The speech isn't perfect with a few articuation problems but almost. He can say everything and will answer the phone. I always ask him to tell me the story about... to get any answers out of him. He hates for me to have a friend over and tells them to get out or he will monopolize the conversation. He loves movies but hates cartoons. He likes his father but I am the one. I don't think I can do much to make him mad. I never heard of Floyd Tilton, sorry. Charlyne Mom to Zeb 9 DS/OCD ?
Guest guest
Charlyne Yeah. . . cannot say 1 word!!! There is not 1 word that is understood except by the family. We practice questions and answers, and a million other things and most of the time he will look at you and try to repeat (parrot) your last syllable of your last word spoken to him or him will try to imitate a word that you tell him to say, or " ggggrrrrrrr " at you when you ask him something. when he gggrrrr's I never force the issue, I never want to force him to resort to aggression for you to " stop " what it is that is annoying him. I give him a 5-10 minute break and then I will approach him again and he is usually OK at that point. My 18 year old son won't even tell me how his day went or what he did when I ask - so. . .what's a mother to do????? Floyd Tilton was not a medical expert, but his website always has links, info, up-to-date information on everything and also his views (in a nice way) about different org. etc. that sometimes forget about the people TODAY with Autism and their future and concentrate more on the cause and cure of Autism. I agreed with a majority of his columns!! Never interacted on the message board - just went there to read his colums/articles Kathy Re: Floyd Tilton In a message dated 3/11/2002 12:59:35 AM Eastern Standard Time, outerspace@... writes: > Just wondering. . . Zeb may have speech but we have behavioral problems. has no speech but has no behavioral issues. We work with what these kids have and do the best we can. Charlyne Mom to Zeb 9 DS/OCD ? Guest guest
No I haven't heard of that website. I haven't heard of Floyd Tilton either. Well I do chat on a about.com website, but that's cool that we created it. rebecca --- UrthMan <outerspace@...> wrote: > Has anyone been to Floyd Tilton's site on the web??? > (About.com) He is the guide of Autism/PDD on that > website?? > > Anyway. . . Guest guest
Hi Charlene We did try devices earlier, and he is a wiz on the computer, video games, vcr's. .. .you name it. PECS works great for him. He is able to form sentences and understand and read sight words and get his message across. We have used PECS for about 6+ years now. We insist that he say the word while showing us or read the sentence he has formed. EX: I -- WANT -- CEREAL / I -- NEED -- HELP / I -- WANT -- TV -- LOUDER he puts all 3 words on his sentence strip and then brings the strip to us and reads the sentence while he points to each word. In the community, we are able to bring a book of icons (he hates to carry anything) and this has worked for us. <<<< We work with what these kids have and do the best we can>>>> AMEN. Guest guest
nathan has very little speech, but is improving mostly just a word or two when he wants something such as his nightly snack of pop, but only the family(mainly me) understands him often even his little brother or dad will ask me what does he want? And he does have a go talk, eventually working up to a dynamite through dynavox systems by the time he is in high school mainly for community stuff, nobody not even the librarian understands him when he answers with his name for them or says hamburger for food. He wont converse with us, mostly tries to ignore us, he gets SCL or REspite every day after school 3-5pm then he comes home and says 5clock, il eassee ich " excepcting a grilled cheese sandwich, but he is getting better about being a little more flexible on supper time and with the textures too, OT has been hleping alot here. shawna. ===== shawna __________________________________________________

You know I don't post a lot but I can so relate! I *listen* to you all *talk* every day all day long as I am home _with kids!_ Every day that I ask Ted what he had for lunch, he says gbuguber (hamburger!) Ted has a (newly aquired) Booktalker. That new (only $500) one that looks just like a leap pad. It is very cool and Ted could program it within weeks. I will miss you all when goes down over the weekend.
