Guest guest
Posted by: "Marie Ventura" mariev_chicago@... mariev_chicago Sat Jun 30, 2007 9:27 am (PST) <snip>We need alternative walks to take the money away and give to responsible charities who will spend it finding the answers for our kids. <snip> Hey guys, We have the perfect opportunity to raise money - a buck at a time- and give it to Autism Research Institute, who is NOW spending it to find answers for our kids! I turly believe we could raise a million dollars this way! And if enough is raised, Dr. Edelson will fund the vaccinated vs unvaccinated study! If you cannot join us for the cruise or the New Orleans events, you can still help in a very BIG way - by selling Puzzle Pieces! Order and distribute colorful Puzzle Pieces for a donation of $1/each. Information on all of these events will be provided soon in a video to be available on the new ARI website, www.autism.com. If you like, I can e-mail the video to you now. I’m hoping you will help us raise money for Autism Research in honor of the memory of Dr. Bernard Rimland - by selling Puzzle Pieces! Youth Groups and Teens can go to their neighbors, and distribute Pieces of the Puzzle for a $1 donation. Grandparents can involve their golfing friends and knitting circles and sell Pieces of the Puzzle for $1. Banks, Grocery Stores, Restaurants, Clubs, and Auto Dealerships can offer Pieces of the Puzzle for $1 donation. I can e-mail you a colorful poster to display to create interest where the puzzle pieces are available. Be sure to ask that the signed puzzle pieces be displayed. Autism is touching each of us now as 1 in 150 children are diagnosed autistic. We are parents, grandparents, friends and neighbors. Together in a grassroots effort, we can and will make a difference with recovery research, one piece of the puzzle at a time. With your help, this could turn into a nation-wide movement for a truly fitting tribute to Rimland and raise LOTS of money for research. Puzzle Pieces could be seen from California to New York, from Louisiana to Canada, and every city, town and village in-between! Instead of lamenting the lack of research, we parents can make a REAL impact - with the Puzzle Pieces, one buck at a time! Take the puzzle pieces to your office. Show them to your friends and neighbors. Let your kids go door to door. Think of places/businesses you frequent with a high level of people traffic. If they know you, and especially if they know your child, I’ll bet they would be willing to display the puzzle pieces and offer them for a $1 donation. 9 out of 10 people who are asked, will gladly donate a dollar. More and more people are hearing of Autism in the news now with the proceedings in Washington; it is a good time. And people are very willing to help. I have already placed the puzzle pieces several places and they are doing amazingly well! I placed them at the beauty shop where I get my hair done and the gas station/convenience store where I buy a soft drink daily. Next I plan to approach the barbershop where my son gets his haircuts. The president of one of our local banks attends our church and knows our son well. We approached him about putting the puzzle pieces in all his bank branches. He must get approval, but we are optimistic! There are just so many ways to use the puzzle pieces. I hope you will contact me and order some of these colorful Puzzle Pieces to distribute for a $1 donation. Just tell me how many packets of 50 you would like to receive. Be sure to include your mailing address. Wouldn't it be amazing if we raised a million dollars for research - one buck at a time?! All proceeds raised by these activities will be presented to the Autism Research Institute at the Bon Voyage Party for the “Cruise for a Cause”, the evening of September 2. Dr. Steve Edelson, PhD, Director of the Autism Research Institute, has endorsed these efforts and events. He will soon post information about “Cruise for a Cause” and a video (which includes the puzzle pieces) on the ARI website www.autism.com. Be sure to read some of the hundreds of tributes to Dr. Rimland posted there from around the world. You will have until August 25th to return the proceeds. Please also collect and return the signed puzzle pieces. We will decorate the walls for the presentation to the Autism Research Institute at the Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans on September 2, 2007. Anyone wishing to write a check can make it payable to ARI or Autism Research Institute. I can send you a letter from ARI providing their non-profit status and Tax ID. In his lifetime, Dr. Rimland did more for our children than any other human being. We owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude. Help us insure that his work continues through the Autism Research Institute. Contact me by e-mail and I will be happy to send a packet(s) of 50 puzzle pieces to you by mail right away. I look forward to hearing from you! And don’t hesitate to request more puzzle pieces! Guest guest
