Guest guest
Hi All, My husband is out of town working and really I have no one tell or share with this that would really care or understand. I hope everyone can appreciate this as much as I do. I filed a state complaint with the dept. of ed in Aug. I do all the advocate work at our small Arc that runs the summer camp, just to give you the background. I had an issue with ESY services this summer with Zeb but also with our school dept. not furnishing IEP's for the other children that attend camp from this town. We have children from 5 other towns that attend as well. Our town provides lots of funding for our social programs. The director of the camp did the best she could prior to camp starting to get the IEP's to make sure each camper had the appropriate services and supports. The requests were ignored and we did the best we could but the campers did not benefit as much as they should had we had the appropriate info. I knew I had to file this complaint and really did lots of soul searching. The ARC director( different person) was furious but mostly about possibly losing her funding although she didn't quite say it that way. It was a long 60 day wait!!! The state acknowledged the validity of the complaint today. They also are mandating a district wide change. A memo must be sent to every building administrator and pupil personnel staff detailing the requirements developing an IEP that includes ESY. The memo must be sent to the state for review before distribution, the town will enter into effective communication with ESY providers and PPT's will convene for each of our town children to review if they benifited or failed to benifet from the ESY. The town will be required to fullfill these mandates within 15 days and submit a corrective action plan with state for monitoring.I couldn't have hoped for more.I am constantly hearing one person can make a difference and I DID! Our efforts with these school districts do make a difference. I hope this will empower us all to keep fighting for what we think is right and I was ready to quit. I can barely get my way through all our district issues but one thing at a time. I do think that my complaints will be taken more seriously and the district will try to establish a more workable relationship. I never make idle threats and I clearly demonstrated that.
