chapter 104 – Prescribing Probiotics

H. Greenfield, MD

in order to minimize exposure to gastric acid, most experts recommend taking

probiotics on an empty stomach. When taken during a course of antibiotic

therapy, probiotics should be started as soon as possible and continued for 7 to

14 days after completion of therapy. There appears to be no need to separate the

time of ingestion of the antibiotic and the probiotic.

I've heard the same thing. I've heard that pro biotic bacteria doesn't

survive the stomach. And to make the pro biotic work it has to pass through

the stomach.

remember seeing her lecture on PBS in which she mentioned that for pro biotics

to

work they must pass through the stomach without being destroyed by stomach

acid.

Perhaps we should take antacids when taking pro biotics? Or proton pump

inhibitors?

Do the cultures really survive the stomach acid? I always wondered.
