Guest guest
This has been very efficient at clearing out my daughter . I give her 1/4 packet once every couple of weeks and she seems fine. She didn't tolerate movicol or magnesium. If he is very loaded you'll probably need more than 1/4 pkt. Guest guest
Hi, this worked initially for daniel and was the only thing that worked he was pooing once every 12 days or so. After HBOT, anti fungals (mainly nizarol, vancromcyin) dans bowels were great going every day. Bowels continue to need treating with anti fungals HBOT now and again and natural anti fungals and anti biotics. Picosulfate stops working as well as the body gets used to it at least that is what happened in our case. I think chelation has also helped dans bowels. dave Autism Treatment From: bill.molineux@...Date: Mon, 22 Jun 2009 20:51:51 +0000Subject: Re: Picosulfate any-one? Guest guest
Hiya We are just going to start using this too. We will use picolax and picosulphate (dont know if they are the same thing? one can be titred for daily use and the other one is for blasting out stuff say before bowel surgery). We used this first off when we went to the Royal Free back in 2001. It was not effective and we used it every weekend for about 4 months-ish (? cant remember now). It didnt touch rebeccas impaction but maybe now she is more frequently cleared out it will work better. I am now certain gets pain from movicol, only taken me 9 years to figure that out mind you!! Will let you know how it goes. Luv caroline xx > > Hi, this worked initially for daniel and was the only thing that worked he was pooing once every 12 days or so. Guest guest
-- we are using sodium picosulfate at the moment for ds constipation. The regime we are using for this is a low dose every other day, this is working well at present, causing some minor tummy pain but shifting the ***t, which is what you want it to do. I am expecting at some point though for ds bowels to get use to it and stop working again, then we will have to move on to something else!!! Caroline, we have also had major problems with movicol, it is now on my never again list!!! It is not the wonderful medicine the nhs seem to think it is imo. Guest guest
Hiya Nikki, How much are you using of the picosulfate per day? Is picolax the one you use Shaz for the frequent clear outs that you take a sachet then 6 hours later have another one? Or am I getting this mixed up? Nikki is your son tolertaing it OK? I was using just oxypowder for a wee while and it wasnt too bad, splattery loos mind you (sorry if you are eating!!) Then got a strep throat again and it all went a bit pear shaped. After a course of penicillin s stools are wonderful then we need to watch as she gets bunged up. She was in agony the other night, it was awful. I gave her some movicol as I was so worried and the next day she was quite grumpy. I think I couldnt see this type of behaviour before because she took movicol a lot. Today massive clumpy bowel movements as I think she has a massive baggy area which just fills up. I can actually see this slightly diagonally across her, just below her ribs, then she gets so bloated, its really quite frightening, poor wee thing, what our little kids go thru. Tomoro is 12 I cant believe we have been tackling this for so long now. Luv Caroline xx > -- we are using sodium picosulfate at the moment for ds constipation. Guest guest
Hi Caroline, The one I've been using is Picolax, then on the box it says it contains Sodium picosulphate 100mgs.Mag oxide 3.5 gms, Citric acid anhydrous 12.0g. potassiumbicarb, saccharin sodium and natural spray dried orange flavour. I was doing 1 sachet every 3-4 wks, but she looked so washed out after it , so I've been trying with reduced amounts. I've also started her on Ducosol which is milder. The immunologist advised this twice a day , but I'm only once a day at the moment as I hate giving her laxatives before school ,so will move on to twice a day in the school holidays and then try and leave the picolax out. I do worry about giving stimulant laxatives because of dependancy.I'm going to try psyllium as well. At the moment I'm not sure how she is going because she is flushing the toilet. One skill I wish she hadn't got ! So I'm just gauging her on how bloated her tummy is. I'm sorry I think I have deleted some of your post in error. Happy Birthday to for tomorrow I hope you all have a lovely day !! Hugs Sharon xx then 6 hours later have another one? Or am I getting this mixed up? Guest guest
Caz, DS is on 5mls of the liquid sodium picosulphate every other day. I'm expecting this at some point to stop working as his body get used to it and then i will have to rethink things, but at the moment this is going well for him without too many problems. He is a big strapping 13yr old lad mind u so that dosage might be a bit much for Becs. Sodium Picosulphate is the same as Picolax i believe? You saying bowels are brill when she is on penecillin makes me wonder whether her constipation issues are due to bacterial overgrowth (this is not that usual i would suspect) or whether the antibiotic which would perhaps in a normal child cause diarrohea is just in fact loosening Becs stools so she goes normally, what do you think??? Movicol can cause quite bad griping pains i believe, this is probably what you are seeing. When she was on it all the time maybe she just ignored the pain as some of our kids tend to do, mine included. Guest guest
