Guest guest
The mail carrier accidentally delivered a copy of the " Pediatric News " to my house yesterday (there must be a pediatrician living one block over at the same address). It can be seen online at www.pediatricnews.com. I read the whole newsletter cover to cover last night, as though I had my opponent's play book. I was floored at what the pediatric community is talking about, and even more shocked at Big Pharma's ads throughout. One of my biggest surprises was an ad for Culturelle, which we take daily here. It was marketed as, " Protecting against antibiotic- induced diarrhea in children. " So they know antibiotics mess up your gut???? Here are some other headliners and select quotes, sure to catch your attention. It is worth reading the headers for all below: (1) Immunity via Hepatitis B Vaccine May Wane at 15 " Protection in those vaccinated as newborns may begin to subside at around 15 years. " (2) Menactra Urged for All Aged 11 to 18 " With increased supply, we have the opportunity to include all youth, not just those at highest risk. " (3) Universal Flu Vaccination Would Strain Delivery Schools should be the new location to receive the recommended flu vaccine in the 2008 flu season, ore else " more than 41.5 million extra visits to pediatric offices would be needed annually to meet the increased demand. " (4) Giving Adults the Children Conjugate Vaccine may backfire " Immunogenicity among elderly patients who were given the children's dost was nothing to get overly excited about. " (5) First Year of Use Bivalent HPV Vaccine Shows 90% Efficacy " The vaccine, Cervarix, has not yet been approved by the FDA. " (6) Video Training Tool Improves ADHD Symptoms " They observed significant decreases in inattention and significant improvement in the working memory and other functions. " (7) Head Banging Typically Goes Away " Head banging is present in 3-15% of children . . . .'Sometimes I have parents bring in smart, verbal 3 year olds that talk up a storm and engage with you, and they say, 'I'm worried about autism, " Dr. said. 'They don't have it in perpective. The symptom itself scares people.' " (8) ProQuad (MMR maker) Supply Unavailable for Rest of Year " Merck had prioritized the production of Varivax and Zostavaz over that of ProQuad. . then the bulk was suspended because of low yields. " (9) Cord Blood Infusion Treatment Promising in Type 1 Diabetes " Transfusion of stored autologous umbilical cord blood reduced disease severity in a small study of children with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes. " (10) Many Parents Undecided about Teen Vaccines " Parents' safety concerns about children's vaccines may negatively influcent their decision about vaccination, but physician recommendations can override that. " (11) Are warning on antidepressants backfiring? Suicide rates have increased significatly and " clearly, we are not in a strong position to draw unambiguous conclusions about the causes of these increases. " (12) Letter to editor on timing of Hep B vaccine from doctor " We have not started the fifth dose [as recommended] because it does not make sense to us. " (13) Low-Carbohydrate Diet Effective in Teens " We might have just identified a highly motivated group of kids. " (14) Behavioral therapy doesn't help in constipation " Intensive behavioral therapy with laxatives is no better than conventional therapy in the treatment of childhood constipation. " (15) Prenatal blood lead screening aids in risk ID " Universal prenatal screening of maternal blood lead levels significantly increases the identification rate of women with abnormal levels, allowing earlier ID of infants born at risk. " (16) Risperdal ad " First and only medication FDA approved for irritability associated with autistic disorder in children 5-16. " (17) Pediatricians said to lack savvy on food allergies " Pediatricians' knowledge about food allergy presentation and management 'is not quite up to speed.' " (18) First formula with probiotics " A new infant formula, Good Start Natural Cultures, is the first routine formula in the US with probiotics for the promition of immune health in infants. " (19) Coverage rates higher with combo vaccines " They pointed out that while there are clear advantages of combination vaccines, such as a reduction in pain and anxiety, there is not much evidence for other possible advantages of [combo] vaccines. " (20) Largest study to date supports Gardasil's safety in first year of use Athough 4 cases of death from HPV4 included " a 12 year old girl who died of myocarditis after developing ventricular tachycardia, a 19 year old girl who died from sudden cardiac death and pulmonary embolism (blood clots), a 14 year old who died from multiorgan system failure due to influenze B viral sepsis, and a 4th case for whom few data were available except her use of oral contraceptives, her death was associated with blood clots. Guest guest
I'm just stunned. You know that they're getting propaganda, but it's pretty shocking to actually read it anyway. I agree you should send your own recommended reading material. I guess you could send them the message that people in the community are onto them, know what they know, know more than they know. You could download, print and include counter-evidence to the false assertions being made in the newsletter. Don't send it in the same package as the newsletter though (though packaging them in an identical way is fine because it can't be proven that you actually read the mail that wasn't intended for you) and definitely anonymously. > > > > The mail carrier accidentally delivered a copy of the " Pediatric > > News " to my house yesterday (there must be a pediatrician living one > > block over at the same address). Guest guest
Really interesting. I have found if you ask your pedi about probiotics when your child has an infection and is prescribed antibiotics, they say “YES, give lots of probiotics” BUT they will not recommend it on their own without you asking. The new formula was interesting. I wonder what strain they are using. This one really caught my eye as DUH…… (14) Behavioral therapy doesn't help in constipation " Intensive behavioral therapy with laxatives is no better than conventional therapy in the treatment of childhood constipation. Guest guest
I remember getting vaccinated at school a couple of times. Early on in Kindergarten. I don’t remember which vaccines. But I also remember fluoride treatments in the nurse’s offices. I really don’t think they can do too much of this at school right now. Everytime I walk into school the nurse’s office is full now. Plus, I’ve seen the cupboard of medicines for kids. It is full as well. They can’t expect a 1 nurse outfit to do too much more. They also do the eye and hearing exams for every kid. But if they do, I’m right there with you screaming my head off. Our school nurse gets all of the info I send out at her request so hopefully I won’t have to. - From: EOHarm [mailto:EOHarm ] On Behalf Of Maurine Meleck Sent: Tuesday, August 07, 2007 10:43 AM EOHarm Subject: RE: We read EOH - What is your Pediatrician Reading? Guest guest
I would be shocked if that ever happened. It's too much of a liability for the school. My sister works in special ed and she isn't even allowed to inject an epi-pen. She has to put it in the kid's hand and force him/her to do it with a hand over hand movement. While she would actually be the one forcing the injection, techincally, the kid is doing it, so they are covered for liability purposes. > Really interesting. Guest guest
, I know that Dr. Megson told us that antibiotics use to be sold with a coating of Nystanin for that very same reason.
