Guest guest
Families can get project lifesaver bracelets for about $300. That may be too much for families, which is why we take applications to provide them free of charge. (When we have funds.) The project lifesaver bracelet, in the event that the child wanders off, will emit a tracking signal that can be found by land or air. Most recoveries are less than 45 minutes. Most states have them, I believe. It's better than a GPS because GPS tracking signals can have interference. http://projectlifesaver.org/public_html/aboutus.htm > > I know Amber Alerts are for children who have been kidnapped- but there > needs to be a system in cases like this. > The poor family- they must be going crazy. > > > > > ------ Forwarded Message > > From: <NANCALE@...> > > Date: Sun, 17 Jun 2007 11:05:09 EDT > > <undisclosed-recipients:;> > > Subject: Young ASD child missing in Wisconsin > > > > > If you received this email by error, click REPLY, add REMOVE and you will no > > longer receive Unlocking Autism posts. > > > > This info from A UA Rep in Wisconsin who is helping in the search. Guest guest
The cost of the initial bracelet to the family is $300.00. Each month, the battery has to be replaced at a cost of $ 8.00. The cost of transceivers to law enforcement (usually sheriff's departments) is $ 2,000.00 per unit plus the cost of training of officers. These transceivers are placed in patrol cars that can be dispatched to the area. I do not know the cost of the transciever that can be placed in the home. However, do the analog signal, the transciever does have to be within a certain distance to pick up the transmitter that is located in the bracelet. Guest guest
While at the Autism One Conference I got a message on my cell phone from the Hampden Police (Or old home town) it was an automated phone message that an autistic boy was missing and gave the pertinent information and the number to call if you had seen him. It is sort f a mass calling program but I think I will look into this for Rangeley (Small town in Maine). Not sure what the phone prgram is called but I will post it when Ifind it. Guest guest
From what I understand, though, in working with the folks here with project lifesaver -- the police dept. doesn't HAVE to have the equipment, as long as there is a project lifesaver representative and volunteers nearby. (Maybe I'm wrong?) As long as there is a team nearby with equipment to pick up the signal, the child can be tracked. Not every police dept. here has the equipment, but since we have a PL rep and volunteers, then can assemble a team relatively quickly. I could be wrong but that was my understanding. -- In EOHarm , Wayne Rohde <waynerohde@...> wrote: > > > The cost of the initial bracelet to the family is $300.00. Guest guest
It's the Amber Alert. They automatically make mass recorded phonecalls to everyone in the community. We've had that here a few times. > > > > I know Amber Alerts are for children who have been kidnapped- but there > > needs to be a system in cases like this. > > The poor family- they must be going crazy. > > > > > > > > > ------ Forwarded Message > > > From: <NANCALE@> > > > Date: Sun, 17 Jun 2007 11:05:09 EDT > > > <undisclosed-recipients:;> > > > Subject: Young ASD child missing in Wisconsin > > > > > > > > If you received this email by error, click REPLY, add REMOVE and > you will no > > > longer receive Unlocking Autism posts. > > > > > > This info from A UA Rep in Wisconsin who is helping in the search. > Please pray > > > for this child's safety and that he be found soon. > > > > > > We have been alerted that there is a young boy with autism who is > missing in > > > Wisconsin since Friday.Benjy Heil was last seen by a neighbor on > the road, the > > > neighbor told him to get off the road or he'll get hit.... then > Benjy ran > > > through the woods. > > > > > > A bloodhound got his scent from the road, tracked it the VERY NICE > campground > > > across the road from his home, it's there that the scent is > completely lost. > > > I asked the police WHY they didn't send out an Amber Alert. Guest guest
We have 2 sheriff’s from Suffolk County speaking about project lifesaver at the Long Island Autism Conference. But, why can’t a parent use the Amber Alert system? How do they know FOR SURE this child wasn’t taken by someone- just because he has autism? I remember Carolyn G. talking at a conference about reverse 911- where they call you if someone is missing. Guest guest
Wasn't Amber alert supposed to be for when they know a child was abducted, know the abductor or have a good description of the abductor/fleeing car/etc? I think i remember reading some hub-bub about using it otherwise --it would flood the system, dilute its effectiveness... I dont know what ever came of the debate. All the ones I have ever seen are very detailed about the person or car invovled. Guest guest
