Yes Susie I have heard of Tramadol. I have never used it myself, but I

know it is a good pain reliever, but it is not an antinflammatory, but

should work well for you. Have you tried it yet? Is it helping you?

I would suspect it would be roughly equal in safety. Did your doctor feel

it was better than Celebrex? I'm not hearing that it is better in my

studies, but sometimes these docs have reasons for thinking that one is

better than another in a class.

Has anyone heard anything from their doctors about Bextra? Pfizer just announced it would do a corornary study, similar to what Merck did when they decided to pull Vioxx off the market.

I had a call from an old boyfriend....internist.....who asked me to immediately get off Bextra, as they hadn't entirely determined what about the vioxx was the cause of the cardiac problems. He says that when a drug company pulls a drug that is such a large % of their profit, there is probably more wrong than they're even admitting.

As for me, I went back to my Naproxin, with a known cardiac protection benefit.

Hi Carol,

Yes...I read about Bextra yesterday...I had just popped a 20mg Bextra

in my mouth when I saw the article on news! Good Grief!

If they take away our arthritis meds, we might have to resort to

surgeries to fix our pain.

scheduled for TAR in 30 days...

Hi everyone,

Is it just me, or do the -2 inhibitors not do that good a job? I know its hell on my stomach, but 2 or 3 Aleve (naproxen sodium) seems to work much better.

never know if you will be one helped by it or not.

I happily took Naproxin for weeks/months...don't remember know. Then

it started causing irritable bowl syndrom with me. As I took less,

to lessen the IBS symptoms, the pain got worse and worse. The Dr.

gave me something...don't remember what, but it did nothing at all.

Back to the Dr. asking for something stronger, after very little

sleep for 2 long weeks. She said there is nothing stronger I can

give you. I asked about Celebrex. She said it was not stronger,

just different... worked for some people not for others. She gave me

samples of Celebrex and Vioxx. I knew Vioxx was supposed to be a

little stronger, so I started with the Celebrex. Slept good for the

first in weeks, and loved it for several years. As my arthritis got

worse and worse, it no longer worked as well for me, but I still had

the feeling, I would have been in a lot more pain without it than I

was with it. I never had any stomach problems after years on it,

didn't have to take it with food, it gave me several years of relief

and am very greatful for it, and will probably go back on it for my

left hip when I need to. I just pray it is still an option for me.

No guarentees, but worth a try at least.

Re: Re: VIOXX vs Celebrex

Both Celebrex and Vioxx are 2 inhibitors - I think they will both be

taken off the market. (I am a registered nurse) I have tried both of

them and

felt " weird " when I took them - thank God I listened to my body and

stopped!

I have taken Bextra without any problems - maybe you would try the

Bextra!

I agree with you!! I started out on Vioxx, and felt kind of uncomfortable, and after 2 months my doctor switched me over to Celebrex. It really helped me and made my pain manageable. I have now been on Celebrex a few years and I take it with or without eating and I have not had any negative effects from it. Over the last 12 years, I have taken a long list of different meds, and the Celebrex worked better than anything else for me, short of hydrocodeine. susanoops <susanoops@...> wrote:

From a nursing point of view, when they said not to take Vioxx anymore that

put up a red flag to me on Celebrex and Bextra which are also cox-2 and all

work the same way. I decided to go with Naprasyn. I know that has been

around quite a while.

Kaiser Permanente Temporarily Bans Distribution, Coverage for COX-2 Medication Bextra01 Feb 2005

..California-based Kaiser Permanente, the nation's largest not-for-profit HMO, last week ordered its pharmacies to stop dispensing Pfizer's COX-2 inhibitor Bextra because of evidence that it might increase the risk of heart attack, the Los Angeles Times reports. Kaiser spokesperson Beverly Hayon said this is the first time the HMO has decided to ban the use of a prescription drug approved by FDA. Kaiser's new policy on Bextra cites "significant concerns about the safety of the drug." According to the policy, "Kaiser's pharmacies in California will cease filling prescriptions for Bextra, and prescribers will be contacted with suggested alternatives" (Vrana, Los Angeles Times, 1/30). Sharon Levine, Kaiser's associate executive director of the company's Northern California unit, said the company decided to stopping filling Bextra prescriptions because the medication showed no unique benefits that outweigh possible risks. She noted that older medicines like ibuprofen and diclofenac were just as effective in curing pain in clinical trials and that there is no evidence that Bextra is safer for the stomach. She added, "[F]or safety and quality reasons, we don't want to be involved in dispensing this drug." Campen, Kaiser's medical director of pharmacy services, said patients will still be able to receive and fill prescriptions for low doses of Celebrex, another COX-2 inhibitor manufactured by Pfizer. Campen said studies of Celebrex in low doses did not show the same risks as Bextra or Merck's COX-2 inhibitor Vioxx, which was voluntarily withdrawn from the market in September 2004. However, "clearly at the higher dose levels, there does seem to be a problem" with Celebrex, he said. Levine said the ban is not likely to affect the insurer's nine million patients because its doctors already have been avoiding prescribing the medication (, New York Times, 1/29). Implications New prescriptions for Bextra will not be filled after Tuesday, and patients will not be able to get refills as of March 1. Kaiser will refrain from dispensing Bextra for at least six months or until FDA or Pfizer can prove its safety, the San Francisco Chronicle reports (Fulbright, San Francisco Chronicle, 1/30). According to the Los Angeles Times, "A ban by Kaiser ... could prompt other doctors and HMOs to avoid the drug." Pfizer officials were not available for comment (Los Angeles Times, 1/30). It is believed that Bextra is more diangerous then Vioxx. Lots of blood

clotting and stroke, just a matter of time and it will be pulled, or

maybe not, seeing as how the FDA does not much have the safety of the

public in mind, but more how much money they are making.
