Guest guest
We had a McClaren stroller for Trisha but she out grew it this past year, she was 85 lbs when we had to stop using it. Now when we go to the mall we get a wheelchair for her. Walmarts also has wheelchairs to use. She loves the wheelchair! However, they are outrageously expensive now. I was going to try and get one and have medical assitance cover it, but then someone gave me theirs. Practically brand new. It's compact and very light. You used to be able to buy them through a certain company, but they no longer carry it. The new company is basically highway robbery and they call it a convaid stroller....but here it is: http://www.convaid.com/ You know, Flaghouse used to carry the McClaren. You can contact them and see if they still have some. They are MUCH more reasonable than the convaids. Guest guest
you also might check with your Children's Hospital if you have one, We got ours from them, they have a grant fund and we applied for it, we got ours brand new, got to pick out the color and I also got a harness for ours. They based our qualification on Trisha's need as well as to help protect me from having to lift and tug on her when she got in one of her I'm laying down moods and not budging in the middle of the store or where ever. It was also based on income but they weren't that tough with it. No Joan. My HMO has never paid for any equipment. I was going to try and get it covered through medical assistance. Do you have something like that where you are? MA pays for Maddie's monthly pull ups too. I also get about $600 annually through FDSS, but that of course, doesn't cover a convaid. The McClaren works great for Maddie now, but someday I'll need a convaid I'm sure. Donna
Guest guest
Donna, thanks for answering about the stroller info. I knew I'd have to ask you for your info anyway, because the MacLaren company sold their stuff to someone else. So far as this stroller goes, although it says up to 120 (150?) #, I forget, PB is so tall (almost 5 " that he has nearly outgrown it. However, he loves to ride in it, and doesn't mind having his knees up high. The other advantage over a wheelchair is that this thing really is lightweight and portable. It has traveled on gravel and turns much more quickly than a wheelchair. My M-I-l has a portable wheelchair, but it is very heavy and takes up all the space in the back of our car. Another thing we have done is have PB push the MacLaren with his backpack in it, reach our destination, and then he has a portable chair (like at a parade). I have had him even push it all the way home again, about 2 blocks. It was safer to have him strap himself in and sit and enjoy the parade than having him hop up every 10 seconds from one of those folding chairs. It just depends on the situation. I know we hate to think about the worst, but if we ever had a house fire and had to leave, I'd get him strapped into the stroller as fast as I could. I think he can undo the buckles now, but he likes the security and if I had to have someone watch him that didn't know him in an emergency, he would be much safer. (We were in a car accident once when he was little. I had a sitter with us, and she could keep him safe, but if I had to do that today and I was out alone with him, the stroller would be a huge help.) I see it as insurance. Guest guest
Has anyone hit up their insurance company for help in purchasing one of these strollers? I'm looking at the " Scout " on the Convaid page for andy. It has better wheels for going " off road " than the stroller thing. ...it's coming out in April 2002. It's a medical necessity if I'm going to get him to the doctor when he's sick without calling an ambulance.... Can you tell he's sick? Got sick for his birthday. We're taking him to the doctor today, a day later than I would like, but *I* can't get him to the car when he's this sick anymore! I could if I had this thing because I would only haVe to get him down to the first floor and then into the chair to the car (we made a wheel chair accessible approach to our house wiht many stairs for my grandmother and Rex's mother). :::::::sigh::::::: I'm thinking he has strep. j
