O.K, this is something I have always wondered about because Sage has a dimple also. She also this protruding bony spot right above it, you know where most of us " sway in " a bit right there, she goes out. They even commented on it as they were trimming her cast in Chicago.

It was first suspected that she had a tethered spinal cord, but that was ruled out by a MRI. It is recorded in her medical record as " fatty pad over sacrum with low shallow dimple " . Sage had no " extra " hair, either.

If I had sense enough to attach a picture I would....How do I do it, Heidi???  On Thu, Apr 15, 2010 at 11:06 PM, NIck Guthe <nickguthe@...> wrote:

I'm trying to attach the photo of Bex's sacral dimple, he is about 11 months old in this picture. His Scoli is very visible, but because he is twisted in his pose, it does look worse in this photo than it looked in person at that age. I know that not all kids who have sacral dimples have Scoli and vice versa, but I am surprised the doctor said it was nothing- especially because it can be connected to Spina Bifida, etc... said that it is one of the things that Mehta looks for, and a picture of it will be going in the pediatrician  awareness packet.

OK I am kinda freaking out right now.  First off I had to look it up because I wasn't for sure I knew what it was, BUT as soon as I did and saw some pictures it all came back to me.  And I can not believe this could have been a sign.  And had a TON of hair all over his back.

I can remember the boys' pediatrician when they were first born noticed something right above his butt.  I will have to ask my mom about it because I can not remember those crazy times with 2 newborns, but something stands out to me about this.

Todd had no sacral dimple or other skin anomalies.

I just looked it up on the Mayo Clinic website, which said that sacral dimples most often are nothing more than sacral dimples, but that rarely they can have a more serious underlying cause such as spina bifida if the dimple is very deep.  I do recall that infants with scoli may have more body hair in places on their backs, but Todd never had that, either.

Odd... everyone in my family has the dimple there.  (Mine is actually sideways now- I broke my tailbone in a sword fight in middle school and it's been sideways ever since.) We actually make fun of our " crooked butt cracks " .  But Doc is the first with scoli.  (Although, we noticed that my 9 year old has a slight curve to her back- but the doctors said that it's not severe enough to be bothered with.)

I'll have to see if Doc's looks any different than my other kids now.a

I was talking with and the first thing I noticed that was unusual about Bex at 6 months of age was a small dimple just above his butt crack. I brought it up to our pedi doc and she said it was nothing, it was " just Bexon, just him " . I thought nothing of it because I didn't know it could be a sign related to Scoli and other things- I believe also neuro things like Bex's Syrinx cyst in his spine, and it can also be a sign of tethered cord, potentially. ..if I remember that right.

This takes us back to when we could have really caught this well before he was properly treated at 61 degrees, 19 months. I wanted to mention this for anyone else it may help. We are still with the same pedi but thinking of leaving, as this is still upsetting. She was on maternity leave at his 12 month check up and so we don't blame her for that...we parents didn't notice the slightest curve until he was walking at 11.5 months...but, still, the sacral dimple is NOT nothing, it comes up on Google. Are they not taught about sacral dimples in medical school???

This could have saved Bexon years and years of casting and bracing- not to mention quite a lot of out of pocket cost to the family for years of medical travel, co-pays, etc...not to mention stress and EMOTIONAL cost to the entire family-especially our child!!! Okay, found myself venting a bit. The orthos we saw may still not have given us the right advice, leading us to still lose many precious months...I am still baffled by the lack of basic knowledge out there about this. Anyone else's babe have a sacral dimple?
