I have not had predisone in two years and really want to stay away from it.

This is good stuff though and am anxious to hear others thoughts on what they can drink. I thought my drinking days were over but find out that gin, vodka and whisky are ok. Unfortunately the three I have never liked. They will never compare to a good cold Sam light! You can tell I am from New England right?

All alcohol bothers me. I've found the only way to drink without having a nose asplosion (as we call it round these parts) is to take my zyflo about an hour before drinking. Of course, you may wish to debate the wisdom of combining two potential liver problems, but it works for me.

One of the reasons I wanted to desens (apart from feeling better and not having to take huge amounts of antibiotics and steroids) was to be able to enjoy a glass of wine or beer again. Aparently gin with tonic, and vodka are supposed to be alright, but I can't have any alcohol without reacting. The only time I can enjoy a glass of wine or beer is at the end of a steroid burst (about 5-7 days into taking oral steroids). So I guess the answer to your question, is that it's normal for a Samters suffer to react to alcohol. Sorry! I'm 36 and have had Samters for 8 years now, Becky Condouris <condour@...> wrote: All alcohol bothers me. I don't have Samter's, but the Failsafe Diet for those of us who are sensitive to salicylates offers Gin, Vodka, and Whiskey as alcoholic beverages. I believe that beer and wine are the worst things that you can do. Sulfite sensitivities often cross over to salicylate sensitivities.

Can you drink some alcohol while on predisone? I really makes me

feel sooo much better even though I know its not the best drug to be

on. I have a family party on Sunday that alcohol will get me thru

and I have been on my course of predisone for a week now so I am at

I usually have to take predisone like 3 times a year, not too bad

and they are always pretty short courses but I would much rather

not take it.. it does help with my sense of smell, which is great,

most of the year I cant smell a thing and I think that is

dangerous..can be good at times, haha

I am from New England as well, CT and hear ya about the

, I am not a beer drinker or even a big drinker at all but to

be able to relax and have a drink at a party or after a long night

would be great without the awful stuffiness I experience..

I’ve been on and off Prednisone for

years and still have a few drinks every day. It’s never been a problem

and my partner also goes on prednisone and he still has his few drinks a day.

Most of us start with Nasonex for the polyps and congestion, Singulair for

asthma and polyps, Advair for asthma, and antihistamines as needed. Often

we find something does not work as hoped and switch to some thing else, but

the above formula works for at least 50% of us.

My favorite antihistamine is astilin, it is too harsh for some but strong

enough to do something for me.

I take Seritide twice daily for

Samters/Asthma and also ventolin when needed. Prednisone every couple of months

when things get worse. Antibiotics when and if I get sinus infections.

I cannot drink wine anymore. I get really congested with a rapid

heart beat and face flushes. Lots of sneezing and wheezing. Yuck! I

do not seem to have a problem with beer, but I don't drink it very

often. I have never had any problems with hard liquer.

Unfortunately, it is wine that I prefer.

Hi

I have been monitoring this group for awhile. I developed

full blown samters in my 20’s. I am 47 now. I have gone

through several major and many minor surgeries. 3+ years ago I did some

research and it said that 65% of people with polyps will get relief from

Singulair. After my last surgery (3years ago) I asked my doctor if I

could go on singulair. I have had very very slight polyp growth, have not

had any sinus infections, have not had to take prednisone since that last

surgery (thank God).. All in all I am doing much better. My routine

is singulair, nexium (hiatal hernia), Nasacort and benedryl each night. I

do not do rinses. Did in past and didn’t feel they helped. Every

once in awhile I smell something. It is like a treat, not anything I can

count on.

The down side is that some days I am very lethargic, foggy from

the meds. I have struggles losing weight although that could be from other

reasons like middle age.

When I want a drink, I take a benedryl and make sure my husband

is driving!!!:)

My reading says that you have to have your liquor "neat." Cranberry and other fruit juices are high in salicylates. If I were you, I'd try it "neat" and then, go with a little lime which is low in salicylates. My response is going to differ from yours.

Benadryl is of course a very sedating med and may give you somewhat of a 'hangover' fuzzy feeling during the day as well as give you a propensity for weigh gain. If you have sleep issues you might want to have a sleep study done to see if you sleep architechture is normal and make sure you don't have sleep apnea which can really contribute to weigh gain ( there are good metabolic reasons for this) and fuzziness during the day. Some docs have access to a sleep screen but a full fledged sleep study is the gold standard and a lot of people are shocked to find out that they have a sever sleep disorder.Check it out! Carol

growth, have not had any sinus infections, have not had to take prednisone

since that last surgery (thank God).. All in all I am doing much better.

My routine is singulair, nexium (hiatal hernia), Nasacort and benedryl

each night. I do not do rinses. Did in past and didn’t feel they helped.

Every once in awhile I smell something. It is like a treat, not anything

I can count on.

The down side is that some days I am

very lethargic, foggy from the meds. I have struggles losing weight although

that could be from other reasons like middle age.

When I want a drink, I take a benedryl

and make sure my husband is driving!!!:)

Hi Janet

I noticed you put down a drug for hiatal hernia? Is this a tummy problem and is it related to the polyps and stuff? It's just that i have had samters for about 8 yrs and suffer regularly from excrutiatingly painful tummy problems and am yet unable to get a diagnosis/treatment but assumed (and had been told) they werent related.Cat

Hi

I have been monitoring this group for awhile. I developed full blown samters in my 20’s. I am 47 now. I have gone through several major and many minor surgeries. 3+ years ago I did some research and it said that 65% of people with polyps will get relief from Singulair. After my last surgery (3years ago) I asked my doctor if I could go on singulair. I have had very very slight polyp growth, have not had any sinus infections, have not had to take prednisone since that last surgery (thank God).. All in all I am doing much better. My routine is singulair, nexium (hiatal hernia), Nasacort and benedryl each night. I do not do rinses. Did in past and didn’t feel they helped. Every once in awhile I smell something. Hi Cat

A Hiatal Hernia is a weakening of the muscle right where the

esophagus meets the stomach. It progressed until I had terrible heart burn

which ultimately created chest pain. At first they thought it was gall

stones, then the hernia was discovered with a scope procedure. That being

said if I lost 40 pounds I probably wouldn’t have the same level of

problem. The weight pushes the stomach up which makes the hernia worse.

So I do not believe it was related to the Samters.

However, I have read that a lot of problems do occur from the sinus drainage

that upsets the stomach. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I don’t really have sleep

issues that I know of. I have been sleeping well ever since the last

surgery. So nice to sleep through your nose all night. After about a year

of the singulair, I started to have some breakthrough allergy attacks

(sneezing). I take the “4”hour benedryl at bed so I sleep off

the effects. It does keep the allergic reactions at bay. I

think every few days it just builds up.

Benadryl

is of course a very sedating med and may give you somewhat of a 'hangover'

fuzzy feeling during the day as well as give you a propensity for weigh gain.

If you have sleep issues you might want to have a sleep study done to see if

you sleep architechture is normal and make sure you don't have sleep apnea

which can really contribute to weigh gain ( there are good metabolic reasons

for this) and fuzziness during the day. Some docs have access to a sleep screen

but a full fledged sleep study is the gold standard and a lot of people are shocked

to find out that they have a sever sleep disorder.Check it
