I have just joined this group as a suggestion from the doctor I saw today about

my daughter, 's scoliosis. We have been in a brace as suggested by a

different doctor and it is not what I want for her. So I went for a 2nd opinion

today and the talk of casting was the goal for her. She is at 28 degrees w/ RVAD

of 8. Can anyone give us advice on what to expect for her after 1st cast. I am

also concerned about her going to day care with this cast, anyone else have that

issue and can you help? is 16 months old and we are going to Children's

Hospital at Birmingham.

Welcome to CAST! If you haven't already seen it, there is a short document on what to expect on the first cast day, plus diapering and bathing tips on the home page of www.infantilescoliosis.org - it's on the left in blue, the top link. Ask any and all questions you have, we've all been there! Hello and welcome!

We also go to Bham--have been pts there since 2008.  You are in good hands. Lucky little to have parents who are so on top of things!

I will be very happy to talk with you about the specifics of what happens there at Bham.  It's different at every hospital.  Feel free to email me offlist dew.writes@... .

will adapt very quickly to her cast, and although this all feels (and is) overwhelming right now, you will adapt soon, too.  Before you go, make sure you have something a size larger for her to wear.  You're lucky she can wear dresses--my son had lots of issues with getting pants to stay up on his cast!

Todd was in mmo a couple of days a week.  I showed the teachers how to do his diapers, which is pretty different for a cast kid!!  I took a waterproof smock for him to wear when they did messy crafts and hand-washing, and bibs with pockets for snack time.  He did not like to have the other kids get too near when they were active because at that age, they topple into each other all the time, and he would get " beetled " on the ground if he fell on his back.  But he was fine there.  The only big issue was going outside to play.  You will need to address the overheating factor very carefully-- will get too hot very quickly in her cast, even on days that do not feel hot to other people.  You can get a cooling vest--Todd had one of the prototypes from ISOP--we took extra cooling cells in a little cooler, but even with that, there were days that he simply had to stay in the shade or indoors.  Also, you'll have to address the mulch-down-the-cast issue.  Anything that goes down and gets stuck can potentially cause bad skin problems.  If her day care providers are able to give her individualized care and attention, they should do fine taking care of her in her cast as long as you feel comfortable explaining everything to them.  I am sure other parents will have advice and experiences to share, too.
