Hi :

Actually, we never used prednisone. I had reservations about using steroids and

was afraid of how it sometimes makes kids' fevers come closer together. Also,

we were always able to control Danny's fevers with a tylenol/advil rotation.

As for the mouth sores, we were so blessed and never had to deal with them.

Thank you, God! I'm including two " recipes " for the treatment of mouth sores

from other parents on the site (below). Also, I recently found something called

Peroxydyl (sp?) that my neighbor turned me onto when I had some weird virus over

Christmas break and MY mouth and throat were full of canker sores. It was

awesome! It's purchased over the counter at Walgreens, etc.

Here are the recipes:

" We use a combination of Peridex (oral antibiotic) (green in color) and

Decadron ( anti-inflammatory) (red in color) to treat these mouth ulcers. We

only dip a cotton q-tip in the peridex first, then apply over the sore and

then the decadron (again using only a q-tip). I find that if I treat them

immediately when I first feel them that they go away immediately, if I wait

a day then they still last a couple of days, but they never get any bigger or

get to the painful stage. "

and another recipe from Fran called " Magic Mouthwash " :

" 1.. Liquid Combination

2.. Swish and spit 5 ml no more often than every 4 hours

3.. Components

1.. Viscous Lidocaine (1 part)

2.. Maalox (1 part)

3.. Benadryl (1 part)

OR

1.. Solid Combination

2.. Apply small amount to lesion

3.. Components

1.. Benadryl 30 mg

2.. Mylanta 60 ml

3.. Carafate 4 gram "

As for the tonsillectomy, Danny got it when he was in 2nd grade in 2002. He

didn't start getting fevers until after a bought of strep in kindergarten.

We're so thankful the tonsillectomy worked, but I think you may be wise in

waiting a while to do it. I could be wrong, but my recollection is that some of

the folks on the site who had the surgery when their kids were little didn't get

as good of results as folks whose kids were a little older. ( If I'm way off

base here, folks, PLEASE correct me.}

Hope this helps. Call anytime.