Hi Nikki, Thanks for this. I think the picolax comes in these sachets which you do take 6 hours apart (this is for the clear outs) and I think this elixir is what we will also use every day so I had to get the prescription changed to the 2 different things, get them today so will let you know. I agree that its griping pains with the movicol and I just couldnt see that until we had been off it for a while and then tried it again and it was so glaringly obvious, that makes me feel really bad actually that I didnt know before. One of the teachers at Becks school that I mentioned this too has IBS and said she gets the same with movicol. I dont know about the antibiotics but she definitley does have bacterial overgrowth and now we see her quite obsessive after these strep throats. I am going to try some LDM this summer, she does really well with any of this antibacterial, killing stuff, been on dioxychlor for 6 months and that has been brill, now cant get a hold of the stuff so am switching to MMS, which is similar. Nothing so far has really touched strep so shall keep you posted. Dr Fell reckons that you can alter the bowel flora for a while (even with SCD, antibiotics etc) but it just doesnt stay long term and I pretty much think thats true. For us SCD has been great for yeats and has helped the bowel lots but its very limited for us not eating so many foods and that does worry me a bit long term too, sigh, its not easy to know the best solution, but will let you know how it goes. So glad DS doing good on picosulfate for now. Luv C xx > Caz, > > DS is on 5mls of the liquid sodium picosulphate every other day. I think chelation has also helped dans bowels. > > > > > > > > > > dave > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Autism Treatment > > > > > From: bill.molineux@ > > > > > Date: Mon, 22 Jun 2009 20:51:51 +0000 > > > > > Subject: Re: Picosulfate any-one? > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > This has been very efficient at clearing out my daughter . Guest guest
The studies on probiotics tend to show that the effects are transient ie they work while they are in your bowel. Then they are excreted and, natch, don't work any more. LDM is supposed to be anti-viral. Sally carolinetraa2000 wrote: > > > Hi Nikki, > Thanks for this. Guest guest
-Nikki, Joining this late but what did you use instead of movicol and how long did it take you to wean him off.?Also how long was he on movicol before you weaned him off? We are using picosulphate too and still experimenting with the dosage and frequency..I thought it was senna and picosulphate type medications that could cause griping type pains cos they sort of mimic the peristaltic type action............ Have you ever used suppositories? TIA Nina > > DS is on 5mls of the liquid sodium picosulphate every other day. I'm expecting this at some point to stop working as his body get used to it and then i will have to rethink > Movicol can cause quite bad griping pains i believe, this is probably what you are seeing. When she was on it all the time maybe she just ignored the pain as some of our kids tend to do, mine included. > > Nikki x > >

Guest guest
Hi Nina, I went back to senna after realising the movicol was causing problems and i did a straight switch, no weaning off. He wasn't on the movicol that long, maybe a month or so. I had been very leary of using movicol anyway so i was keeping a close eye on it. I don't know if you are aware but the manufacterers of movicol recommend its usage for only 2 weeks!!! The NHS seem to completely ignore this fact!!! Unfortunately movicol causes pain as well as the other 2 you mention, its deciding which is the lesser evil for your child :+( BTW i have now got rid of the senna as well and working on getting rid of the picosulphate as well! I have used suppositories when ds was smaller (he is now a big strapping 13 year old), i used the bisacodyl ones as a last resort clear-out, if i could get them in! I have no chance of using them now he would see them coming a mile off and do a runner!!!!!! hth, Nikki x > -Nikki, > > Joining this late but what did you use instead of movicol and how long did it take you to wean him off.?Also how long was he on movicol before you weaned him off? > > We are using picosulphate too and still experimenting with the dosage and frequency..I thought it was senna and picosulphate type medications that could cause griping type pains cos they sort of mimic the peristaltic type action............ > > Have you ever used suppositories? > TIA Nina > > > >
Guest guest
-Thanks Nikki, -Wow how are you managing to get rid of senna and co.?? I had managed to wean jack , also 13 ,off movicol a few years ago by going Gaps for a while but after lots of viral infections last year constipation came back with a vengence and he is back on all this. Guest guest
Sorry Sal, slip of the tongue, didnt mean research meant info sheets regarding LDM (shall send you). Also if you read about it on the net as an old native american indian cure it also always talks about strep, respiratory issues being helped by it, worth a try for us with ongoing streppy things. Nikki I would also love to know how you are avoiding all laxatives (or do u mean you are still on oxypowder). We can get away with not using stuff for short eriods but then we get the huge poos and I imagine thats painful. Followed by sluggishness again and ultimately backlog of pooh, an ongoiung saga. Off to collect my picolax now! Guest guest
