We just got in brace as well and our hospital didn't give shirts. I hear many Shriners do. Another member blessed us and sent some of her little one. They are knit rite but will only sell to a company, not an indiviual. A local orthodics place in my area has offerred to order for me and sell them to me at cost. and JimmyMommy and daddy to Grace, 10, Tryston, 5Drue, 1, out of cast #213* out of cast, down from 26*, started at 40*In first braceSt. Louis Shriners Hospital

Our son is in a brace for the summer. Where can you buy the shirts for under the brace? He is about 30 lbs - 3 years old.

When we used braces before, we just used tank tops under them. Not sure if your brace fits differently though of if it would work for your kiddo's. I hope we don't have to use the brace shirts. They are so thick and hot looking.

Keep us posted!

I hope you can find some. My son just started in his first brace and our hospital gave us a weeks worth of shirts. They say it protects the skin, he doesn't seem too hot right now in them but I am sure he will by mid summer. Good luck finding them. What kind of brace is it?

If it is a Boston Brace, you can google boston brace products and order them

online. They are 25 dollars each tho. I think they are supposed to be seamless

so as not to make a sore in the skin with how tight the brace is. The t shirts

are supposed to wick away sweat better than regular fabric. My dd has already

started complaining of the heat. She is about to outgrow the first size, but is

not quite ready. If the t shirt is too big, it buckles under the tightness of

the brace. I can spare one if you would like to try it. Send me privately

where to send it and well send it along.

Dana and Chuck,

Our son is in a cast, but the shirts I think are the same.  They have silver in them that makes them antimicrobial, helps fight off bacteria.  They are seamless, and you can get them in tanks or t-shirts.

The maker is Knit-Rite..I went online they are about 25-30 bucks.

We get ours directly from the orthotics department that makes us the brace. We haven't been charged for one yet. It's the knitrite brand that they use during casting as well. They also told us that we could use any other form-fitting t-shirt that was comfortable to our child. Just be sure to smooth out creases and wrinkles in the fabric before you put on the brace. - Noelle's mommy, 3 years oldRochester NYCasted 8 times for 1 1/2 years and in first brace!reflux, mild plagiocephaly, mild torticollos, hypotonia, ligament laxity, suspected Ehler's Danlos III

They gave us one of the knitrite shirts too, it was the "tank" style, problem I had with it is it is VERY thick, was VERY hard to get on, and since it doesn't have ANY finished seams, it would roll up at the bottom and roll in at the sleeves. Grace really didn't like this and as I mentioned, regular tank tops worked well for us. Grace was almost 2 when she got her first brace and I actually used onesies under them before she grew out of all her onesies.

I have 5 brace shirts that I can send you. Email me your address at my email and

I will get them sent to you. They are very good and help wick away the moisture.

Just an FYI not all Hospitals use the knitrite under the cast. They use a

different material that comes in a tube form that they can cut. I recieved ours

from another member on the group at the time because the ortho's in Colorado do

not have the knit rite. Knitrite also will only sell to a dr or hospital so it

is hard to order them.

I wanted to give a little info that I haven't seen on this thread yet (but maybe I just missed it)...

The Knit-Rite shirts are seamless and fit the child's body without any looseness at all.  They will not bunch up or wrinkle under the places where the brace fits tightly against the skin.  This is important b/c any wrinkle, seam, etc. that lies under the tight places will make indentations in the child's skin and feel very uncomfortable!  If the brace is full-time, as Todd's is, then these places could easily become too irritated to wear the brace, I imagine.  They do tend to roll up under the bottom of the brace if left alone, but we just tug the shirt down and then fold it up over the outside of the bottom of the brace, then pull his elastic-waist shorts/pants over the folded-up shirt, and no more rolling up!

Todd's brace comes so high under his arm pits and at his collar bone that he needs the t-shirt style since the tank style has a v-neck and the arm holes go down too low.  There is a tank style with under-arm flaps, but it does have a v-neck.  In his case, his brace is so tight over much of his body--we've tried a regular slim-fitting t-shirt and a tank top, as well as a pajama top, but they all wrinkle and bunch under the brace and he flatly refuses to wear them.

There are two types of Knit-Rite material that I'm familiar with.  The silver-impregnated material is the most anti-microbial, however, either it isn't made into the t-shirt style, or our orthotist just didn't have them, I don't know which.  The white t-shirt type we have says it is antimicrobial, too, and wicks away moisture from the skin.

It is thick, but it's all we've got, so we just make the best of the coolest parts of the day!  :o)

As for where to get the shirts--our orthotist supplied us with a week's worth.  Our insurance pays for all of them, I think (we haven't been billed yet), so this is the main advantage to getting these shirts from your orthotist.  I have no idea if it would be possible for insurance to pick up shirt charges if they come from a different orthotist.  But it seems like you would be able to pay out of pocket at a different orthotist's office if you explained the situation to them!

Good luck,

, Mommy to Todd

We also use the Knit-Rite shirts and even though they are very thick they actually keep her from sweating under the brace. I have had to use a onesis when I was washing her other shirt and she was soaking wet after a few hours. I researched buying the shirt online but could not find any place that would sell to an individual. I called the orthotist office that we got the brace and they sell them. I bought two extra and they were $28 each. I didn't use our insurance for these shirts so you could probably call any office and they will sell them to you. We use the knit-rite shirts too. I think they work really well. I just try to take the shirt off when I have the brace off to let his skin breath. I did try onezies but they didn't work for us, thaddeus sweats a lot. We got our shirts for our Ortho but they cost us $52 each here in Canada... Crazy....
