Yes Dawn, it's the same here. Seth only goes to school for 3 hours a day

now. The class is actually 6 hours long. I think they only allowed that so

easily because he didn't legally have to go to school this year. Come

September though, that will be a hard one to convince the district of. I'm

not sure if Seth enjoys school or not either. He doesn't show any

frustration at staying home, or going. I am not so worried about OT and PT,

but ST is my main concern. I could always pay out of pocket for ST at the

college. Seth's Early Intervention team was great. They were all from the

same company and were very adaptable and accessible. We had team meetings

monthly and they worked together, with us, nicely. BUT.......we had to shape

our family life around all the therapies and meetings. Always a trade off,

ya know? LOL I just have to weigh all the pros and cons to it all and

settle on the option that suits the WHOLE family best.

Gail :-)

<< Gail, in our area, the child has to technically be inrolled in the class

to receive all therapies, so they can consider one hour a day several days a

week inrolled, or several hours one day a week. maybe your school would agree

to the same. If they are not inrolled they have to give speech to our kids.

Gail you have some great ideas!! Thanks and let us know what happens. s

awareness is not to a point where I know if he is comfortable at school or

not so it is hard to know what to do sometimes. we also go to a place that is

wonderful in our town that gives private therapy, insurance covers, and it is

great!! I would love to hear more about Seth, thanks Dawn >>

Hi Dawn,

You are very lucky your able to do things at school with . I observe

Seth, but can't get involved in what he's doing, although it would be no

problem for ME to stay there with him! LOL Seth turned 6 in January. He

actually didn't legally have to go to school this year, but I did want to

give it a chance. I'm not sure what I will do about therapy for next year.

We have a teaching college right here in town that I know does speech, but I

don't know about OT and PT. When Seth was in EI we had everyone come to the

house, including a special ed teacher twice a week. It was nice to be so

involved in his learning, but was very restrictive with trying to fit

everyone coming and going twice a day and teach the girls too. Ideally, I

would like to send him to the local public school for all his therapies,

music, gym and art. That way he would get some socialization with peers

and I would work on the other things at home. I doubt the district will

agree to this though. Our family has discussed how taking Seth out of school

will affect our home life and are still working on how we can retain some

independence and privacy while giving Seth all the things he needs. Although

we don't have the problems that Charlyne has had with abuse at school, we

don't feel that the school is adding much to his growth. I have tons of

ideas swarming in my head as to how to set up home schooling for him.

Like....changing the spare room into a therapy room , making work jobs, what

community activities I can use etc. So, I guess we are ready if the district

doesn't allow him to just attend school for therapy. Well, also helps that

my dh is retiring in August, so I will have lots of help! LOL Talk about

going on and on! LOL Sorry, I did get carried away. LOL Thanks Dawn, for

the support. God Bless you too.

Gail :-)

<< Hi Gail, we will have to swap ideas, also with Loriann and maybe others

about home school, I thought I remember you saying you were going to keep

Seth home. How old is Seth? My son is only 5 but I have decided even for next

year to do as I am doing this year, I go in with him an hour or so (he can

still receive therapies there) and during the times they have circle time, I

want him to listen and be with the other kids while I help him to sit and

also I bring his pictures to work with him. This is working for us!! I can

not believe the school is letting me do this, but maybe it is okay with them

because I can help them with the other kids and I really enjoy this!!! Sorry

to go on and on but I just wanted to let you know I will be thinking of you

as you venture into a similar situation!! God Bless, Dawn, s mom

Dawn,

I don't know as I would say overwhelming as much as it is challenging. LOL

Overwhelming sounds too much like the odds are against me. LOL Challenging,

well, I like a good challenge. LOL I don't commit to something until I'm

almost 100% sure it will work. If I'm not sure, I keep searching for an

answer to the problem that is as close to 100% as I can get. Wonder if I

have a failure phobia? LOL Not sure if that is the right attitude or not.

LOL Pros and cons to everything, ya know? LOL

LOL Dawn!!!! It's the dangling that gets me too. I always thought that

Seth was the only one that did that. LOL But now add the mouth noises,

seeking heat, light switch syndrome, VCR syndrome and all the others and it's

easy to say our kids are perfectly normal ds/plus kids! LOL Doing the

school thing A LITTLE is about all *I* can tolerate. LOL Seth could

probably take more, but not me. LOL What does dangle Dawn? Seth

used to spin EVERYTHING. Didn't have to be round. He could put a good spin

on his Dad's size 10 sneaker. LOL Now, he just dangles, usually from his

mouth. LOL Puts the lace in his teeth and shakes and dangles his shoes.

LOL I tried doing it and got nothing out of it except a tired jaw. LOL

Things like that still fascinate me after all this time. LOL Just can't

imagine what he gets out of it. LOL I don't think we can ever know ALL the

answers. Heck, I only get about 50% of the answers right with my other four

kids! LOL We do our best, huh?

Gail :-)

<< You are right Gail, the odds are with us cause we love our kidos and we

can do this!! It is nice that we can all encourage each other with whatever

we decide to do, we know our kids the best and this is why I too feel it is a

challenge to keep home and work with him plus have the school thing

alittle, this is about all I feel he can tolerate. Sometimes though I guess I

just feel like I wish I knew ALL the answers on how to help him!! Oh well, I

need to be more positive about this as well, ( is a hummer, teeth

grinder, and ya know guys, I never saw a dangler before and thought before

reading about Joan's Andy that my guy was the only dangler, now we should all

get together with the kids and know ours are not the only danglers by any

means!!) Dawn

Hey Gail, thanks for the encouraging words!! dangles belts, shoelaces ,

head bands, plastic hangers, sticks, and lots of other stuff, (has an elmo that

he obsesses over kinda like Irma's 's elephant!) he just watches and

swings these things and is very happy while he growls or hums, I agree Leah, I

am so fascinated by this, wow, cannot spin things, maybe he will some

day, but VCR's wow, Seth knowing how to work it, very impressive!! I remember

you saying, careful what you wish for, like cannot open doors yet?! Take

care Gail, Dawn (all our guys are something arent they?)
