Trish,

Out of curiosity why did you use Singulair?

Subject: Singulair question...

Well, I hope everyone had a better Christmas than us. 5 of the 6 of us were

sick and we ended up in the emergency room with my husband and Sami.

This was the first time that we tried singulair for Sami's episode, we gave

it at the onset of the episode for 5 days, but it didn't seem to make a

difference. She caught a bad cold virus on top of an episode.

Has anyone else tried this method, or do they use it each day? I thought I

would try this method first since our insurance company denied coverage for

the singulair. Just wondering if I should try again next time, or switch her

to every day.

Thanks,

Trish

My understanding from my son's doctors is that the Singulair is like a

maintenance drug...needs to be taken every day, regardless of fever

episodes...

> Hi

Ditto on the Singulair here. Must be taken every day (sorry)! My daughter even

had a relapse of fevers when we were without for five days. She has just had

another fever (over Christmas of course) but they don't go as high and are only

3 days. I think she got an episode instead of the chest cold the rest of the

family has!

I believe at the Periodic Fever Conference in Hershey, Dr. Holmes Morton

said that he had been having success treating his HIDS patients by only

using the singulair just before a fever episode.

and its been great. I thought that Singulair is for alergies?

I don't have the knowledge to respond to your question about any

similiarities between Singulair and Cimetidine, Azzie...but I remember we

had some discussion about Singulair several months back on this board, I

think maybe around August or September. There is an article you can find

and read on PubMed that was published by a research team in the Netherlands

(Frenkel et al) titled " Increased urinary leukotriene E(4) during febrile

attacks in the hyperimmunoglobulinaemia D and periodic fever syndrome " . I'm

not a medical professional, but what I get from that article is that

leukotrienes are elevated during episodes in HIDS patients. Frenkel et al.

postulated that an anti-leukotriene drug, like Singulair, could have a

positive effect during fevers. Some doctors are taking that a step further

and prescribing also for patients. My son has been diagnosed with

and is taking Singulair. Ironically, we discovered Singulair because

of some breathing problems/allergy issues he was having this past summer.

His pediatrician has continued to prescribe it because it seems to be

helping with our son's fevers. You may also have seen the recent posts and

the questionnaire from a pediatrician who is interested in hearing about

our stories relative to Singulair use. The more anecdotal and scientific

information that can be compiled about the success of Singulair in

decreasing the severity and frequency of periodic fever episodes, perhaps

the more doctors and insurance companies will be willing to look at this as

a viable therapy!