I just received this email. I sent a very detailed and not so nice reply back to them. Anyone else care to respond to them and help them to see the truth of Autism Speaks? Anyone else in the Central Valley of California care to show up and protest if they actually do this walk? I no longer live there but I will sick my friends on them. And my mother. I recommended that they walk for ARI instead. The Central Valley has a lot of money and some of the best organized parents who have fought for excellent services for our children. Ivar Lovaas has said if you have a child with autism, that is where you want to live. This just turned my stomach. Kathleen (who is just a little PO'd right now!) A project is underway in Modesto to plan an Autism walk through Autism Speaks. Attached is an informational flyer seeking planning committee members. is heading up the planning and as soon as she gets 15 committee members, Autism Speaks will come to Modesto and give information on how to put on such an event. If you are interested in helping plan the Autism walk, please contact at michellejuarez@... An Autism “Walk Now” fundraiser in Modesto?! Currently the closest walk for autism is in San Francisco. Let’s work with Autism Speaks to start a walk in Modesto! For now all you have to do is e-mail me your name to let me know you would be interested in attending an information meeting to be on the planning committee. After the meeting you can decide if you still want to be on the committee. It’s going to take a lot of us to make this happen, so please consider making a difference! Pass this information along to anyone you know whose life is affected by autism or anyone interested in helping their community. E-mail me if you’re interested: My e-mail address is michellejuarez@... Once I have enough names of interested people I will let Autism Speaks know and they will set up a date to come speak with us. I will e-mail you with that date, time and location. Guest guest
Kathleen, You've got the spirit!!! But, the goal should be to take the money away. It's all about the money, and we've got to get the money to the right, responsible organizations (like AutismUnited, ARI, NAA, FAIR, and many others) who will do the most good and actually help our kids. AS has shown us in bright lights that they are not that charity. By protesting at the walk, IT"S TOO LATE! They've already gotten their money. The on-line credit card payments and the checks made out to Cure Autism Now have already been transacted. All that would do would make a handful of parents feel bad about what they thought was a good deed, and it also might make them mad. Can you get with NAA or some other organization who will help put together an alternative walk? The person who is trying to organize the walk in Modesto is probably just trying to do something good for the autism community (all autism parents at least deserve the benefit of the doubt!). Show her what AS spends their money on - all the questionable expenditures that have been talked about on EOH recently, plus the worthless studies that will not help our kids. Is there a group or local group for your area that you can send out a message? If they are in the organizing stages, there is a good opportunity to beat them to the punch and organize another walk first! Guest guest
For the past going on three years, our local mercury toxicity researcher and ASU professor and parent of a child with autism, Dr. Jim has done walks which ended up being upstaged by (first) NAAR, then Walk-Now AZ which was led locally by the pro-AS agency and pro-genetics-cosponsor. Usually one walk has been in the spring and one in the fall so that they woudn't compete, but now the genetics(AS) group deliberately placed their walk within a month of Jims.Jim's money goes to ARI for research/treatments and of course we all know where the AS money goes. It is the AS' Walk Now that gets all of the splashy society-page news with Suzanne and the board chair of the local pro-genetics group in colored photos in all of the AZ magazines and the AZ Republic. Said local group is chaired by a PR firm owner (of all people). do we have any PR firm employees out there?RoxMarie Ventura <mariev_chicago@...> wrote: Kathleen, You've got the spirit!!! Guest guest
We need an autism connection to an ad agency that can start getting the message out: "Do you know where your money is going?" and show all the waste at AS. It wouldn't be too difficult! and then have the alternate, like ARI or NAA, with a list of all the good things they have done. Just a 'compare and contrast' of the high-rent digs of AS vs. the modest digs of some of the other autism charities would be an interesting poster. The more people know the more they will be outraged, and a picture is worth a thousand words!
