Diane, yeah, I would think this would be another good argument for one on

one, eh? I am going to arm this IEP meeting with as many advocates,

caseworkers and people from MHMR as I can, and I will have ALL of them push

this for me.

Oh, and another thing! Last week, the teacher sent home a note saying

RAN OUT OF THE BUILDING, with no advance warning that he was going to do

this!! He was in the gym at PE, saw an opportunity and started running for

one of the exit doors! The assistant chased after him, yelling for to

stop, but he turned around, laughed at her, and continued running until she

caught up with him. As many of you already know, last year, as they were

getting ready for dismissal and were in line to go outside to the bus,

bolted from the line, ran out of the building and headed towards his bus!!

The IEP meeting last year still resulted in a " no one on one aide " decision

because he was never out of anyone's sight while he was running!!! Big

deal!!! What were they going to do....watch him get hit by a car while he

was running towards the bus???

Oh, boy, I can't WAIT for this year's meeting.....between this incident, and

KKI's findings, it should be good!!

,

Safety is the number one reason people get aides for their kids. You

need to rant and rave about this; let them know that you KNOW they can't keep

safe and you dont' want to wait for their mistake, which could kill

. Say it like that. And then fight like hell for it. Seems to me

IS indeed in real danger and an aide is an essential and critical piece

in his education.

Is there another way to run out of the building? Who in their right mind

would TELL anyone they're going to attempt an escape??

Get in front of a mirror and RECITE " A manifestation of my son's disability

is his inability to keep himself safe. He is a danger to himself " . Then

list all occasions that he has run away. Repeat each time the above mantra.

Say it calmly and in a stone cold voice. Be unemotional. When you finish

ask them what their defense will be against negligence for a known danger.

Eye sight is not hands width distance. Safety requires handswidth.

Try again for a parap, one to one, assistant, guard, what ever your district

wants to call it.

Know that I am cheering you on. this is a battle worth winning.
