I wrote a critique of this paper for Pure Power magazine; unfortunately the

issue is now out of print. But the bottom line is that these guys had a

very, very selective interpretation of the research and ignored huge bodies

of evidence that conflicted with what they were claiming.

When there are studies that are in contrast with each other, I always

suspect that there must be some truth on both sides of the argument. It is

also the symptom that there is probably a lot of science yet to be uncovered

on the subject. Additional understanding of what is being debated would

probably explain why in one case a certain result was obtained, and why in a

different case a significantly different result was obtained.

I read ' evaluations and he did not actually question the validity of

science yet to be uncovered on the subject. "

I also way back then read the paper presented, and felt ' critique spot

on.

That said, there is to my knowledge no acceptable evidence that one can

achieve the maximum stimulus value possible via the use of a Single Set

Stimulus. This, while accepted by some, has NEVER been observed in but

limited, and incomplete studies.

In the History of Strength Training, we cannot deny, that progression via

stimulus/response adaptation will eventually require a level of stimulus we

call OVERLOAD. In the History of Strength Training we can see that

eventually this level cannot be attained in a Single Set, and to create the

various stimuli that would create it, we need to employ a second set.

This then is the foundational pillar of ' training message. He

claimed Maximum Effort through HIGH INTENSITY would always cause such a

stimulus, and that simply is not possible. Eventually, the

stimulus/response will become circular. That is, the performance will reach

a level where WORK beyond the previous bout CANNOT be exceeded. This means

No Overload, and No Adaptation other than maintenance of that level of

conditioning.

The reason this has ANY TRACTION at all as a concept, is because initial

trainees have initial adaptations that are easily produced, and any level of

stimulus beyond what they had produced in the past cause adaptation. That

initial progress fools most into thinking all one need do is continue on

with even higher intensity (effort to ability) and the adaptations will

continue. However, the body has a physiological limit on the level and

quantity of stimuli that can be produced in a Single Set of Reps. That is

why Multiple Sets and even periodization schedules are the more accepted

practice in Advanced Strength Training Protocols.
