Sara? Is he in any type of exercise program? Any sports or anything? Can

you have a friend come and *work out* with him? If the meds are working so

good, seems a shame to upset the apple cart. Hope you find a solution.

Sara,

I think I would find it very difficult to take Elie off Seroquel if he is

doing so well on it despite the weight gain. I know the weight issue can of

course be very difficult also. I don't know if you've said before, but do

you think he eats more than he should or is it just a metabolism problem,

exacerbated by the Seroquel? I think I would try to deal with the weight

issue by diet and exercise before taking him off the Seroquel.

When Brook was on Depakote he gained weight and wasn't really eating

very much at all. He has always been a terribly picky eater and we usually

had to distract him to get him to eat. Despite this he was still a little

chubby when he was on the Depakote. After he stopped taking the Depakote we

noticed a big weight drop.

Doctor?? Opinion on drugs for children with disabilities?? Surely you

jest???? The doctor didn't even know what Seroquel was until I showed him

the literature.

As to weight gain - since last year, he first lost 10 pounds gained when on

Risperidal, but has since gained 15. So his weight at 4'8 " is now 165 lbs.

Doc's opinion ?? What ever I want to try. He has no suggestion on other

meds. He actually said to try a break during Xmas but I won't do that as we

want to enjoy break time from school.

Still soliciting foods.

Hey Sara,

Why is it that he would suddenly start to gain weight after being on it

for so long? Are docs positive that it is the Seroquel? I think if it

were me, I'd gauge how much he's gaining. If it's small amounts, maybe you

can cut back somewhere else, or step up a little more exercise. If it's

really helping him with sleep, that's a tough call to make!! Did the

doc

give you any opinion on it??

I guess was lucky. He gained with Risperdal (14 pounds in 5 weeks), but

didn't with Seroquel. Do you think he's having a growth spurt? I've heard of

kids (knew a few) who got chunky right before they shot up. Of course they

weren't DS, though.
