We used a brand recommended by Kirkman Laboratories.

The product was suitable for children and adults ,, including ones with

severe allergies to fillers, coloring etc..

it was called Pro- bio gold.... by Kirkman.. it comes in an amber

bottle and is chilled upon arrival.. and Yes it is sooooo expensive.. I

think 80.00 a bottle... and insurance does not cover it...but it worked

wonders for us....

Hope this helps

This was it! Thank you. I remember because it had the pharmacy search

engine, and because I forwarded the info to a friend with ulcerative

colitis. Thank you everybody for helping!

Thanks Debora. I'm still naive on this.

I thought lactobacillus contained lactose (because of the spelling). Didn't do

my homework first.

So does lactobacillus acidophilus contain lactase (a digestive enzyme) - but no

lactose?

If so, it's an unfortunate spelling. 'Lactabacillus' would make it clearer.

Thanks for the tutoring,

regards,

Cris

Sorry for the confusion, Cris. Lactobaccillus acidophilus is the

complete name of this probiotic. That is what I'm switching to from

lactose. Lactobaccillus=acidopholus; it's not another lactose product.

are they all the same strength? And I read they should be

refrigerated - my doctor never told me this.

in each capsule and also whether it is derived from dairy and contains

no soy, sugar, wheat, gluten, etc. Yes probiotic supplements should be

kept in the fridge.

Hi - I'm curious as to what type of reaction your daughter

had when you upped the dosage of acidophilus. I just increased my

son's probiotic recently (not acidophilus) and noticed that after the

second dosage within an hour he starts to cry and states that his belly

hurts. I was also thinking that this was some kind of die-off and

thought about lowering the dose and ramping it up more slowly to avoid

the crying and belly aches.

Am interested in your daughter's reaction.

Thanks,

Martha

Our little corner store used to order and stock Acidophilus milk for us and that

is what my dd used the entire time she was growing up. They don't make it

anymore, but it was a good product.

Vance's DariFree is one of those trial and error products: it can be

a huge yeast feeder for some people (the maltodextrin). It is also

protein free: we are used to our milk containing protein so you need

to make sure you get protein elsewhere. My son didn't do well on it,

but he liked it.

My mom is/has been almost fanatical about the benefits of acidophilus

milk - she has been drinking it for years, also boils milk & says

this helps her.. God bless my mom - she is the reason we had

acidophilus supps in my house over the years...

she also had amalgams on almost every single " big " tooth by the time

she was 16 - alot of things make more sense...tho' she still tends to

blame ongoing infections for the bulk of her past health issues..as

she says, live and learn...

ps - she had her teeth pulled about 4 yrs ago (dentures now), and,

wow, what a difference - she is so functioning now...onto my

siblings, we hope!!

Just FYI the pink gum part of dentures contains mercury and cadmium. Be aware

that Vance's Dari-Free contains (or at least did) titanium.

Acidophilus is a " good bacteria " that has been shown

to be beneficial in treatment of Acne, cystitis, ear

infections, gastrointestinal disorders, osteoporosis,

vaginitis, yeast infections and boosts your immune

response; helping the body to ward off offending

viruses and bacteria. Antibiotics kill acidophilus.

You can begin taking Acidophilus while on antibiotics,

but you need to continue treatment for at least one

month after you finish your antibiotic course for

complete replacement. Acidophilus is found naturally

in unpasturized yogurts.

(Forms available: Liquid, capsules, crystals, powders)

http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-acidophilus.htm

The term acidophilus is used to describe a number of

bacteria which help in human digestion. These bacteria

include L. acidophilus, L. casei, L. bulgaricus, among

others. Lactobacilus acidophilus is one of the

bacteria found in these mixtures, but the term

acidophilus usually refers to a combination of L.

acidophilus with other beneficial bacteria.

Acidophilus is touted for its many health benefits,

some of which have been known about for thousands of

years. The bacteria is found naturally throughout the

human body, and most likely made its way into a food

long ago, beginning a cycle of natural fermentation

which people eventually learned to artificially

duplicate.

When acidophilus are placed in a sugar-rich

environment, they begin to eat the sugars they find

there. They then convert these sugars into various

things, including lactic acid. This adds a distinctive

taste, and lowers the pH of the food or liquid so that

other flora do not find it as friendly an environment,

helping to preserve the food. Yogurt is probably the

most well-known of foods that make use of acidophilus,

and it is very easy to notice the sour taste of the

lactic acid when eating this food. Other foods that

contain acidophilus include sauerkraut, kombucha,

kinchi, kefir, and many other fermented food products.

Acidophilus can help protect the body against harmful

bacteria, parasites, and other organisms. As it breaks

down, it releases things such as hydrogen peroxide

that create a toxic environment for unhealthy

creatures in the body, helping to drive them out. It

also plays an important role in digestion, helping to

produce a number of chemicals which aid in the

digestion process.

Many alternative modalities of healing look to

acidophilus for a wide range of health benefits. In

addition to basic digestive assistance, acidophilus is

thought to help bolster the immune system as a whole.

It is also thought to provide some relief from

intestinal problems, such as diarrhea.

The fungal infection of Candida albicans, more

commonly referred to as a yeast infection when it

affects the genital area, is thought by some to be

controlled by acidophilus. Since acidophilus occurs

naturally in the genitals, and plays a role in warding

off such infections, some people advocate topical

treatment. The topical application of yogurt, which

contains acidophilus, is thought by many to help

relieve and ultimately cure a yeast infection. Oral

ingestion is also recommended, either of yogurt, or of

an acidophilus supplement.

Because antibiotics kill the so-called probiotics,

such as acidophilus, as well as harmful bacteria, many

people feel that an antibiotic regime can lead to

outbreaks of numerous problems, including yeast

infections. It is recommended by many to take

supplements of acidophilus and eat acidophilus-rich

foods for a period of time after completing a regimen

of antibiotics