I think the movicol might be causing Tom pain, and of course it's corn based and he's on SCD so not ideal from any angle. But the loading causes him more pain. We're doing prunes, movicol and oxypowder! he hates the prunes, the oxypowder is a bit violent and movicol contains corn and is for short term use. He wouldn't tolerate a suppository and the problem is further up anyway. He does drink a lot of water and spend a lot of time on the trampoline which helps. Since starting him back on diflucan he has much less undigested food - why would that be? Villi working better without thick layer of yeast? Anyway, bloody uphill struggle and he's due for a clear out this weekend. Gah. Guest guest
Hi Steph are you using the paediatric movicol? Sam was bad on the adult movicol but much better on the childrens one, we alternate with psyllium husk, prune juice in his morning juice. hope the clearout goes well, Sam is much better in the summer, sure its because of the increase in hours on the trampoline shaking everything down! Guest guest
Hi Steph I wondered what you mean by Movicol being corn based. Its just a bunch of chemicals I thought. Poly ethylene glycol(which draws water into the bowel), Sodium chloride, sodium bicarbonate and potassium chloride which are all salts? Guest guest
Hi Caz, Unfortunately ds is still needing a variety of laxatives, what i am trying to do is get him off the prescription stuff very gradually and onto more natural stuff. We don't used oxypowder very much now, but a range of ongoing other stuff to keep him going (see my next post to Nina for details!) Nikki x PS i loved your ad in the Autism File, GREAT IDEA, i hope you get lots of scottish mums to your first gathering!!! > Nikki I would also love to know how you are avoiding all laxatives (or do u mean you are still on oxypowder). Guest guest
Nina, I haven't quite managed to get rid of all the prescription stuff yet, but that is the plan. DS is still taking the picosulphate and some lactulose, plus domperidone to increase gastric emptying which is in there to help with the reflux, but i have my doubts that this is doing much at all. So these are all on my 'to go' list!!! He is also taking a variety of non-prescription stuff, which i plan to increase as i get rid of the other stuff. But i am doing this very slowly to allow the bowel to reshape,so as not to upset anything and send us back to square one, you know how delicate a balancing act this can be and how easily things can be scuppered by such things as a viral infection unfortunately. If its useful for you or anyone else here is a list of the other stuff i am using to help with constipation, i don't profess to know all the answers but am trying this to see if it works for us. Magnesium Citrate powder - kirkmans Lower bowel formula - tincture by Dr (contains Cascara sacrada) Caricol sachets Pantothenic acid (vit B5) plus you need to keep yeast under control as this can be very constipating as i'm sure you know. Also a healthy diet with as much fruit and veg as you can (or are allowed)and loads of water - sorry these things sound like such basic stuff and you probably know and do this already, but its good for me to remind myself that i do this basic stuff as well and its all important, don't you think? Guest guest
--Hi Nikki, Thanks for sharing. Yes I try to give loads of veg and fruit .Some people swear by prunes, or butternut squash and others by oranges and kiwi to get those bowels moving but its not enough here at present. I use two of the ones you mentioned.. What is this tincture ? and I will look into the B vits. TIA Nina > > If its useful for you or anyone else here is a list of the other stuff i am using to help with constipation, i don't profess to know all the answers but am trying this to see if it works for us. > > Magnesium Citrate powder - kirkmans > Lower bowel formula - tincture by Dr (contains Cascara > sacrada) > Caricol sachets > Pantothenic acid (vit B5) > > plus you need to keep yeast under control as this can be very constipating as i'm sure you know. > >
Guest guest
Hi Nina, This is the tincture we are using: http://www.iherb.com/-s-Original-Formula-Lower-Bowel-Formula-2-fl-oz-\ 59-ml/11809?at=0 I get it from iherb in the US as it is not available as a tincture in this country, but you can buy it in a capsule here from Herbs Hand Healing i think? It taste pretty yucky and as my ds wont swallow caps i have had to get the tincture which is slightly more paletable for him. It contains cascara sacrada as the main ingredient, which is a slightly milder laxative than senna and also it is supposed to help in reconditioning the bowel into working better, whereas some of the others such as senna tend to make the bowel lazier. I have found that its not effective if the bowel is really stuffed up as its not that strong but if you can get things moving a bit then it is a useful addition. I did see a while ago a DAN Dr presentation on line using this product to combat constipation but cant find it now otherwise i would post it for you. Although i had used it in the past before seeing this. Hth, Nikki x In Autism Treatment , " malcolm4237 " <mmcivor@...> wrote: > > --Hi Nikki, > > Thanks for sharing.
