Hi Dianna,

First, woo hoo for Marcela!

Now to answer your question--I think it's not very unusual for some kids to have a few delays after spending a long time in casts.  For Todd, who was casted for a year, it took him a few months to fully realize how bendy he really was, and what that meant he could do!  Crawling under chairs to retrieve dropped toys, for instance, LOL.  Jumping is one thing he's just now beginning to own, after a 16 months out of casts.  He would sort of hop and then bring the other foot forward, but not get both feet off the ground consistently.  I think it's related to learning to bend his torso.  He's not really good at jumping off things, either, but we're getting there.  Some children do all that early, and some take longer...

If you have any concerns, you could have a PT/OT evaluate her.  They can give you some exercises/games to encourage her to jump and run, and check for anything else that they may be able to help with.

Good luck, and congrats again on the great results!

I began thinking that at the time when she would have normally learned to do these things, she had a 3 lb. cast on and just could not (she was just trying to keep her balance in it!). So I'm wondering if any other parents have experienced certain motor delays in their children post-cast? Really, I'm thinking that that's all it is, but maybe I just want a little affirmation....

BTW, CASTING WORKS! Marcela is straight and going strong! WOO-HOO!Dianna (mommy to Marcela, 22 mos. currently cast-free after 3 casts)

Thanks (: I think youre right about it being all about the torso. She

hadnt used her core in some time while she was casted so maybe it just takes a

while to develop that strength. THinking about PT...

Dianna,I can't remember the age cut-off for ECI, but you may check into that. Early Childhood Intervention through the state of Texas. If you are not familiar with them they will come to your home and evaluate her and if need be come to your home for therapy. And you do not pay anything or a very small amount depending on income. That is who I went through for . Although he did not need professional PT they still gave me exercise to do with him at home.BTW is just now really jumping well. He will be FIVE years old in 3 weeks.'s doc did not think he even needed to be evaluated, but I thought after being in a cast for 14 months he might have weaker core muscles. ECI found that to be true, but it was not bad. The exercises

they gave us to do did help and he was quickly doing the same as his brother. He still today remains to be a little weaker at some things, but no big deal for me. He still is a strong little boy. It doesn't hurt to have her checked out. If nothing else it will make you feel better and not worry. TashaMommy of 4 year old twin boys- and Fort Worth, TexasSeries of 6 casts for 14 months. Hi Dianna,

My daughter, will be 2 in June and hasn't really started jumping yet either. She was first casted at 9 1/2 months. She had 2 casts, was supposed to get a 3rd, but had some issues under anesthia, so she went right into a brace for 4 months. We just weaned her off her brace bc/her Dr at SLC wants her to be brace free for 2 months before we go back so he can get a true idea of what her back is doing. She's very petite and I think with our kids having casts on they do get low muscle tone and weakness. With time and as they start to discover all they can do, they'll catch up. Remember that at this age, they really only concentrate on one thing, so if Marcela is trying to talk, then things like learning how to jump or run will take a backseat and vice versa. With time, I'm sure she'll catch on, but you could always have her see a PT to have her evaluated. Hope this helps!

(mother to - 21 1/2 months old - 2 casts - 1 brace - fr SLC)

Dianna/Tasha,

When we lived in TX we used ECI for Isaiah to learn to sit, crawl, etc. The age cut off is 3 yrs old. They provide PT, OT, ST, etc. whatever your child needs. They will come out and do an evaluation and decide what services are needed. Your peds office should have the ECI number in your area to call them. They are a great resource!!

Thanks , thats a great help! If the age cut off is 3 then we have a good

amt of time to use their services. I have an apt tomorrow with the pediatrician

anyway so i'll ask her about it(:

Congrats on being straight and cast-free! that's amazing and a dream come true for us all! As far as the jumping, Noelle was able to do that in cast and out of cast after the initial adjustment period. The only thing that she hasn't done is turn a somersault..... She used to do that pre-cast, but hasn't since we started casting. I would ask your pediatrician at your next visit.... And congrats again!- Noelle's mommy, 3 years oldRochester NYCasted 8 times for 1 1/2 years and in first brace!reflux, mild plagiocephaly, mild torticollos, hypotonia, ligament laxity, suspected Ehler's Danlos III
