro 100 mg 1xdayLatest K 3.8 (without tourniquet)
Guest guest
By the way, what is BAH? I know there's a medical acronym file but it doesn't seem like a lot of the PA acronyms are on there. I had mood swings ,crying spells ,anxiety and just couldn't handle life. I was put on Eplerenone and felt much better. Did moodiness start when you were put on spiro? I had left ADX 6 mo ago. I'm off meds now and my bp is normal. The only time I feel a little anxiety is when my cycle comes around.