I'm not quite sure what you're asking here. Any child who is missing can go out as an amber alert. The difference is that its more of a " public watchdog " kind of deal where you rely on well meaning citizens to report if they've seen the child. With the project lifesaver bracelet, they have a " homing " device attached to their ankle or wrist. > >> > > >> > I know Amber Alerts are for children who have been kidnapped- but there > >> > needs to be a system in cases like this. > >> > The poor family- they must be going crazy. > >> > > >> > > >> > > >>> > > ------ Forwarded Message > >>> > > From: <NANCALE@> > >>> > > Date: Sun, 17 Jun 2007 11:05:09 EDT > >>> > > <undisclosed-recipients:;> > >>> > > Subject: Young ASD child missing in Wisconsin > >>> > > > >> > > >>> > > If you received this email by error, click REPLY, add REMOVE and > > you will no > >>> > > longer receive Unlocking Autism posts. > >>> > > > >>> > > This info from A UA Rep in Wisconsin who is helping in the search. > > Please pray > >>> > > for this child's safety and that he be found soon. > >>> > > > >>> > > We have been alerted that there is a young boy with autism who is > > missing in > >>> > > Wisconsin since Friday.Benjy Heil was last seen by a neighbor on > > the road, the > >>> > > neighbor told him to get off the road or he'll get hit.... then > > Benjy ran > >>> > > through the woods. > >>> > > > >>> > > A bloodhound got his scent from the road, tracked it the VERY NICE > > campground > >>> > > across the road from his home, it's there that the scent is > > completely lost. > >>> > > I asked the police WHY they didn't send out an Amber Alert. Guest guest
The Amber Alert system can be used for any missing child, whether they were abducted or just missing. The police call the shots as to whether to issue the alert or not. I know here we had a child with autism disappear and they issued the amber alert immediately. He lost his way in the woods while walking with his dog and was found relatively quickly. It depends on the police department I guess. If you have a runner, I would first of all suggest a project lifesaver bracelet if you can afford it. I would also suggest speaking to your local police. Guest guest
The lifesaver bracelet is good for runners and those who may wander too far. It gives the caregiver a sense of comfort knowing they are wearing one. The intent is not so much for those abducted as the bracelet is large and highly visible. I would also suggest speaking to your local police.> >> >> >> > I know Amber Alerts are for children who have been kidnapped-but there> >> > needs to be a system in cases like this.> >> > The poor family- they must be going crazy.> >> > > >> > > >> > > >>> > > ------ Forwarded Message> >>> > > From: <NANCALE@>> >>> > > Date: Sun, 17 Jun 2007 11:05:09 EDT> >>> > > <undisclosed-recipients:;>> >>> > > Subject: Young ASD child missing in Wisconsin> >>> > > > >> > > >>> > > If you received this email by error, click REPLY, add REMOVE and> > you will no> >>> > > longer receive Unlocking Autism posts.> >>> > > > >>> > > This info from A UA Rep in Wisconsin who is helping in thesearch.> > Please pray> >>> > > for this child's safety and that he be found soon.> >>> > > > >>> > > We have been alerted that there is a young boy with autismwho is> > missing in> >>> > > Wisconsin since Friday.Benjy Heil was last seen by a neighbor on> > the road, the> >>> > > neighbor told him to get off the road or he'll get hit.... then> > Benjy ran> >>> > > through the woods.> >>> > > > >>> > > A bloodhound got his scent from the road, tracked it theVERY NICE> > campground> >>> > > across the road from his home, it's there that the scent is> > completely lost. > >>> > > I asked the police WHY they didn't send out an Amber Alert. They> > said he> >>> > > didn't meet criteria.> >>> > > > >>> > > The family has 7 other children that are hurtingterribly... one is> >>> > > challenged also.> >>> > > > >>> > > ALSO, I've spoken with our local search and rescue and once this> > boy is found> >>> > > -- they want to have it mandatory that EVERY SINGLE firefighter,> > EMT, police,> >>> > > etc. go through a class on what autism is and> >>> > > how to search for this type of wanderer.> >>> > > > >>> > > NOTE: THIS IS SOMETHING WE ALL NEED TO WORK ON IN OUR LOCAL> > AREAS! Guest guest
Sadly, most ASD kids cannot tolerate to wear something like that for sensory reasons. I think my son would have rather chewed through his arm than wear one. I am still waiting for the implanted chip since the only times he ever took a runner, he was naked. From: EOHarm [mailto:EOHarm ] On Behalf Of Maurine Meleck Sent: Sunday, June 17, 2007 9:00 PM EOHarm Subject: Re: Re: FW: Young ASD child missing in Wisconsin The lifesaver bracelet is good for runners and those who may wander too far. It gives the caregiver a sense of comfort knowing they are wearing one. The intent is not so much for those abducted as the bracelet is large and highly visible. The police call the shots as to whether to issue the alert or not. I know here we had a child with autism disappear and they issued the amber alert immediately.
