I am not 100% certain yet whether or not my son has syndrome.

Basically, I was getting frustrated with physicians not listening to

me when I said that my four year old son was sick monthly, and not

with a minor cold or flu. I kept track since April, 2006 and every

month since, even sometimes twice in a month he was running a high

fever. For the past two months, his fevers were accompanied by a

head ache and his neck appeared stiff. Last month at the hospital,

they indicated that he had strep throat, but when I spoke with my

family physician recently he indicated that it didn't actually turn

out to be that. On Friday, I finally took him to a pediatrician and

he looked him over and took a throat swab, but was fairly certain

that it again would not turn up anything.

A few months ago, we noticed a small lump in his neck. Every time he

went to see a doctor they said he had a swollen lymph node. When I

went to the pedestrian I was able to provide him with six months of

fevers - including exact dates from start to finish. Unfortunately,

I had not kept very good records before this time. Everyone I had

taken him to in the past said it was a virus.

I know that the fevers come every month, but they are not always

consistent. Also, my son's most recent episode was 7 days and

everything that I have come across to date indicates 3 - 6 days of

fever. Today he is finally himself.

His recent symptoms included a high fever, redness of the throat (I

am not sure about sores, the pediatrician just indicated that it was

a " mess " in there), swollen lymph node, headache and his neck

appeared to be stiff (though, he did not complain of this). The

pediatrician indicated that there is no way to tell for certain and

that I just need to bring him in every time he starts to run a fever

and to give him prednisone at the onset. He thinks that from all the

symptoms, it is syndrome. My main worry is that as we are

waiting to confirm if he in fact does or doesn't have

syndrome, that we could go several months without diagnosing

something else.

I am very new to this and have so many questions and concerns.

Unfortunately I usually feel quite rushed by physicians and don't

get the answers that I need.

I know I have a lot of reading to do, I definitely struggle with all

the different titles. Cyclic nueopenia, FMF, etc. What is the

difference in all of these?

While I am waiting, each month, is there anything I should be doing

in the meantime? Should I be asking the pediatrician to check for

other causes? Or, just wait it out?
