I too have found that the emphasis needs get " off " the incident that may be causing the behavior. Last year Gene had an incident where he screamed for an hour straight at school at the top of his lungs and threw a beanbad chair across the room. He had thrown some home made french fries on thr floor and his aide told him to pick them up. He said " no " and she held firm. A person truly understanding of autism would have tried to figure out " why " he had thrown them. and didn't want to pick them up..not look at it as an act of belligerence. so it got worse. I knew that that situation could have been averted in two seconds by empathizing with him first, asking him why he threw them, offering a different snack of choice and THEN asking him to pick them up. He would have done it then. I see it over and over that alot of situations arise that are avoidable because people dealing with our children often don't know the key words, phases, approaches or don't know enough about aspects of autism. I could see Ken (my husband) doing that. These teachers are really not thinking are they. So, in ignoring it they just encourage him to raise the stakes. Have they not heard of the phrase " ignore the behavior, not the person " ? I can't believe he is doing nothing while he is sitting there that they couldn't reinforce. Heck, just sitting there is gold in our book. They really are clueless about behavior management. I'm feeling pretty awesome about things today. Yesterday we had a big upset. One of those fine one moment and wild the next events over putting on his socks and shoes. Last night he had difficulty taking his shower (I think he was having problems with his in home staff person and I got the brunt of it during the shower) anyway, I was determined that we weren't going to have another problem this a.m. and with some forthought and planning (and a Halloween mask to make life fun) we had a beautiful morning and off to school with no nasty stuff. Now we have had a great morning and something to build on. If you want someone to really train them in behavior management I could send . He is really great at punishing incorrect responses and reinforcing appropriate behavior in the people around him. LOL!!!! Karyn

Guest guest
Hi Charlyne, It sounds like the school staff doesn't know what they are doing, plus they are making things worse. I am really sorry this is happening. It seems like they are using time out inappropriately to me. I hope the behavior specialist can help get things under control. {{{{{{HUGS}}}}}} Marisa
Guest guest
Charlyne, --- I went to > Klebenoff today. Have you heard of him? I feel so much better. Wow, I think you've hired one of the best. He has an excellent reputation and from what I understand has two kids with disabilities. He has won a lot of awards for special ed advocacy and I think autism in particular. Does your son's school know you've hired him yet? They are going to be very surprised! I hope they quake in their boots! I am so sorry that you are going through this and I'm saying lots of prayers that things get better soon. Marjorie
Guest guest
Hey Charlyne, Don't worry these are the same questions I ask myself. These are also some of the issue I brought up in the protocol. It seems that this person just really likes being in the van. I don't blame him as he has no work or school at this moment. I think he would just rather be riding around. When writing the protocol which is a work in progress I made sure to add that the staff should reassure him constantly as to the daily schedule since we all know predictability is a large part of keeping people happy. He does not do a lot of walking due to a previous medical issue. He also does not like to get out of the van in the community. I am unsure a lot of the time if or if not staff are explaining the schedule to him. It is hard to know. I just hope they are. I have been working on these protocols for him for him for about 6 hours now. I think my brain is mushy (ha) Thanks for the input, Devrey > > Hi Devrey, > Your right about finding a balance. Guest guest
Hi Charlyne, I am so sorry you are having to go through this daily battle. I have been there too so I can really empathize. It is very hard to keep fighting, but you are doing an amazing job. {{{{{{HUGS}}}}}} Marisa
